Usually, leave BIOS 32-bit Data Transfer at its current default. It is a legacy IDE/ATA storage option—not a setting for 32-bit versus 64-bit Windows or Linux. It is generally irrelevant to NVMe and SATA drives using AHCI or RAID. On a system with an older PATA/IDE drive or ATAPI optical drive, enabling it may be appropriate if the device is supported and the system remains stable.
What does “32-bit Data Transfer” do?
This setting controls 32-bit data transfers for supported devices connected through legacy IDE/ATA storage. ASUS describes it as an option that “Enables or disables 32-bit data transfers for supported devices” in its W1N User Manual. The ITA-1710 manual also lists it among per-device IDE settings for ATA/ATAPI storage.
It does not tell the BIOS to use a 32-bit operating system, change Windows or Linux from 64-bit to 32-bit, or select the processor’s operating mode. The option’s precise behavior and default depend on the motherboard, controller, connected drive, and firmware configuration.
Should you enable it on your system?

Do not assume “Enabled” is the right value for every motherboard. For example, ASUS lists Enabled for the W1N, while defaults can differ across boards; check the manual for your exact model.

Will enabling it make a hard drive faster?
Do not expect a meaningful speed improvement on a modern SATA/AHCI or NVMe system. The setting is not the same as selecting a faster SATA mode or enabling an NVMe feature. ASUS explains that AHCI can let the storage driver use advanced Serial ATA features, including command ordering for random workloads; that is a separate controller-mode consideration, not evidence that this IDE option will speed up a SATA drive.
On legacy IDE hardware, any practical effect depends on the controller, firmware, drive, and software access path. The ASUS W1N manual lists historical DMA mode labels ranging from 16.7 MB/s to 100 MB/s, but those are mode labels in a manual table—not measured results or a performance promise for your computer. There is no general speed figure to apply to an individual system.

How to test the setting safely
- Write down the current BIOS value before changing anything.
- Check whether the computer actually has a PATA/IDE drive or ATAPI device, and note the controller mode. If it uses SATA in AHCI/RAID or NVMe storage, leaving the option alone is usually the sensible choice.
- Change only 32-bit Data Transfer, save the BIOS setting, and test repeated cold boots, drive detection, and ordinary file reads or copies.
- If the drive disappears, POST hangs, the operating system fails to boot, or reads become unreliable, return the option to its original value or disable it.
Do not change the SATA controller from IDE/compatibility mode to AHCI or RAID as part of this test. That is a separate configuration choice and can affect whether an existing operating-system installation boots. ASUS describes Standard IDE as a compatibility mode for treating SATA devices as Parallel ATA and advises reverting advanced IDE choices if problems occur.
