Neither Bitcoin nor stablecoins are universally cheaper or faster for international remittances. The result depends on the sending and receiving countries, transfer amount, provider, funding and payout methods, exchange rates, and whether the recipient can use or redeem the crypto asset. Compare the full cost and the time until the recipient can access spendable local money—not just the blockchain fee.

What counts as the real cost of a remittance?

Measure the same journey in each case: how much the sender pays, how much the recipient can actually use, and how long it takes for those funds to become accessible. A low advertised fee or network charge may be offset by conversion spreads, cash-out charges, or a costly payout method.

The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide methodology counts both the explicit transaction fee and the exchange-rate margin. Its published price observations are snapshots rather than live quotes, so check a provider’s current price and terms before sending.

  • Sender funding: Include any fee for adding money from a bank account, card, or other source.
  • Conversion: Include the price of buying Bitcoin or a stablecoin, and the exchange-rate margin when converting between currencies.
  • Transfer: Count the provider’s charge and, for a blockchain transfer, the network fee.
  • Recipient payout: Include charges to move the money to a bank account, mobile-money account, or cash pickup service.
  • Cash-out or spending: If the recipient needs local currency, include the cost and availability of selling or redeeming the crypto. If they keep or spend the asset instead, that is a different outcome from receiving local cash.

For a fair comparison, get quotes for the same corridor and amount, using the same funding source and intended payout. Compare the amount the recipient receives after all conversion and withdrawal steps.

Bitcoin and stablecoins expose the recipient to different risks

Bitcoin: a floating market price

Bitcoin is not pegged to a fiat currency. Its price can change against both the sender’s and recipient’s currencies while the sender buys it, the transfer is pending, or the recipient holds it. If the recipient needs local money, they must sell or convert it, which may add a fee and expose them to the exchange rate available at that time.

Bitcoin network fees vary with demand, and confirmation can take longer when the network is busy. A December 2022 International Monetary Fund working paper examined historical data in which Bitcoin transaction fees exceeded USD 5 in 15% of observations since 2015. The paper noted that a fee above USD 5 would equal at least 2.5% of a USD 200 remittance before other charges. This is historical analysis, not a current fee quote or forecast.

Stablecoins: a target peg, not a guarantee

A stablecoin such as USDC is designed to track a reference currency, often the US dollar. That target can reduce the token’s intended fiat-value fluctuation compared with Bitcoin, but it does not make every part of a remittance fixed or risk-free. The recipient may still face local-currency exchange-rate changes, and the ability to redeem a token at its reference value depends on the issuer, arrangement, and available service providers.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) notes that stablecoin stability cannot be fully guaranteed in every contingency. Its analysis also highlights risks connected with issuer redemption and the assets backing an arrangement. A token’s dollar reference does not protect a recipient from a change in the dollar’s value against their local currency.

Where time and cost accumulate along the route

A blockchain can settle a transfer quickly without making the whole remittance quick. The sender may first need to fund an account and pass identity checks; a provider may take time to process a purchase or sale; and a recipient may then wait for a bank, mobile-money service, or cash-out provider. Those steps can determine when the recipient has spendable funds.

  1. Sender pays in: Check how the chosen provider accepts the sender’s money and how long that funding method takes.
  2. Asset is purchased or converted: Check the quoted exchange rate, any spread or fee, and whether identity verification is required.
  3. Transfer is processed: For crypto, account for the network and provider’s processing steps; for a conventional service, check its stated delivery method and timing.
  4. Recipient receives or cashes out: Confirm that the recipient can access the wallet or account and convert or withdraw the funds through a supported local service.

In its 2026 mystery-shopping exercise, Banca d’Italia reported that 200 USDC transfers in its sampled Italy-linked corridors concluded in under 20 minutes where instant payment systems existed, but took one or two business days where standard bank transfers were required. The difference illustrates why network settlement time alone is not an end-to-end delivery estimate.

