You must sign up with the selected service to obtain an API key. Provider availability, terms, and usage limits can change, so check the provider’s current documentation and pricing before building around it.
Other plugins to investigate, not assume are best
The WordPress.org screenshot-tag page also surfaces WP Screenshot, WP Featured Screenshot, Super Link Preview, ShrinkTheWeb (STW) Website Previews Plugin, Open Link, and Urlbox Screenshots. Their directory descriptions point to different workflows, but a tag page does not establish current maintenance, compatibility, or quality. Treat these as discovery leads and inspect each current listing against your requirements.

- Output: Does the plugin build a directory, or only insert screenshots into posts and pages?
- Presentation: Look for grid or list layouts, titles and descriptions, shortcode or block support, and control over columns.
- Capture workflow: Determine whether screenshots refresh manually, on a schedule, or through a background API job.
- Image handling: Check whether screenshots are stored in your Media Library or served by an external service.
- Service dependency: Confirm whether a third-party account or API key is required, which providers are supported, and what usage limits or costs apply.
- Maintenance: On the current plugin listing, review the latest update, WordPress version tested, support activity, and security history.
Installation counts and “tested with” versions shown in directory listings are time-sensitive metadata; they do not by themselves prove quality or ongoing maintenance. The screenshot-tag page is useful for finding candidates, not for making a current quality ranking.

If you are publishing a plugin and mean its screenshots on the WordPress.org plugin page—not thumbnail previews in your own site’s directory—the guidance is different. WordPress Developer Resources says, “Screenshots must be local to display. Links to external files won’t work.” Its Plugin Handbook documents lowercase names such as screenshot-1.png and screenshot-2.jpg. The page was last updated January 31, 2025. - Choose whether you need a managed external-links gallery or screenshots embedded in existing content.
- Open the current WordPress.org listing for each finalist and confirm its update history, tested WordPress version, support activity, and the features you depend on.
- If a plugin calls a screenshot service, verify the provider’s current API access, terms, and usage costs before adding URLs or scheduling refreshes.
- Test the intended presentation and refresh workflow on a staging site with representative target pages, including pages that load slowly or show consent prompts.
