For a simple setup, play a local playlist through OBS and send it to a YouTube Live event. You arrange the rotation before it reaches YouTube: create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, connect OBS with the event’s server URL and stream key, then check the preview before going live. If you want prerecorded videos to keep playing without a computer running at home, a cloud playout service is an alternative.

Choose how to keep the videos playing

The playlist or playout system sits between your video files and YouTube. YouTube receives an encoded live feed; it does not rotate a playlist of uploaded videos for you.

Method Best suited to Trade-off
StreamNeo Unattended YouTube playback of uploaded videos from the cloud. Uses a paid slot after the one free day; your videos must be uploaded to the service.
Local encoder such as OBS Creators who want direct control over playback and can leave a computer and internet connection running. Playback stops if the computer, encoder, or connection fails.
Another cloud playout service, such as Gyre Creators who want cloud-based continuous playback and are prepared to check the provider’s current terms and workflow. Current pricing, service limits, and uptime terms should be confirmed with the provider.
Dedicated hardware such as AJA HELO Plus Creators seeking an appliance-based way to schedule prerecorded media without a computer. Confirm current availability, compatibility, and cost with the vendor.

YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes OBS, Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams, and AJA HELO Plus, whose PlayToStream functionality supports scheduled prerecorded media. These are distinct approaches: OBS runs locally, while cloud software or hardware can reduce reliance on a personal computer. Each still depends on its own service or device and network working.

Set up a local playlist with OBS

  1. Enable YouTube Live if needed. If this is the first time enabling live streaming on your channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow time for that before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide has the current workflow.
  2. Create or schedule a live event. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one for later. Scheduling can create an event page viewers can share and use for reminders.
  3. Prepare the playlist in OBS. Add your prerecorded relaxation videos as the playback source or sources in your encoder setup, and arrange them in the intended order. Check that picture and audio continue cleanly where one file ends and the next begins. OBS interface labels and playlist controls can change, so check the current OBS documentation for the exact controls in your installed version.
  4. Connect OBS to the event. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event in YouTube Studio into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. Use the event’s own key and server details rather than assuming details from another broadcast will apply.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm that the expected video and audio appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s instructions say to select Go live after the preview appears.
  6. Monitor the broadcast. During long sessions, keep an eye on playback, the encoder, the internet connection, and YouTube’s stream health. A local setup requires the computer and playback process to stay available for the broadcast to continue.

Configure the rotation for a relaxing viewing experience

Plan the sequence as a viewer will encounter it, including when the playlist wraps back to its beginning. Use material you have the rights to stream, and check both ends of each transition: abrupt audio gaps, unexpected silence, or an unrelated opening slate can be especially noticeable in a continuous background stream. A short preview before launch helps catch ordering and audio-level problems.

There is no single ideal video length or rotation schedule established by YouTube for relaxation streams. Choose a sequence that suits the content and your audience, but do not treat repeated playback as a shortcut to monetization: YouTube reviews channel content under its originality and repetitive-content policies.

Plan for long broadcasts and replays

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a broadcast lasting more than 12 hours will be saved as a replay. If retaining an archive matters, plan a separate recording or archive workflow, or schedule shorter sessions with an appropriate restart plan. The YouTube Help guidance describes the archive behavior in its encoder setup guide.

YouTube distinguishes a broadcast, which is the viewer-facing event, from a stream, which represents the transmission settings and feed. The distinction matters for recurring operations: Google’s API guide gives an example of a 24/7 broadcast and says one stream resource can be bound to up to three live broadcasts. That is an API resource limit, not a requirement for a typical OBS setup. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects such material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. This applies to audio and video in a relaxation playlist, not just to other live broadcasts.

A license by itself may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, even when you have licensed the content. Before streaming music, ambient recordings, artwork, or video made by someone else, confirm that your permissions cover live YouTube use and ask the rights holder about allowlisting when applicable. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Understand the monetization risk of repetitive programming

YouTube’s channel monetization policy applies to live streams. Monetized content should be original and authentic; the policy says content should not be mass-produced, generic, or repetitive. Cycling a small set of nearly interchangeable visuals or audio may therefore create a monetization risk even if you own or licensed the files. Rights clearance and monetization eligibility are separate questions: having permission to use material does not by itself establish that a channel meets monetization policy.

Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and assess the originality and variety of the channel as a whole rather than relying on a single stream’s rights status.

Fix common problems

  • YouTube Live is not available yet: First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance rather than waiting until the planned start.
  • The event has no picture or audio in its preview: Check that OBS is sending the intended playback source, then confirm the event’s server URL and stream key are entered correctly.
  • The playlist stops when you leave: A local encoder depends on its computer and connection remaining available. Use a cloud or hardware playout option if you need playback without a home computer running.
  • The stream is interrupted after copyrighted material is detected: Check the rights for every video and audio track. If you have a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist.
  • You cannot find a replay after a very long stream: YouTube only states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a longer broadcast; use a separate archive plan.
  • Monetization is refused or at risk: Review the channel-wide policy for original and repetitive content. Permission to use media does not guarantee that repetitive programming is eligible.
