If your BitLocker recovery key is missing, first write down the first eight digits of the recovery key ID shown on the screen. Then check the Microsoft account used to set up the device, any work or school account linked to it, and offline copies such as a printout or USB drive. Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key. If you cannot find it and cannot undo the change that triggered recovery, resetting Windows may be your remaining option—and it removes your files.

Start with the recovery key ID

BitLocker’s recovery key is a 48-digit number that can unlock an encrypted drive when Windows cannot unlock it automatically, according to Microsoft Support’s “Back up your BitLocker recovery key.” The recovery screen also displays a recovery key ID. Record its first eight digits: that portion helps you identify which saved key belongs to this device if you find several.

Check each place the key may have been saved

Where to check Who may control the copy What to do
Microsoft account The device owner, or the person who configured the device or enabled BitLocker On another device, sign in to the relevant Microsoft account and check its recovery keys. If another person set up the PC, ask them to check their account. Microsoft says the recovery screen on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later may show a hint of the associated account.
Work or school account An organization that manages or previously managed the device If the PC was ever signed in with a work or school account, check the organization account if available or contact its IT support. The organization may hold the key.
Printed copy Anyone who kept the printout Look through paperwork or records where the recovery key may have been stored, then compare the key ID to the one on the recovery screen.
USB drive Anyone with access to the drive where a backup was saved Check likely USB drives. If the key was saved as a text file, open it on another device and compare its ID with the recovery screen.

Microsoft’s “Find your BitLocker recovery key” lists these account and offline locations. A key saved in one Microsoft account will not necessarily be in another, so consider who first configured the PC and whether it has belonged to an organization.

Consider what triggered the recovery prompt

BitLocker can ask for recovery after detecting a security risk or a hardware, firmware, or software change that it cannot distinguish from an attack. If the prompt appeared immediately after a change, consider whether you can safely undo that change and try again. Microsoft’s “BitLocker overview” describes these triggers, but undoing a change is not guaranteed to restore access.

If no matching key turns up

Microsoft Support states: “Microsoft Support doesn’t have the ability to retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.” If you have checked the likely accounts, contacted the relevant organization, and searched offline copies without finding a matching key, support cannot generate a replacement that unlocks the encrypted data.

Microsoft says that when the key cannot be found and the triggering change cannot be undone, you may need to reset the device using a Windows recovery option. A reset removes all files; it is not a way to recover the encrypted data while preserving it. Also, most recovery options in the Windows Recovery Environment require the BitLocker key, so the key may still be needed to use them. See Microsoft’s “Recovery options in Windows” for the recovery-option requirements and risks.

Keep a backup for next time

Once you regain access—or when setting up another encrypted device—back up its recovery key to a location you can reach if the PC is unavailable. Microsoft’s “Back up your BitLocker recovery key” describes saving a copy to a Microsoft account, a file, a USB drive, or a printout. If you use USB storage, keep that drive separate from the computer. A new USB drive can store a backup you make, but buying one will not retrieve a key that is already lost.
