For a typical H.264 YouTube Live stream at 1080p and 30 fps, use 14 Mbps video bitrate with CBR. YouTube’s current guidance lists 14 Mbps as recommended and 5 Mbps as its minimum for this format. To leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, plan for about 17.5 Mbps of stable upload capacity for the stream alone (14 ÷ 0.8). That is a planning calculation, not a guarantee from any Airtel plan.
If your encoder sends AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube lists 10 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum at 1080p30. Check which codec your encoder actually sends before choosing the figure. What bitrate should you use for 1080p30 on Airtel Xstream Fiber?
For H.264, start at 14 Mbps video, constant bitrate (CBR). The 5 Mbps figure is YouTube’s minimum for H.264 at 1080p30, not its recommended target and not a promise that every scene will look clean at that rate. For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube lists 10 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum. The upload figures are arithmetic based on YouTube’s advice to leave 20% of upload bandwidth free; they are not separate YouTube bitrate requirements. For H.264, 14 ÷ 0.8 = 17.5 Mbps. Does an Airtel plan’s advertised speed guarantee enough upload?
No. Airtel India advertises broadband tiers as “up to” 40 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps and 1 Gbps, but those plan ceilings do not establish the sustained upload speed available to a particular subscriber. Airtel’s terms say symmetric speeds apply only where the last mile is fiber. Check your own connection rather than inferring upload capacity from a plan name or download result. YouTube notes that upload can be lower than download and that other people sharing the network can limit the bandwidth available to your stream. Run several upload tests at the time and place you expect to go live, using the same computer and connection path; if you normally stream over Ethernet, test over Ethernet. Set the YouTube Live encoder for 1080p30
- Set the video format: choose 1920 × 1080 resolution and 30 frames per second.
- Choose the bitrate for the codec sent to YouTube: H.264 at 14 Mbps recommended (5 Mbps minimum), or AV1/H.265 at 10 Mbps recommended (4 Mbps minimum). Use a codec your encoder supports for YouTube ingest.
- Use CBR: set rate control to constant bitrate rather than allowing the bitrate to vary substantially.
- Set keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Choose the connection protocol: use RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure variant of RTMP.
- Set audio and color: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio; its advanced settings specify 128 kbps for stereo. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and progressive scan.
- Test before the event: stream representative motion and sound, then check YouTube’s stream health and any encoder messages.
These are YouTube’s published live-ingestion recommendations. The exact control names vary by encoder, so confirm that the selected codec, rate control and keyframe settings are actually being sent. YouTube live encoder settings
Test the whole connection before going live
- Run multiple upload tests from the streaming device and its planned location, preferably at the time of day you will broadcast.
- Compare the results with the upload headroom target, not just the encoder bitrate: about 17.5 Mbps for H.264 at 14 Mbps, before other traffic or a backup stream.
- Run an unlisted or private test with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio and representative movement.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health while the test runs. If it reports connection instability or dropped frames, reduce bitrate or resolution and test again.
Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, shared household use, the last-mile connection and the measurement time can all affect the result. If Wi-Fi is unreliable, testing with Ethernet can help determine whether the local wireless link is the problem; a cable cannot raise the upload capacity of the underlying service. Troubleshooting bitrate and connection problems
- YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth or the stream is unstable: repeat an upload test from the actual streaming device and location. Pause other uploads or streams, then lower the video bitrate or resolution if the connection still cannot sustain the target.
- Speed tests look good, but the live stream drops frames: test at the time of the broadcast, check whether other users or devices are consuming upload, and try Ethernet if the stream currently uses Wi-Fi. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not proof of sustained performance.
- The stream looks poor despite meeting the minimum: the minimum is not the recommended target. If upload capacity permits, use the codec-specific recommended bitrate; also test scenes with the same amount of motion as the real event.
- You selected 10 Mbps but use H.264: that is YouTube’s stated recommended figure for AV1/H.265 at 1080p30, not H.264. For H.264, the recommendation is 14 Mbps; use the lower rate only if your encoder or connection requires it, and assess the result in a test.
- The Airtel plan speed seems high enough, but upload is not: advertised “up to” tiers do not confirm the upload available to your line. Check the actual upload result and, where relevant, whether the last mile is fiber.
