BlackBerry announced PE Tree on August 3, 2020, as a free, open-source tool for inspecting Windows Portable Executable (PE) files. It displays PE structures in a tree and documents workflows for examining files, analyzing PE images found in memory, and dumping reconstructed files with rebuilt imports. You can run it standalone or use documented integrations with analysis tools such as IDA Pro and Ghidra.
What BlackBerry released
BlackBerry Limited announced PE Tree during Black Hat USA 2020 on August 3, 2020. The company said its Research and Intelligence team had originally developed the Python tool for internal use, then released it for the malware reverse-engineering community. The announcement described it as free and open source, developed with pefile and PyQt5, and available for Windows, Linux, and Mac at that time. Those platform statements describe the 2020 announcement; they do not establish compatibility with current operating-system or application versions. The project’s GitHub repository is the technical reference for its documented features and setup. Its present documentation does not, by itself, establish a maintenance cadence or a compatibility matrix for every integration.
What PE Tree helps a reverser inspect
A PE file is the Windows executable format used by files such as EXEs and DLLs. PE Tree presents a file’s structure in a navigable tree, making components easier to browse than in a raw byte view. The repository describes inspection of headers, sections, imports and exports, debug information, resources, certificates, overlays, and other PE structures. Its “Rainbow PE map” is documented as a visual overview of structures, file size, and location that can help compare samples at a glance. These are project-documented capabilities, not independently evaluated results.

The intended work is not limited to static files. BlackBerry’s announcement highlighted dumping and reconstructing malware from memory. The repository documents viewing PE images found in memory, dumping reconstructed files, and rebuilding import information—useful when an analyst is trying to recover a usable PE from an image whose layout or imports have been altered.

What “open source” means here
BlackBerry presented PE Tree as free, open-source software, and its GitHub repository identifies the project as Apache-licensed. For reuse, modification, or deployment, read the repository’s license file and account for third-party dependencies and the requirements of any integration you choose. “Open source” does not mean that external applications such as IDA Pro are included; IDA Pro is optional commercial software, not part of PE Tree.

In the announcement, BlackBerry Vice President of Research Operations Eric Milam said there were “more than 1 billion pieces of malware” and that the number was growing “by upwards of 100 million pieces each year.” That was an estimate attributed to Milam in 2020, not a current or independently verified count. PE Tree is documented as a PE inspection and reconstruction aid for malware analysis workflows. The announcement and repository do not establish that it replaces a full disassembler, improves detection, or is compatible with every current version of the tools it integrates with.
