Overload is a team objective mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7: take the single Overload Device from the middle of the map and carry it into either of two zones on the enemy’s side. Entering a zone scores one point. Teams switch sides at four points or when the half timer expires, and the first team to reach eight points wins. If the final timer expires with the score tied, a two-minute Sudden Death period begins with no respawns; the first team to score takes the match.
The official mode guide classifies Overload as Core Multiplayer and describes teams of up to six players. Current playlist access is not confirmed by Activision’s Season 06 announcement, so check the in-game playlist menu before planning to play it.
How the Overload objective works
Each team is assigned one half of the map. The Overload Device appears at the center, then may appear at one of three locations across the middle. Only one player can carry it at a time. Your team must pick it up and take it across the map into either of the two detonation zones on the opposing half.

Entering a zone with the device scores one point. If the carrier is eliminated, the device drops where it was last held so either team can contest it. After a score—or if the device is lost out of bounds—it resets to a central spawn.

Scoring, sides and Sudden Death
- One point: carry the device into either enemy detonation zone.
- Side switch: teams switch halves when one reaches four points, or when the half timer runs out.
- Match win: the match ends when a team reaches eight points.
- Tie at the final timer: a two-minute Sudden Death begins with no respawns. The first team to score wins.
Because the device can reset after a score or out-of-bounds loss, watch where it will return and be ready to contest the next pickup rather than assuming it remains at the scoring location.
How to help your team win
The official guide recommends organizing around the device rather than treating Overload as a kill-focused mode. The carrier is exposed, so escorting and protecting that player directly supports the objective. When the other team has the device, anticipate its likely route and reach a choke point before the carrier gets there.

Choose a role around the device
- Defend your half: hold routes into your zones and watch for an enemy carrier crossing the middle.
- Attack the enemy half: help retrieve or escort the device, and clear a route to either scoring zone.
- Move between both: support the carrier when your team has possession, then shift to interception or mid-map control when possession changes.
Roles can change as the device changes hands. If a teammate is carrying it, staying nearby to protect them is more useful to the objective than chasing opponents far from the device.
Use routes and choke points deliberately
Look for alternate ways across the map as well as the obvious central lanes. A predictable route gives defenders time to set up; a route with cover or a less-expected approach can help an escort reach a zone. On defense, read the enemy carrier’s path and take position at a choke point before they arrive.

Control of the middle matters both when the device first appears and when it resets. The official guide recommends securing the reset location before the device becomes available again and leaving equipment—such as a Trophy System or Assault Pack—where it can support your team’s position at a choke point.
Use a loadout that serves your role
The official guide offers role-specific loadout suggestions, including Combat Hologram, Active Camo, Trophy System and Assault Pack. Treat these as examples to consider for your approach, not requirements. In an Xbox Wire interview, Treyarch Design Director Matt Scronce said a player could remain in Active Camo while holding the objective at the time of that interview. The interview does not establish that this interaction remains unchanged in every later game update.

What kind of mode is Overload?
Activision’s guide presents Overload as a Core Multiplayer mode for teams of up to six. In an Xbox Wire interview published October 14, 2025, Treyarch Design Director Matt Scronce described its goal as creating a new competitive mode, and said the concept drew on earlier modes including Capture the Flag, Uplink, Search and Destroy, and Sabotage. The interview also described a design that could scale from 6v6 to 4v4 for the Call of Duty League; that design context is not a promise about current playlist formats.
Where to find Overload
You need access to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and its Multiplayer component. Activision’s game page lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Battle.net and Steam, and references Game Pass subscriptions. Check the relevant store for your region, platform and subscription requirements.

The official Overload guide labels the mode Core Multiplayer, but the Season 06 announcement published September 8, 2026 does not confirm that it is currently selectable in the standard playlist. Open the in-game playlist menu to check availability rather than assuming the mode is active.
