A separate oneM2M bicycle-sharing example shows one possible flow—NFC access, a smartphone gateway and sensor alerts—but it is an illustration, not proof that the hackathon project used that design.
What is known about the named project?
The project title appears under the “oneM2M International Hackathon (2024)” section of a oneM2M presentation. The presentation is 2025 meeting material; 2024 is the year of the hackathon section, not the presentation date. Its accessible text does not identify the project team or describe hardware, software, cellular technology, testing, deployment or results. It is therefore accurate to call this a listed hackathon project, but not a documented commercial bike-share service or a confirmed implementation of any particular architecture.
No project-specific fleet size, latency, coverage, battery life, reliability, cost or test results are stated. In particular, the title alone does not establish whether it used NB-IoT, LTE-M, another cellular option, or a named carrier or modem.
How oneM2M and cellular IoT fit together
oneM2M describes a horizontal architecture with three broad layers: applications, middleware services and networks. Its service layer provides common capabilities so applications and devices do not each have to implement those functions independently. Cellular connectivity can carry device communications, while oneM2M provides a standardized way for applications to use service-layer functions and relevant network capabilities.

Applications and service functions
An Application Entity (AE) hosts application logic. In a bike-share design, that could mean the rider-facing app, fleet-management software or logic on a device; these are explanatory examples, not a verified inventory for the hackathon project.
A Common Services Entity (CSE) supplies shared functions such as data storage and sharing, access control and authorization, event detection and notification, group communication, scheduling, device management and location services. The underlying Network Services Entity represents network capabilities exposed to the service layer.

The cellular standards connection
The oneM2M technical-specification index describes TS-0026, “3GPP Interworking,” as covering interworking between the oneM2M service layer and an underlying 3GPP network so relevant Cellular IoT features can benefit applications. The index also identifies TS-0033 for interworking with external proximal IoT technologies. This establishes a standards path for cellular integration, not the specific radio or network used by the named project.
oneM2M also illustrates a gateway and Interworking Proxy Entity (IPE) pattern for bringing systems with different connectivity technologies into a common CSE. Its developer example mentions cellular NB-IoT alongside LoRa and Sigfox in a street-lighting scenario. That example explains an architectural option; it is not evidence about the bike-share project.

What a separate oneM2M bike-share example illustrates
A Release 3 technical report contains a bicycle-sharing scenario that makes the architecture more concrete. It is a separate illustrative use case, not a description of the hackathon project and not a mandatory implementation recipe. The report is version 3.0.1, and it marks pages containing the use-case flow as draft material that should not be relied on as a final normative specification.
- Register the service and its resources. The scenario assumes a user is already a bicycle-sharing member and has a smartphone app for bicycle sharing and navigation. Applications register the service and subscribe to changes; resource ownership and access rights follow the service arrangements.
- Unlock the bicycle. The user tags the bicycle locker with a phone’s NFC interface. The report puts it this way: “To unlock the bicycle, the user tags the locker of the bicycle through the NFC interface.” NFC is the example’s access method, not a oneM2M requirement.
- Relay a status change. Sensors report a changed bicycle status to the service platform through the smartphone acting as a gateway. The platform then notifies the service provider.
- Handle an urgent sensor alert. In the report’s example, a tire-pressure sensor detects low pressure in the front tire and sends the alert with location information through the smartphone. The platform notifies the operator, which can identify a nearby repair shop and return route information.
- Adjust reporting when the phone is constrained. The scenario also discusses changing reporting or subscription behavior when smartphone battery is low, then sending accumulated information later.
How data, APIs and security are handled in oneM2M
oneM2M represents system information—including AEs, CSEs, sensor data and commands—as resources in a CSE. Its API documentation describes CRUD+N operations: create, retrieve, update, delete and notification. Resources are addressable, and access to them is subject to access-control privileges. In a bike-share system, this model can provide a common way to represent information and notify authorized applications when it changes.

The standard’s listed security capabilities include enrolment, security-association establishment, authorization, end-to-end security and privacy management. The developer documentation also describes provisioning identifiers and credentials and establishing protected sessions. These are capabilities a deployment can use; available information does not establish the hackathon project’s security configuration, privacy policy, key management or threat testing.

The standards and illustrative example describe possible building blocks, not a ready-made deployment. A team designing a bike-share system would still need to make choices based on its operating area, hardware and service requirements.

- TRACKER INCLUDED, HIDDEN INSIDE, AND SERVICEABLE: The tracker sits inside the reflector housing, so nothing shows from the outside and nothing rattles loose on rough road. It arrives pre-installed - pair it to Apple Find My once from your phone and you are set. And because the module lifts out, you can replace it yourself years from now instead of replacing the whole reflector. Sealed against rain and road spray
- NO SUBSCRIPTION, NO MONTHLY FEES: Pay once and you are done. No account to fund, no data plan, no renewal notice, and no service that can be switched off later. The protection you buy today is the protection you keep
- HIDDEN IN THE ONE PART NOBODY BOTHERS TO REMOVE: A reflector is the least interesting thing on a bike, which is exactly why it works. Nothing looks added, nothing looks worth taking, and tamper-resistant hardware means it does not come off with a pocket multi-tool
- A WORKING REFLECTOR, NOT JUST A CASE: This replaces your rear reflector rather than adding clutter beside it - it reflects properly at night instead of wearing a strip of tape. Clamps to standard 25.4-31.8mm seatposts on road bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes and scooters
- WHAT IS IN THE BOX: 1x rear reflector with the tracker module pre-installed inside, 1x seatpost clamp with sizing shims, 2x tamper-resistant bolts, 1x matching security driver, 1x quick-start card, and 1x warranty registration card
- Cellular option: Select a supported 3GPP feature and verify operator availability, coverage, reporting needs and device power budget. The project’s choice is not stated.
- Gateway placement: Decide whether devices communicate directly or rely on a nearby gateway such as a rider’s smartphone. The separate oneM2M bike-share example uses the phone as a relay.
- Access method: NFC is the report’s locker-unlock example, not a universal requirement. The access method must fit the physical lock and service design.
- Reporting policy: Distinguish routine updates from urgent events, and define what happens when a gateway is unavailable or low on battery. The illustrative report describes adapting behavior and sending accumulated information later.
- Interoperability and protection: Map device data into CSE resources, use appropriate interworking where needed, and configure authorization and end-to-end protection for the deployment.
