For an occasional website capture, start with the screenshot feature in the browser you already use. For recurring captures, app integrations, or bulk work, evaluate a screenshot API. The right choice depends on whether you need a quick manual image, reliable handling of dynamic pages, control over the viewport and output, or an automated workflow.
This is a workflow-based comparison, not a hands-on ranking: the available documentation does not establish a controlled test of all five options. Browser features and extensions suit individual captures; APIs suit repeatable developer workflows. For an API starting point, ScreenshotNeo puts clean captures first and bills only clean shots.
How to choose a website screenshot tool
First decide whether you are capturing a page for yourself or building a repeatable process. A browser command or extension may be enough for a one-off image. An API is more appropriate when screenshots need to run from an application, script, or scheduled job.
- Frequency: Manual tools are convenient for occasional captures; APIs reduce repeated manual work.
- Page behavior: Lazy-loaded images, animations, sticky headers, consent banners, and chat overlays can change the result. “Full page” does not guarantee that every dynamic element appears.
- Output and control: Check whether the tool supports the needed viewport, device dimensions, image format, and PDF output.
- Privacy: Consider whether capture happens locally in your browser or through a hosted service, and review the tool’s current data-handling terms.
- Cost and quotas: Confirm current plan limits and pricing on the vendor’s own site. Free tiers and reliability figures are vendor claims, not independent comparisons.
To choose confidently, test the exact page and viewport you care about. The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled, independent test across these five options.

Five options by workflow
1. ScreenshotNeo: API and MCP server for repeatable captures
ScreenshotNeo is a developer-oriented website screenshot API and MCP server. It is the first API to try if you want clean captures: before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
A basic request returns an image or PDF for a URL. Use the API documentation for options and response details: ScreenshotNeo API docs.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans range from a free 1,000 shots per month with no card to paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000; every feature is on every plan.
2. Chrome DevTools: occasional captures without an extension
Stravue describes Chrome DevTools as a free built-in route to a full-page PNG, using the command “Capture full size screenshot.” That source is not Chrome’s own documentation, so exact current steps, platform differences, and limits should be checked against the Chrome version you use. DevTools is a sensible first stop for a one-off capture if you already have the page open, but the available evidence does not establish how it handles every dynamic or very long page.

3. Firefox’s built-in screenshot feature: a browser-native alternative
Stravue describes Firefox’s right-click screenshot feature as offering a full-page save. The current menu label and behavior may vary by Firefox version and platform, so confirm them in your installed browser. This option avoids installing an extension, but the evidence here does not establish its output formats or limits across versions.

4. GoFullPage: a one-click extension workflow
Stravue names GoFullPage as an example of a free extension for a single full-page capture. Extension availability, permissions, compatibility, privacy practices, export formats, and paid features can change. Before installing it, inspect its current browser-store listing and determine whether captured page data stays in the browser or is sent elsewhere. An extension is convenient, but it is not automatically the right choice for sensitive pages or unattended automation.
5. ScreenshotOne, Urlbox, or Browserless: hosted capture APIs
ScreenshotOne’s official documentation describes full-page screenshots, viewport controls, lazy-loaded content handling, custom JavaScript and CSS, and page-cleanup controls. Its documentation is evidence of its own stated capabilities, not independent comparative proof. A starting point is its Getting Started documentation and options documentation.
ScreenshotOne documents output image responses and notes that output format affects the response content type. Its full-page options describe a default maximum slice height of 4,000 pixels and a configurable maximum of 16,000 pixels; these are ScreenshotOne-specific settings, not general browser limits. Its options documentation also suggests experimenting with scroll increments in the 100–500 pixel range when a page needs scrolling to trigger lazy loading. A section-based algorithm is described for more complex animated pages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUrlbox and Browserless are other services to investigate for API or broader browser-automation workflows. Browserless’s comparison discusses both, but it is vendor-authored and does not substitute for checking current primary documentation. Compare each service’s current features, prices, quotas, concurrency, delivery options, and data-handling terms before choosing.

