Black Hat is not one all-day class: its program separates structured Trainings, research-focused Briefings, and Arsenal demonstrations, each suited to a different goal.
1. Choose the kind of experience you want
Black Hat’s own program overview distinguishes three main experiences. Picking the right one prevents a common beginner mistake: treating every session as if it were a hands-on course.
| Format | What it is designed for | Best fit if you want to |
|---|---|---|
| Trainings | Structured technical instruction, including hands-on courses | Build or practice a specific cybersecurity skill |
| Briefings | Presentations centered on security research and findings | Understand current research, vulnerabilities, and techniques |
| Arsenal | Demonstrations of security tools and projects | See tools in action and ask their creators focused questions |
For a first visit, choose sessions around your curiosity and current skill level rather than trying to attend everything. A research briefing can be valuable even when you cannot reproduce the work, while an Arsenal demonstration may be more useful than a lecture if you learn by seeing a tool operate.
2. Check the current pass and attendee details early
Pass access, badge collection, and venue procedures can change by edition and location. Black Hat’s USA 2026 attendee resources, for example, provide pass-access information and badge-collection details; do not assume those instructions apply to another Black Hat event or a later year.

#1 Best Overall
- Open the official attendee-resources page for the edition you plan to attend.
- Confirm which pass includes the sessions or training you want.
- Read the badge pickup instructions, including identification and collection timing.
- Recheck the page shortly before travel for changes to access, venues, or procedures.
The same attendee information may also describe optional services such as assisted listening in selected areas. That is an accessibility option, not a requirement that every attendee purchase or bring special equipment.
3. Build a manageable schedule with the event app
Black Hat describes its event app as supporting schedule-building, networking, venue navigation, and sponsor browsing. Use those documented functions to reduce friction, but treat the app as a planning aid rather than a guarantee that every room, meeting, or demonstration will be available exactly as expected.

Plan around priorities
- Mark one or two must-see sessions for each time block.
- Add backup choices in case a room is full or a topic proves too advanced.
- Leave time to move between rooms, eat, and recover from a dense day.
Use the app beyond the calendar
- Review speaker and session information before committing to a block.
- Use venue navigation when rooms or demonstration areas are unfamiliar.
- Browse sponsor profiles only after your learning priorities are covered.
- Use networking features selectively; a short, relevant conversation is more useful than collecting contacts indiscriminately.
4. Read training prerequisites before booking
Black Hat Trainings cover technical cybersecurity subjects and may be offered in person, online, or self-paced. Course availability, delivery mode, access requirements, and prerequisites vary, so read the individual course page before paying or planning travel.
What to compare
- Goal: awareness, understanding research, or practical skill-building.
- Format and duration: structured instruction versus a shorter presentation or demonstration, and the stated delivery schedule.
- Prerequisites: networking, operating-system, programming, cloud, or other background named by the instructor.
- Access requirements: the pass or enrollment level needed for that course and edition.
A “beginner” label does not necessarily mean zero prior knowledge. A historical 2025 DEF CON beginner course listing still expected familiarity with basic networking, security, and programming concepts. Its requirement for a laptop capable of running virtual machines applied to that particular course; it should not be generalized to ordinary Black Hat attendees or to current courses.

Choose the right starting point
If you are new to security, begin with a briefing or Arsenal demonstration that matches your interests, then select training whose prerequisites you can meet. If a course page lists missing fundamentals, learn those first or choose an introductory session rather than assuming the instructor will cover them from scratch.
