Yes. Bitwarden offers native desktop apps for Linux, macOS, and Windows, so Ubuntu users can use the Linux client. Bitwarden’s download documentation names Linux generally rather than separately certifying Ubuntu; Linux installation details and system-authentication setup can vary by package and host configuration.
Which devices can you use Bitwarden on?
Bitwarden’s downloads page lists native desktop applications for Linux, macOS, and Windows, along with browser extensions, a web app, mobile apps, and a command-line interface (CLI). That gives you options beyond the desktop app when you need to access your vault on different devices.
The Windows download page lists Windows 11 support for x86, x64, and arm64, and offers standard, portable, Microsoft Store, and Chocolatey installation routes. Some Windows options do not update automatically, so keep the app current. Those Windows details should not be assumed to apply to Linux or macOS.
What is different about installing Bitwarden on Linux or Ubuntu?
Bitwarden’s desktop guide identifies AppImage, Deb, RPM, and Snap packages. Ubuntu is part of the Linux audience, but the reviewed download documentation does not make a separate Ubuntu certification claim. Choose a package suited to your distribution, and treat system-authentication behavior as dependent on the package and the services configured on your machine.

System authentication for AppImage, Deb, and RPM
For system authentication with AppImage, Deb, or RPM, Bitwarden’s desktop-app guide says system authentication must be enabled and supported. The host also needs a polkit agent and a secret service; GNOME Keyring is one example. If one of these components is missing or unavailable, system authentication may not work as expected.
Connect the Snap service
Snap installations may need an additional connection for the password-manager service. In a terminal, run:

What desktop features vary by computer?
On supported machines, the desktop app documents Windows Hello on Windows and Touch ID on Mac. Security preferences are configured separately for each account. The app can keep up to five accounts logged in at once. These are conditional platform features, not a guarantee that every feature works identically across operating systems.

Can you use Bitwarden in a browser or from the command line?
Yes. The download page also lists browser extensions and a web app, while Bitwarden documents a cross-platform CLI for Windows, macOS, and Linux distributions. The CLI is a separate interface for command-line access and automation, not the desktop application.
Bitwarden lists native CLI executables for Windows x64, macOS x64, and Linux x64. ARM64 users are directed to install through npm. Check the CLI installation guide for the available method for your system.

How do you move passwords into Bitwarden?
Bitwarden’s import guide documents common sources including LastPass, 1Password, Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Chromium, Password Safe, and another Bitwarden vault. Data from another password manager may also be importable if that app can export to a supported format; some files may need editing before import.
- Export your data from the current password manager in a format Bitwarden supports.
- Import the export file into Bitwarden using the import options in the web app.
- Check the imported entries, since Bitwarden does not detect duplicates. Repeating an import can create duplicate items.
- Delete the exported data file after the migration. It contains sensitive information that could be exposed if the computer is compromised.
Bitwarden says imported data is encrypted locally before it is sent to the server. That does not remove the need to protect and delete the export file, which remains a separate copy of your passwords until removed.

Do you need a paid plan or self-hosting?
The plan page describes free individual accounts as including unlimited storage for logins, notes, cards, and identities, access on any device, and a secure password generator. It lists advanced two-factor authentication options, Bitwarden Authenticator (TOTP), encrypted file attachments, and emergency access as Premium features. The page labels its plan information as current as of June 4, 2024; check the current plans page for today’s prices and entitlements rather than relying on that dated feature listing.
Self-hosting is optional and is not required to use Bitwarden’s desktop apps. Bitwarden describes its hosted service as managed, multi-tenant SaaS, while self-hosting is an administrator-oriented route for people whose preferences, compliance obligations, or security policies call for operating the service themselves.
Bitwarden documents Linux deployments using a Bash setup script, manual container configuration, or offline procedures, with skills ranging from intermediate to advanced. It also documents a Windows Server deployment using Docker Desktop and PowerShell. See the self-hosting guide before choosing that route; it involves server administration beyond installing a desktop client.