What ScreenshotNeo can automate
Beyond a basic URL capture, ScreenshotNeo offers full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF settings, HTML/CSS-to-image, custom CSS and JavaScript, and clicking an element before capture. It can wait for a selector, a delay, or network idle; hide selectors; block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; and set headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation. Other options include transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable cache TTL, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.
For pricing, the stated monthly plans are Free: 1,000 shots; Starter: $5 for 3,000; Growth: $15 for 15,000; Pro: $39 for 60,000; Scale: $99 for 250,000; and Business: $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free. Verify plan details on the site before purchase, since commercial terms can change.
Getting dependable results from full-page captures
Test the page behavior, not just the tool label
Run a test on the exact URL at the viewport you intend to use. If images appear only after scrolling, a single immediate capture may miss them. Try scrolling in smaller increments and allowing the page time to load between moves. ScreenshotOne’s documentation suggests 100–500 pixel increments for its own lazy-loading behavior; do not assume those values apply identically to every tool.

Cookie banners, newsletter prompts, chat widgets, sticky navigation, and animations can obscure or alter the screenshot. Decide whether these should remain, be dismissed, or be hidden, and use a tool that supports the needed interaction or cleanup. ScreenshotNeo’s cleanup can be switched off by step; ScreenshotOne documents page-cleanup controls. Neither vendor’s documented options guarantee a perfect result on every site.
Check inner scrolling and page length
A page may scroll inside a panel rather than the main document, so a full-page capture of the document may not show all panel content. Very long pages may also encounter tool-specific height or capture constraints. Confirm the output dimensions and inspect the bottom of the image or PDF rather than assuming the label “full page” means unlimited capture.

Practical trade-offs: privacy, performance, and cost
Privacy and access
Browser-native captures keep the workflow in the browser, while hosted APIs send a URL and capture request to a service. For private or authenticated pages, review the service’s terms and configure access credentials carefully. Do not put sensitive tokens into a URL that could be logged or shared; use only authentication mechanisms supported by the tool and protect API keys.
Performance and reliability
Capture time depends on how the page loads and which waiting conditions you choose. Waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle can improve completeness, but can also make a request take longer. Test the relevant page states and set timeouts appropriate to your own workflow. Vendor-displayed reliability figures, when present, describe that vendor’s stated measurement period and are not comparative benchmarks.
Cost and scale
For occasional manual use, a built-in browser feature may be enough. For application integration, compare per-month quotas, concurrency, bulk support, caching, and the cost of unsuccessful captures. ScreenshotNeo says only clean shots are billed and identifies verdict and billing status in response headers; its plans start with 1,000 free shots a month without a card. Other vendors’ quotas and prices should be verified on their current primary pages.

Common problems and fixes
The screenshot is missing images near the bottom
The page may load images lazily as the visitor scrolls. Try a tool with scroll-based loading support or configure incremental scrolling and a pause between steps; verify the full-page output afterward.
A banner or chat widget covers the page
Dismiss or hide the overlay if the tool allows it, or enable a cleanup feature. Confirm the result on the exact page because sites can render overlays differently across sessions.
The capture stops before the page ends
Check whether the service or browser has a maximum capture height, and whether the content is inside an independently scrolling element. Try capturing the relevant element or splitting the page into sections if your tool supports that.
The image is blank or shows an error screen
The page may have failed to load, timed out, or presented a bot check. Inspect the tool’s response status or verdict headers where available, and test the URL in a normal browser session. Do not treat an error-page image as a successful capture.
The screenshot differs between runs
Animations, changing content, consent state, and different wait conditions can produce different results. Use a consistent viewport and wait strategy, and test repeatedly on the target page before relying on automated output.
Which option should you choose?
- One quick capture: Use the full-page feature already available in Chrome or Firefox, after confirming its current interface.
- A single capture with a button: Consider a browser extension, but check its permissions, privacy, and current availability first.
- Application integration or repeat jobs: Compare hosted APIs against your needed output, page controls, quota, privacy requirements, and cost. ScreenshotNeo is the first API to try for clean shots and billing only on clean shots; ScreenshotOne documents detailed full-page controls, while Urlbox and Browserless warrant a current primary-source check.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these five options ranked by a controlled test?
No. The comparison is organized by workflow and documented capabilities; it does not claim hands-on testing or a controlled ranking.
Can I use an API to capture a page that requires login?
That depends on the service’s supported authentication options and the site’s access controls. Review the API documentation and privacy terms before sending credentials or capturing private pages.
