For most U.S. buyers seeking an unlocked Android phone instead of a ZTE, start with the Google Pixel 10. Tom’s Guide names it its best unlocked phone and reports broad U.S. LTE and 5G band support. If keeping the purchase cost down matters more, its Motorola Moto G (2026) pick is a budget option, but its 720p-class screen is a significant compromise. In either case, verify the exact U.S. model with your carrier before buying: “unlocked” does not guarantee activation.
Best ZTE alternatives at a glance
| What matters most | Phone to consider | What the available evidence says | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mainstream unlocked Android | Google Pixel 10 | Tom’s Guide names it its best unlocked phone and reports broad U.S. LTE and 5G support. The guide lists availability through Google and multiple carriers, as well as an Amazon retailer link. Its reported specifications include a 6.3-inch display, Tensor G5, and 12GB RAM. In Tom’s Guide’s battery test, it ran for 13 hours 13 minutes; that is a reviewer test result, not a guarantee of everyday battery life. | Lower-cost Android | Motorola Moto G (2026) | Tom’s Guide names it its best unlocked phone under $200 and lists an Amazon retailer link. The guide reports a 6.7-inch, 1604×720 display and Dimensity 6300. Its battery test ran for 19 hours 10 minutes, a reviewer result under that test’s conditions. | Prefer to stay with ZTE | Axon or nubia catalog devices | ZTE’s global catalog and support selector list devices and support entries, but do not establish current U.S. stock, carrier approval, or a U.S.-valid warranty. These are source-attributed starting points, not a complete head-to-head test. Compare those details for the exact models and listings you are considering.
Why the Pixel 10 is the strongest mainstream starting point
For a buyer who wants an unlocked Android phone that is easier to evaluate for U.S. use, the Pixel 10 is the clearest first option in the cited comparison. Tom’s Guide identifies it as its best unlocked phone and reports broad U.S. LTE and 5G band support, with listings through Google and multiple carriers. Those facts make it a reasonable shortlist choice—not a promise that every carrier will activate every unit.

When the Moto G (2026) makes sense
The Moto G (2026) is the budget-oriented alternative in Tom’s Guide’s comparison, which calls it the best unlocked phone under $200. That category label is the guide’s editorial designation, not a promise of a current price. Check the live listing and exact U.S. unlocked version before comparing totals.
The clearest trade-off is the display: the guide reports a 6.7-inch, 1604×720 panel and notes that it is dim. This is a practical compromise if you care about sharp text, bright outdoor viewing, or a display comparable to a premium ZTE model. Tom’s Guide recorded 19 hours 10 minutes in its battery test, but that result reflects the reviewer’s test conditions rather than guaranteed daily use. Confirm the exact device with Motorola’s compatibility lookup and your carrier.

How to confirm a phone will work with your U.S. carrier
Unlocked status describes a restriction on the phone; it does not prove that a particular carrier will accept its model, IMEI, or activation method. Confirm compatibility for the exact unit and intended network before spending money.
- Identify the exact model. Check the listing for the U.S. model or SKU, not just the phone family name. Imported or regional variants can differ.
- Check the intended carrier. Use the carrier’s current device-compatibility or IMEI checker. Motorola’s U.S. lookup is another way to check Motorola devices; it is not a substitute for the destination carrier’s approval. Motorola describes its page as a way to “Find which device works on U.S. carriers.” Open Motorola’s carrier compatibility page.
- Verify SIM activation. Confirm that the phone supports the physical SIM or eSIM setup you plan to use and that the carrier can activate it.
- Check seller protections. Review who sells the device, the return window, warranty terms, and whether the warranty applies in the United States.
- Recheck before ordering. Stock, listings, and carrier eligibility can change. If the phone is refurbished, imported, or sold by a third party, verify the exact device being shipped rather than relying on a generic product-page title.
A current buying guide also warns that unlocked status alone does not guarantee activation. See its unlocked-phone guidance.

Should you buy another ZTE phone instead?
Possibly, but a global product page is not proof that a particular Axon or nubia model is sold for the U.S. market, accepted by a U.S. carrier, or covered by a U.S.-valid warranty. ZTE’s support selector includes older Axon support entries and says prices and availability may vary by country or region. For any imported model, establish the exact model variant, network bands, Google-service details, carrier acceptance, seller return terms, and warranty coverage before buying. ZTE’s catalog and support selector do not settle those U.S.-specific questions.
What to compare before choosing
Once a phone passes the carrier check, compare the factors that affect daily use and ownership rather than relying on brand or “unlocked” status alone:
Rank #4
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps

- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Total purchase cost, seller, and return window.
- Exact U.S. SKU, carrier activation, and physical SIM or eSIM support.
- Published software and security-support period for the specific model.
- Screen size, resolution, brightness, and viewing comfort.
- Camera capabilities, battery behavior, charging, and repair options.
- Warranty coverage and access to service in the United States.
The cited comparisons support a Pixel 10 starting point and a lower-cost Moto G option, but do not establish a full ranking across these factors. Confirm details from the manufacturer, carrier, and seller for the exact listing rather than treating family-level information as a complete specification.

Android Central reported in July 2026 that OnePlus would stop launching new phones in the U.S. and Europe while continuing support for current devices. That does not mean every existing OnePlus phone is unavailable, but stock and the future support horizon for a new purchase need current verification. Read Android Central’s report.
