Before switching from WhatsApp, check whether your phone can update to a supported operating system. An older handset may still install an app without running it reliably, and app-based alternatives only reach people who use that same service. For basic texts with people who will not switch, Android’s built-in SMS option may be more practical.
First check whether your phone can still run WhatsApp
“Older phone” does not tell you enough to choose a messenger. Find the exact Android or iOS version in the phone’s settings, then check whether a system update is available. WhatsApp’s help information lists Android 6.0 and newer as supported. Its iOS information says that from November 30, 2026, iPhones need iOS 15.5 or newer; because that date is upcoming, check the current WhatsApp Help Center before relying on it.
If the phone cannot update to the required version, changing apps may not solve the problem. An app-store listing or successful installation is not proof that messaging, calls, or day-to-day performance will work properly.
Compare the options by how you need to communicate

Signal-to-Signal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted and use an internet connection such as Wi-Fi or mobile data, according to Signal’s installation guidance. For any internet messenger, ask the people you need to reach which service they will actually use before making the change. An alternative with few of your contacts on it may be less useful than the built-in messaging route.

Signal on an older phone: check the cutoff and storage
Signal lists Android 6.0 or later and iOS 15 or later as its installation requirements. Its support page says Android 5.0 (Lollipop) and iOS 14 are unsupported. Signal notes that it keeps older operating systems working as long as possible, but technical limits can end support; an app may open while no longer sending or receiving messages or calls. Before installing or updating Signal, check available internal storage. Signal’s troubleshooting advice recommends at least 50 MB free for an install or update; that figure is Signal-specific, not a general minimum for other messaging apps. Its installation guidance also explains that Signal Desktop requires an already working Signal account on an Android or iPhone, so desktop alone cannot replace a phone that no longer runs Signal.
Use Android SMS or RCS when contacts will not switch
Google Messages is a different kind of option from Signal or Messenger. SMS is carrier text messaging, while RCS adds messaging features where supported. This route can avoid asking every contact to adopt a separate internet app, but the precise features available depend on the phone, carrier or service, and recipient. Do not assume that RCS works on a particular older Japanese flip phone without checking its model and local service.

TechRadar’s January 2026 overview describes Google Messages as pre-installed on nearly every Android phone, not every phone. If it is absent, unavailable in the phone’s app store, or missing the features you need, the handset’s software build and carrier support may be limiting factors.

A practical checklist before you switch
- Identify the installed system version. Open the phone’s system settings and look for its Android or iOS version and available updates. Compare that version with the messaging app’s current official requirements.
- Check the exact app-store listing. Confirm that the app is eligible for your handset and region. Eligibility does not guarantee smooth operation, so consider the phone’s responsiveness as well.
- Check free storage. Make room before an install or update. For Signal specifically, its troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 50 MB free internal storage.
- Ask your contacts what they use. Confirm that the people you need to reach will use the same app. If not, see whether SMS or RCS meets your basic needs.
- Try the essential tasks. Verify ordinary messages, photo sharing, voice messages, and calls on the actual phone before depending on the new setup. Support for a feature on an app does not prove it will work well on an older handset.
What if no suitable app works?
If the phone cannot update to a supported OS and the app you want is unavailable or unreliable, use carrier messaging if it meets your needs, or consider a newer device only if continued app-based messaging is essential. The information available here does not establish a specific replacement model or prove that every app alternative will work on a given older phone.
