OBS Studio is the best documented Windows starting point for looping videos on a 24/7 YouTube Live channel when you can leave the PC, its internet connection, and the encoder running. Use OBS’s Media Source for one video or VLC Video for a playlist. Which Windows software should you use?
For local playback on a Windows computer, choose OBS Studio. Its built-in Media Source can loop a single file; its VLC Video source can loop a playlist and optionally shuffle it. OBS documents these controls, but they do not make a local stream independent of the PC: the computer, media, network connection, and encoder must remain available.
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder. As YouTube Help explains, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” OBS is the encoder and playback tool in this setup; YouTube Studio provides the live control room and stream credentials.

YouTube’s encoder options page lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams. Their current plans and limits should be checked with the providers.

Set up a looping video in OBS
- Enable YouTube live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, follow the channel’s live-stream setup flow. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not plan on activating it moments before a scheduled broadcast.
- Choose a source in OBS. In the Sources panel, select +, then Media Source for one file or VLC Video for a playlist. OBS Media Source supports MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM files.
- Set the loop behavior. For Media Source, enable its loop option. For VLC Video, add the files to the playlist and enable Loop Playlist; enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the order randomized. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. Match the VLC architecture to OBS: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the channel.
- Check the preview before going live. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, confirm the correct video and audio are present, then use YouTube’s controls to go live. A successful preview confirms the feed is reaching YouTube; it does not guarantee that a local PC or connection will remain available indefinitely.
Plan for 24/7 operation and saved recordings
A loop setting controls media playback, not unattended reliability. With OBS on Windows, a power interruption, PC restart, network failure, OBS crash, or unavailable source file can interrupt the feed. OBS’s media-source documentation describes playback features; it does not certify automatic recovery or a particular computer specification.
Also plan separately for recording and archives. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for streams beyond that threshold, so do not assume a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved in full. If you need a copy, arrange recording and storage independently and verify that the recording process is working.

Other cloud options
YouTube’s encoder list also identifies Gyre and Upstream for cloud-based 24/7 streaming use cases. These are alternatives to running OBS on a dedicated Windows PC, rather than Windows applications for local looping. Compare their current media limits, supported controls, pricing, and recovery behavior on the providers’ own sites before choosing; those details are not established here.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
- VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC as well.
- The video plays once and stops: Check that Media Source’s loop control is enabled, or that Loop Playlist is enabled for VLC Video.
- The playlist does not appear or a clip fails: Confirm that the files are still at the paths used in the source and that the media is among OBS Media Source’s supported formats. Reopen the source settings and verify the playlist entries.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Confirm the server URL and stream key were copied from the intended stream in Live Control Room and entered in OBS’s stream settings. Keep the key private; if it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The preview is not ready: Make sure channel live streaming is enabled; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Check OBS’s connection and source output, then wait for the Live Control Room preview before using Go live.
- The stream stops when the PC is off: That is expected for a local OBS setup. Use a cloud service if the broadcast must continue without the PC and home connection.
- A full-day archive is missing: YouTube’s stated automatic archive threshold covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed 24/7 archive. Use a separate recording plan for longer broadcasts.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Looping a file does not grant permission to rebroadcast its contents. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before broadcasting. A technically successful loop is not a guarantee that YouTube will permit the content or that it complies with channel policies.
