If you want the current official PC release that revisits the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign, choose Halo: Campaign Evolved. If you specifically want the Anniversary edition and its switchable original-era graphics, get Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary through Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC). These are different releases—not the unchanged 2001 Windows game.
Choose the version that matches what you mean by “original Halo”
| What you want | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| A modern remake of the original campaign on PC | Halo: Campaign Evolved | Officially available on Windows PC and Steam; it rebuilds the campaign rather than reproducing the original PC executable. Halo’s out-now announcement |
| The Anniversary campaign, with a choice of remastered or original campaign graphics | Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary through MCC | The Steam content listing requires the MCC base game; Anniversary is not a self-contained Steam purchase. Steam listing |
| The standalone 2001-era Windows port | Availability not established | The current authorized storefront status of the original standalone PC port is unclear. Do not mistake it for Anniversary or Campaign Evolved. |
Play the modern remake: Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved is the most direct official option if you want the original story in a newly built PC release. Halo Support calls it a “modern remake” of Halo: Combat Evolved that preserves the original campaign experience. Halo Support release notes
Halo’s released-game announcement lists high-definition graphics, refined gameplay, enhanced cinematics, rebuilt sound, three additional prequel missions, Campaign Remix, and 42 Skulls. It also says the game supports cross-play co-op for up to four players. These details describe the released game and may change with updates. Official feature announcement
For installation planning, Halo Support lists a download size of 70 GB or less in its 2026 release notes. That is a download-size estimate, not a complete statement of PC hardware requirements; consult the live game listing and support information before installing.

- The Master Chief’s iconic journey includes six games, built for PC and collected in a single integrated experience where each game is delivered over time.
- Whether you’re a long-time fan or meeting Spartan 117 for the first time, The Master Chief Collection is the definitive Halo gaming experience.
Play the Anniversary version through MCC
Choose Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary if you want the earlier Anniversary presentation and the ability to compare its remastered visuals with the original campaign graphics. Steam describes the graphics toggle and identifies the content as requiring Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Buy or otherwise have access to MCC first; the Anniversary listing alone is not the complete game. Steam: Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
MCC is also a sensible fit if you want its broader collection rather than only a remake of the first campaign. For MCC’s current PC operating-system and component requirements, use Halo Support’s PC hardware specifications; avoid relying on old copied spec lists.

Playing co-op on PC
The versions do not share one universal co-op setup. Halo’s announcement for Campaign Evolved specifies cross-play co-op for up to four players. Halo Support also provides guidance for online play with a friend who has MCC, but that does not establish that every MCC mode or version has the same player count, or that PC supports local co-op. Check the instructions for the specific game and mode you plan to play. Halo Support: playing MCC with a friend
What about the original standalone PC release?
The original Windows port and the later Anniversary release are not interchangeable. The available information does not establish whether the standalone 2001-era port can currently be bought from an authorized storefront. If you want a supported official route, use Campaign Evolved for the remake or Anniversary through MCC; avoid treating unofficial browser builds or downloads as official releases.

Is the collector edition necessary to play?
No. The optional Campaign Evolved Collector’s Edition includes physical memorabilia, including a manual modeled on the original game’s manual, a SteelBook, a statue, a data-chip replica, and prints. Halo’s June 8, 2026 update reported the edition sold out; later resale stock is unknown and depends on region. These items are collectibles, not PC accessories or requirements.
