These tools solve related but different problems, and none guarantees a complete copy of every page or interaction.

How to choose a web archiving tool
Start by deciding whether you need to find a snapshot that already exists, record a page as you use it, crawl a site automatically, or maintain your own archive. Interactive replay and crawl coverage are separate measures: a crawler may collect many pages without preserving every interaction, while a carefully captured session may show one browsing path without covering the entire site.

What each tool does well
Wayback Machine: look for an existing public snapshot
When you need to inspect a page that may already have been archived, begin with the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. It is a lookup route, not a substitute for setting up your own capture or crawl. Current official feature details were not established for this comparison, so verify the service’s present access and capabilities directly.
Other names readers may encounter include Archive-It, Perma.cc, and archive.today. Their current features, prices, access rules, and formats are not compared here; check their official information before choosing one.
ArchiveWeb.page: capture the pages you visit
Webrecorder describes ArchiveWeb.page as a Chrome extension and standalone desktop app for archiving websites while browsing. Its product page lists version 0.17.1, released September 4, 2026, with downloads for macOS, Windows, and GNU/Linux. Captures are saved locally, remain private unless shared, can be viewed offline, and can be exported as WARC or WACZ. It can also upload sessions to an organization using Browsertrix to help patch automated crawls. See ArchiveWeb.page for current product details.
This approach suits content you can reach by navigating it yourself: open relevant pages, follow the important links, and capture the session. It is not the same as recursively crawling a whole site. Local capture also means you are responsible for where the files are stored and how they are backed up; an external drive is optional, and the capacity needed depends on what you collect.

Browsertrix: automate crawling and review
Browsertrix documents hosted automated crawling on Webrecorder infrastructure, along with import, export, and archive publishing. Developer documentation also describes self-hosting on your own infrastructure. Its archived items use WACZ and support interactive replay and review with quality-assurance tools. The documentation says WACZ items can move among Webrecorder tools and external systems that support WACZ. Consult the Browsertrix documentation for the current hosted and self-hosted workflows.
Automation is useful when manual navigation is impractical or you need a repeatable crawl. But a stopped or incomplete crawl contains only pages reached before it stopped. Check the job status and inspect coverage; do not treat a successful job label as proof that every page or interaction was preserved.
ArchiveBox: self-host a broad collection
ArchiveBox is open-source, self-hosted software for archiving public and private web content. Its project describes URL imports and scheduled imports from sources such as bookmarks or browser history. Available interfaces include a CLI, REST API, webhooks, browser extension, web interface, and filesystem access. Listed outputs include HTML, PNG, PDF, TXT, JSON, WARC, and SQLite. ArchiveBox offers local control and multiple representations, but self-hosting transfers installation, storage, access control, and ongoing preservation work to you or your organization. The project characterizes itself as general-purpose rather than the highest-fidelity or simplest option; it points to browser-driven Webrecorder tools for complex interactive pages and Browsertrix for more advanced recursive crawling. Treat that as the project’s own guidance, not an independent benchmark. Storage hardware is optional and should be sized for the material collected; one drive by itself is not a complete preservation plan.

WARC, WACZ, and replay portability
WARC is used by the Library of Congress and other organizations for web preservation; the Library’s resource also identifies WACZ as a format used by the Webrecorder project. That is a narrow institutional description, not a complete standards guide. Browsertrix documents that its WACZ archives can move to other tools that support WACZ. A file format alone does not guarantee that every viewer will replay every capture identically: compatibility depends on the viewer and the contents of the archive.
- Prefer documented export formats if you may change tools or infrastructure later.
- Confirm that your intended viewer accepts the format before relying on an export.
- Test a sample archive by opening it in the viewer you expect to use, especially before migrating a large collection.
Existing Conifer users should check the current Rhizome/Conifer notice or their collection dashboard before planning a migration. Rhizome’s December 15, 2025 announcement described options to keep hosting, download and self-host, transfer collections to Browsertrix, or delete collections. It said WACZ packaging included WARC data, curated bookmarks and descriptions, and full-text search indices, and stated that all collections would be available as WACZ in June 2026. That milestone has not been independently confirmed here. The announcement is at Rhizome’s Conifer update.
Why preserving pages matters—and what the evidence means
In a May 17, 2024 report, Pew Research Center found that 38% of webpages in its 2013 Common Crawl sample were no longer accessible when checked in 2023. Across its broader sample of about one million pages collected from 2013 through 2023, 25% were inaccessible as of October 2023. The measure focused on pages judged no longer to exist, using response and DNS evidence; it did not measure every kind of degraded content, content changes, accessibility, or whether any specific archive tool had captured a page. These figures explain the preservation problem, not the performance of any product. Read Pew Research Center’s report, “When Online Content Disappears”.
Capture and verify an important site
- Choose a scope. Decide whether you need a public historical snapshot, a browsed session, a recursive crawl, or a local collection. Record the pages and interactions that matter.
- Use the matching workflow. For a manual capture, browse the relevant pages in ArchiveWeb.page. For an automated crawl, configure Browsertrix and monitor its run. For an archive you operate yourself, install and configure ArchiveBox according to its current project instructions.
- Check what was actually captured. Replay important pages and follow key links. For a crawl, review its status and coverage; for a manual session, confirm that the important browsing path is represented.
- Keep a portable copy and plan stewardship. Export in a documented format where available, test it with a compatible viewer, and decide who controls storage, access, and backups.
Authentication, dynamic content, site restrictions, navigation choices, and crawl configuration can all affect results. Capture only material you are entitled to access and preserve; the tools’ documentation does not establish jurisdiction-specific permission to capture or republish copyrighted, personal, or login-restricted material.

Common problems and practical fixes
A capture opens, but the page is incomplete
Revisit the exact content in the browser and capture the relevant navigation path. For a crawl, inspect which pages were reached and whether the run stopped early. Dynamic or restricted content may not be available to the capture process.

A crawl stopped or reports failures
Use Browsertrix’s job status and review tools to distinguish stopped, failed, and completed processing. A stopped crawl only includes pages crawled up to that point; adjust the crawl and run it again if the missing coverage matters.
An exported archive will not replay in another viewer
Check that the viewer supports the archive’s format and test the file with a compatible WARC or WACZ tool. Portability is conditional on compatible software and valid archive contents.
A local archive is hard to maintain
Self-hosting requires an owner for upgrades, storage, access controls, and backups. If you do not want that operational responsibility, consider a hosted workflow; verify its present pricing, limits, and retention terms before moving important material.

Is a screenshot the same as a web archive?
No. A screenshot records a visual image or PDF. A web archive such as WARC or WACZ is intended to preserve web content for later replay in compatible tools; choose based on whether you need an image or a navigable record.
Can I guarantee that a website will look exactly the same later?
No tool can be assumed to capture every asset or interaction on every site. Replay and inspect important captures, and keep the original archive files and configuration information that you need for later use.
Which option is best if I want a private copy?
ArchiveWeb.page stores captures locally and keeps them private unless shared. ArchiveBox is self-hosted and gives you control over the system and storage, while requiring you to manage them. Choose based on whether your priority is a manually captured session or an ongoing local archive.
