If your computer works normally, leave BIOS settings at their defaults. Change a setting only for a specific need, make one change at a time, save it, and confirm that the PC still starts normally. BIOS is the traditional name for the firmware setup interface; modern computers generally use UEFI.
For exact instructions, identify the PC manufacturer and model or the motherboard model, state what you want to accomplish, and say whether the computer currently boots. Menu names, available options, and recovery procedures differ by model and firmware version.
Why default settings are usually best
Default firmware settings are designed for ordinary configurations. ASUS states in its B550/A520 BIOS manual that, “In normal circumstances, the default BIOS settings apply to most conditions to ensure optimal performance.” The same guidance warns that inappropriate settings can cause instability or prevent the system from booting.
Do not apply an internet checklist just because it lists popular options. A setting that is useful for one motherboard, operating system, or workload may be unnecessary or unsafe on another.

Check these details before changing anything
- Record the exact PC, laptop, or motherboard model and current firmware version.
- Write down the specific goal: for example, enabling a security feature, using a virtual machine, or running memory at its advertised profile.
- Confirm whether the operating system currently boots.
- Read the manufacturer’s manual or support page for that exact model.
- Know how that model restores defaults or clears CMOS before experimenting.
Common settings and when they make sense

How to change a setting safely
- Open the manufacturer’s documented BIOS/UEFI entry method, commonly a key pressed during startup.
- Photograph or write down the original value before editing it.
- Change only the option required for your stated goal. Avoid manual CPU or memory voltage, timing, and overclock settings unless you understand the hardware and have a recovery plan.
- Use the firmware’s documented save-and-exit command.
- Let the computer restart fully. Confirm that the operating system loads and that the feature you needed works.
- If the system is unstable, undo the change before trying another setting.
Special case: enabling XMP or EXPO
Without a memory profile, RAM generally runs at supported JEDEC settings. XMP or EXPO applies a stored profile intended to reach the kit’s advertised speed. First verify that the kit, motherboard and CPU support the profile. Enable the matching profile only if you want that behavior, then test normal operation. A profile is not a guarantee of stability on every system; if crashes or boot loops appear, return to the previous setting or load defaults.
Special case: Secure Boot and UEFI
Secure Boot is a security feature, not a performance tweak. Before enabling it, check the current firmware boot mode and the way the operating system’s disk was installed. Microsoft notes that systems using Legacy/CSM may need a UEFI configuration for Secure Boot, but changing modes blindly can stop an existing installation from booting. Use the PC maker’s migration or recovery instructions when the current setup is uncertain.

What to do after a failed change
The PC still opens firmware setup
Use the model-specific “Load Optimized Defaults,” “Load Setup Defaults,” or equivalent command, then save and restart. Reapply only the setting you can verify is required.
The PC no longer boots
Power off and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for clearing CMOS or restoring factory defaults. On some systems this uses a jumper, button, battery procedure, or a dedicated recovery option. Afterward, check that the correct system disk is first in the boot order and run the maker’s hardware diagnostics if available.

Windows starts but is unstable
Return the most recent change to its prior value, especially a memory profile or performance setting. If instability remains, restore firmware defaults and test the computer before making any further edits.
Settings you should not change casually
- CPU core voltage, load-line calibration and other power controls.
- Manual memory voltage and timings.
- CPU or memory overclock controls.
- Legacy/CSM versus UEFI boot mode on an existing installation.
- Storage-controller mode when disks already contain an operating system.
- Firmware-update options without the correct file, power supply and vendor procedure.
A practical decision rule
If you cannot name the problem a setting solves, leave it unchanged. If you can name the goal, verify compatibility in the exact product documentation, change one option, save, test, and keep a recovery path available. That approach is safer than optimizing a generic list of BIOS options.
