A passkey is a cryptographic sign-in credential linked to an account. You approve its use with an authenticator—such as a phone, computer, or security key—often by unlocking that device with a biometric, PIN, or pattern. Passkeys are designed to resist phishing, but where a credential is stored, how it syncs, and how you recover it depend on the provider and the service. Plan those details before relying on a passkey as your only way into an account.
What is a passkey?
A passkey is a FIDO cryptographic credential associated with your account on a website or app. It may be held by a phone or computer, a credential manager, or a hardware security key. At sign-in, the service verifies the credential through a cryptographic exchange rather than asking you to type a password. FIDO Alliance describes passkeys as credentials built on its standards.
Your fingerprint, face scan, device PIN, or pattern is generally a local way to authorize use of the credential. It is not itself sent to the website as your passkey. “Passkey” is a cross-platform term, not the name of one company’s proprietary feature.
Why are passkeys gaining adoption?
In its report published May 7, 2026, FIDO Alliance said 90% of surveyed consumers were familiar with passkeys, 75% had enabled one on at least one account, and 49% used passkeys regularly when available. The online consumer survey was conducted in April 2026 by Sapio Research among 11,000 adults who regularly log in to online services across 10 countries: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, China, and India. FIDO reported a margin of error of ±0.9 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. These are survey results, not a count of all internet users. Read FIDO Alliance’s 2026 report.

Separately, FIDO estimated that 5 billion passkeys were in active use worldwide in 2026. That estimate combines publicly available information with FIDO’s internal deployment data; it is not a number calculated from the consumer survey.
Adoption is not the same as replacing passwords everywhere. FIDO reported that 68% of surveyed organizations were deploying, piloting, or rolling out passkeys for employee sign-ins, but 57% of organizations that had deployed passkeys still relied on phishable methods for primary day-to-day sign-in. The workforce survey covered 1,400 decision-makers involved in employee sign-in, authentication, or passkey deployment at organizations with at least 500 employees in the same 10 countries; FIDO reported a margin of error of ±2.6 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Are passkeys safer than passwords?
Passkeys use public-key cryptography and an origin-bound sign-in flow: the credential is associated with the legitimate service, which is designed to make a fake site unable to use it as if it were the real one. FIDO describes passkeys as designed to resist phishing. That is a meaningful security advantage over passwords that people may reuse or enter on lookalike sites, but it is not a guarantee that an account can never be compromised. FIDO’s passkey overview explains the credential model.

A service may still allow password sign-in, email codes, or other fallback methods, and those methods can remain a route into the account. The 2026 workforce findings show why the presence of passkeys alone does not prove that an organization has eliminated phishable sign-in.

Where can you store a passkey?
The place that manages your passkey affects which devices can use it and what happens if you lose access. FIDO identifies built-in credential managers such as iCloud Keychain and Google Password Manager, third-party providers such as 1Password and Dashlane, and physical FIDO security keys as options. These are examples, not endorsements; their current terms and exact feature sets are not established here. FIDO’s overview discusses passkey storage choices.
| Storage choice | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Platform credential manager | Check which of your devices and services can use it, whether credentials sync in that provider’s ecosystem, and how access is restored if you lose a device or provider-account access. |
| Third-party credential provider | Check device and service compatibility, sync and portability, and the provider’s recovery process. The examples above do not establish a comprehensive feature comparison. |
| Physical FIDO security key | A key can hold a device-bound credential and may serve as a recovery credential when you lose devices holding synced passkeys. Confirm that the specific service accepts the key and add it using that service’s instructions; one key is not a universal recovery method. |
These options are not interchangeable in every service or setup. Compatibility can depend on the service, credential provider, browser, and software version, so there is no single support matrix that applies to everyone.

What happens if you lose your phone?
The answer depends on where the passkey is managed, whether it syncs to another device, and what recovery routes the service and provider offer. Losing one device does not necessarily mean losing a synced passkey, but you should not assume that every provider syncs credentials or that every service supports the same recovery process.
For its own implementation, Apple says passkeys stored through iCloud Keychain can be recovered using iCloud Keychain escrow, which Apple says is protected against brute-force attacks, even by Apple. This is Apple’s description of iCloud Keychain, not a guarantee about other providers. Apple explains iCloud Keychain security and recovery.

FIDO also identifies a physical security key as a possible recovery credential if you lose access to devices holding synced passkeys. FIDO reported that 89% of surveyed organizations were confident they could restore access when passkeys were lost. That figure reflects respondents’ confidence, not independent verification that every recovery process works in practice.
How to decide whether to use a passkey
- Check support for your setup. Confirm that the service and the devices you use support the passkey flow you want. Follow the service’s current instructions; support can vary by provider, browser, and version.
- Choose where it will be managed. Identify the credential provider that will save the passkey and confirm whether it syncs to the other devices you actually use.
- Understand recovery first. Review the service’s recovery process, including what happens if you lose a device or access to the credential provider. Do this before removing other sign-in methods or depending on a single device.
- Consider a physical backup for important accounts. If the service accepts security keys and you are comfortable keeping and managing one, add a key according to the service’s instructions. Do not assume it will recover every account automatically.
- Keep the roles clear. The service associates the passkey with your account; the credential provider or authenticator manages the user-side credential; your device’s local unlock method authorizes its use.
FIDO’s recovery guidance and Apple’s implementation illustrate why these checks matter, but exact setup and recovery steps must come from each service’s current documentation. FIDO Alliance and Apple describe their respective approaches.
