To use a 180Hz gaming monitor at its highest supported rate, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the correct monitor, and choose the highest refresh rate available at the resolution you want. Confirm both values in the display information panel afterward. The monitor’s 180Hz label alone does not guarantee that Windows, the connection, and a game are all using 180Hz.
Set the refresh rate in Windows
-
Connect the monitor to a graphics output on your PC using a connection that the monitor and graphics hardware support for your target resolution and refresh rate. A cable or adapter cannot overcome a limit imposed by either device’s port.
-
Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.

Windows marks rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk. Selecting an asterisked rate changes the resolution, so check the resulting mode rather than assuming you have kept your preferred resolution.

Check the offered rates at your intended resolution. Windows may show a rate only with a different resolution, and an asterisk indicates that selecting it changes the current one.

Consult the manual for the exact monitor and the specifications for the PC’s graphics output. Supported resolution-and-refresh combinations can vary by input port and model; a manufacturer may also require a particular high-refresh mode.
-
Check the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) for any manufacturer-specific input or high-refresh option. There is no universal OSD setting or response-time preset that applies to every 180Hz monitor.

Use VRR when the display and game support it
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adapt its refresh rate dynamically. Windows’ display information panel reports whether the display supports VRR. If it does, enable the compatible VRR path available for your hardware and check its behavior in a game that supports the feature; Windows says many popular games use VRR automatically. Whether it reduces tearing or judder depends on the game and setup.

Windows 11: treat DRR as separate from VRR
Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a Windows 11 feature, not another name for a monitor’s maximum refresh rate. It requires a VRR-capable display and a refresh rate of at least 120Hz. Microsoft warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games. If a game runs below its expected maximum, turn DRR off and check the game again.
Enable HDR only if the full setup supports it
HDR is optional and depends on both the PC and display supporting the HDR mode you want. Microsoft’s guidance for an external HDR display specifies HDR10 support and a compatible connection, listing DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0 or higher, USB-C, or Thunderbolt. The connector type by itself does not establish which resolution-and-refresh combinations the particular monitor and PC support.
If SDR content looks too bright or too dark while HDR is on, adjust the SDR content brightness slider under Settings > System > Display > HDR. Restart an app if its appearance does not respond to the adjustment. Microsoft’s HDR troubleshooting guidance says: “If you’re using an HDMI connection and your display supports HDR over a DisplayPort connection, use DisplayPort instead to connect your PC and display.” That is conditional HDR advice, not a universal recommendation that every 180Hz setup needs DisplayPort.
