The right way to keep prerecorded video running on YouTube Live depends on where you want the ongoing work to happen: on a computer with streaming software, on dedicated encoder hardware, in a cloud service, or in a custom workflow built with YouTube’s API. For a no-code cloud option, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube while your computer is off; for a do-it-yourself setup, a local software encoder gives you direct control over playout.
Choose where the stream will run
An encoder takes video and sends it to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder software running on a computer as well as standalone hardware. It identifies OBS as free, open-source streaming software and lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. The choices below differ mainly in who operates the encoder and where it runs; available sources do not establish a comparative price or reliability ranking.
| Approach | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud service | Creators who want an always-on stream without keeping a dedicated computer running. | StreamNeo is #1 to try: it runs prerecorded YouTube streams from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. YouTube also lists Gyre as an example; current prices, uptime, and partner terms are not established here. |
| Computer software encoder | Creators comfortable managing local software and media playback. | YouTube identifies OBS as free and open-source. The computer and its network connection are part of the streaming setup. YouTube’s encoder guide does not specify a playlist-loop recipe or minimum computer requirements. |
| Dedicated encoder hardware | Workflows already built around standalone broadcast equipment. | YouTube recognizes hardware encoders and recommends professional-grade equipment for higher-production-value events, while noting that expensive equipment is not required to get started. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Developers building scheduled or multi-broadcast workflows. | The API supports a custom integration that can keep one continuous feed live while creating and completing separate broadcasts. It requires development work rather than a creator-facing no-code setup. |
Set up a local software encoder
This is the practical do-it-yourself route when you want local control over the playback and encoding workflow. YouTube’s guide explains the connection to an encoder, but does not prescribe how to create a looping playlist inside OBS or other software. Media-source setup and looping controls vary by application and operating system, so confirm the playback behavior in the software you choose before relying on it unattended.
- Check channel eligibility. Enable live streaming on a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete it before the planned start.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and open its stream settings. Choose the encoder workflow rather than mobile or webcam streaming.
- Configure prerecorded playback and encoding. In your streaming software, select the video or playlist source and configure it to repeat using that software’s available controls. YouTube’s instructions do not provide a universal loop setting. Confirm that both video and audio play as intended and that the source continues rather than ending after one pass.
- Connect the encoder. Copy YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Review stream settings. YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop options so an encoder can control when a stream starts and stops. These settings can be reused with stream settings. They are workflow controls, not a guarantee that the stream will remain uninterrupted.
- Preview, start, and monitor. Preview in YouTube Studio before going live. Once the encoder is sending content and the preview looks correct, start the stream. Monitor audio and video quality throughout the run rather than assuming the initial preview confirms everything will remain healthy.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans; UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Use dedicated hardware when it fits your workflow
A standalone hardware encoder is another way to send a prerecorded source to YouTube Live. It makes sense when your workflow already uses broadcast equipment or calls for a hardware-based encoding setup. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware for events with higher production value, but does not require expensive equipment for a basic start. The guidance reviewed does not specify a device model, price, or universal configuration for looping prerecorded video, so check the encoder manufacturer’s instructions for media playback and repeat behavior.
Build a custom workflow with the YouTube Live Streaming API
The API is for developers who need a programmed broadcast workflow, not simply a way to avoid leaving a computer on. It distinguishes an incoming liveStream resource from viewer-facing liveBroadcast resources. YouTube’s documented example keeps a 24/7 broadcast live while creating and completing a separate interview broadcast on the same incoming stream. This lets an integration manage distinct broadcasts without stopping the continuous feed. Plan for API integration and lifecycle management; this is not a no-code playlist setup.

Plan for keys, monitoring, and archives
Protect access to the stream
Treat the stream key as a credential. Store it only in the encoder or service that needs it, avoid sharing screenshots or configuration files containing it, and reset it in YouTube Studio if you think it has been exposed. After a reset, replace the old key wherever the encoder or service uses it.
Do not confuse DVR with an archive
YouTube’s DVR setting lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume during a live stream. Archiving is separate: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For an all-day continuous feed, do not assume the entire run will become one intact recording; plan how you will manage recordings and check YouTube’s current behavior for your stream.

Allow time for readiness and check the live preview
Initial live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Before a scheduled start, verify channel eligibility, confirm the selected stream and key, and check the preview for picture and sound. Once live, monitor the stream’s quality and status; auto-start and auto-stop do not replace monitoring.
Keep copyright and monetization separate
Only stream material you own or have the rights to use. YouTube identifies possible routes such as obtaining permission, relying on an applicable copyright exception, following Creative Commons terms, or using music from YouTube’s Audio Library or Creator Music. Copyright rules vary by jurisdiction, and none of those routes guarantees that a stream will avoid a claim or strike.

Permission to use content and eligibility to monetize it are different questions. In its July 15, 2025 policy update, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and said repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible under its existing monetization policies. Reused material may also be ineligible even with permission if it lacks meaningful original commentary, substantive modification, or viewer value. These policies apply to live streams as well as other video formats; owning or licensing footage alone does not establish monetization eligibility.
Pick the approach that matches who will operate it
- Choose a cloud service if you want the stream to continue without relying on a computer at home. StreamNeo is one option for uploaded-video streaming to YouTube; YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud example, but the cited listing does not establish its current price or reliability.
- Choose a software encoder if you want to manage local playback and encoding yourself and can keep the computer and network available for the stream.
- Choose hardware if a standalone encoder belongs in your existing production setup; the YouTube guidance does not make expensive hardware a prerequisite.
- Choose the API if you are a developer who needs programmatic scheduling or multiple broadcasts from a continuous incoming feed.
None of these platform capabilities establishes that a 24/7 prerecorded stream will grow an audience, increase watch time, or earn revenue. Treat those as outcomes to evaluate for your own channel, not guaranteed results of automation.
