To block Claude Code from using Bash commands that begin with git push --force, add a Bash deny rule to your project’s .claude/settings.json. The rule uses Claude Code’s documented command-prefix pattern syntax; it does not establish a complete guard against every way of invoking a force push.
How do I block git push --force in Claude Code?
Add this rule under permissions.deny in the project’s .claude/settings.json file:

}The Bash(...) form identifies the tool, while :* applies the rule as a prefix pattern so it matches the command prefix and following command text. The exact force-push pattern shown here is an application of Anthropic’s documented syntax, not a literal example from its documentation. See Claude Code permissions and IAM.

What this rule does—and does not—block
Describe the rule narrowly: it targets matching Bash commands that begin with git push --force. The documented pattern syntax supports a command-prefix match, but the available documentation does not establish that this particular rule catches alternate forms such as git push -f, shell aliases, reordered arguments, a command prefixed with git -C, or equivalent invocations through another tool. If those variants matter, verify matcher behavior with your installed Claude Code version and use additional controls appropriate to your environment.
This is a Claude Code permission control, not proof of a repository-wide Git policy. Anthropic describes Bash approval prompts and configurable permissions in its Claude Code security guidance, but that guidance does not establish that a deny rule blocks every route to Git execution.

Anthropic documents both settings files and the invocation-time CLI option. The cited documentation does not fully specify how every user, project, managed, and CLI setting combines, so do not infer a broader inheritance or precedence model from this comparison. Why add a force-push guardrail?
Anthropic’s Prompting best practices lists “git push –force” among “Hard to reverse operations.” A deny rule can keep Claude Code from issuing the matching command unless you deliberately change the project configuration, reducing the chance of an unintended use of that command.