What published cost comparisons show—and what they do not

Traditional remittance costs also vary by route and amount. The Financial Stability Board’s 2025 G20 cross-border payments progress report gives global average costs of 6.5% for sending USD 200 and 4.3% for sending USD 500, based on World Bank data for Q1 2025. Separately, the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage displays a global average of 6.36% and says its latest displayed data release is Q3 2025; the page lists an August 18, 2025 update. These are source-specific global figures with different reference points, not quotes for a particular corridor.

Crypto routes do not reliably beat those benchmarks. Banca d’Italia’s 2026 mystery-shopping exercise measured total costs from 0.30% to nearly 9% for transfers of 200 USDC across ten Italy-linked corridors. The exercise covered routes from Italy to Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan; the results describe that sample, not all stablecoin transfers. Banca d’Italia summarized the finding: “On and off‑ramp frictions are the main source of cost and transfer duration.”

The BIS likewise cautions that the costs of converting into and out of stablecoins can make an all-in transfer as expensive as or more expensive than a bank transfer. A small on-chain fee does not reveal the cost of obtaining the token, selling it, or delivering local currency.

Compare a complete route, not an asset in isolation

What to compare Bitcoin route Stablecoin route, such as USDC Conventional remittance route
Total sender cost and recipient proceeds Include funding, Bitcoin purchase and sale, provider charges, network fee, exchange-rate spread, and any payout charge. The amount left for the recipient depends on the chosen route and quote. Include funding, stablecoin purchase and redemption or sale, provider charges, network fee, FX spread, and payout charges. The 2026 Banca d’Italia sample shows wide variation for 200 USDC, not a universal price. Include the transfer charge and exchange-rate margin, plus any payout charge. Compare the live quote for the same corridor and amount.
Time until spendable local funds Consider funding and exchange processing, network confirmation, then sale and payout. Blockchain confirmation alone is not the delivery time. Consider funding and conversion, transfer processing, redemption or sale, and local payout. In Banca d’Italia’s 2026 sample of 200 USDC transfers, observed delivery was under 20 minutes where instant payment systems existed and one to two business days where standard bank transfers were needed. Check the provider’s estimate for the selected funding and payout method; access may depend on bank, mobile-money, or cash-pickup processing.
Value and currency exposure Bitcoin’s market price can move against either relevant fiat currency before the recipient converts it. The token targets a fiat reference, but redemption depends on the arrangement and the recipient remains exposed to changes between the reference currency and local currency. The sender and recipient are exposed to the exchange rate and margin used for the transfer; the recipient generally receives the payout currency selected for the transaction.
Access and cash-out The recipient needs a way to receive and secure Bitcoin, and a supported route to sell or spend it if local currency is required. The recipient needs a compatible wallet or account and a supported way to redeem, sell, or spend the token. Access and liquidity depend on local providers. The recipient needs access to the provider’s supported payout method, which may be a bank account, mobile-money account, or cash pickup.
Availability, rules, and custody Confirm local service availability, provider terms, identity checks, and who controls the recipient’s wallet or account. Confirm local availability, redemption terms, local-currency liquidity, applicable rules, and whether the recipient or a provider holds the assets. Confirm the provider serves both countries, required identification, payout availability, and applicable terms.

Stablecoin and exchange access is jurisdiction-specific. BIS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures guidance treats stablecoin arrangements as a matter for careful assessment in cross-border payments; it does not establish universal availability or a single legal status. Verify the actual provider’s terms and the recipient’s ability to access the service in both countries.

A practical checklist before sending

  • Fix the comparison: Use the same sending country, receiving country, amount, sender funding method, and recipient payout method for every quote.
  • Ask for the recipient’s net amount: Confirm what will be available after purchase, transfer, conversion, and withdrawal—not only the sender’s displayed fee.
  • Check the full delivery time: Ask when the recipient can spend or withdraw the funds, including account verification and payout processing.
  • Confirm access first: Make sure the recipient has a compatible account or wallet and a usable local route to cash out or spend the asset.
  • Check the price risk: For Bitcoin, consider how much the value could move before conversion. For a stablecoin, check redemption terms and the local-currency exchange exposure.
  • Verify current terms and availability: Provider prices, supported corridors, payout options, and applicable requirements can change. A published global average or past mystery-shopping result is not a live offer.
