For a YouTube Live program made from several clips, normalize the source audio before you stream it. Measure perceived loudness across each complete clip, bring the clips toward a consistent level, control true peaks, and audition the joins. Matching peak levels alone will not make videos sound equally loud.
If you are a viewer listening to an existing YouTube playlist, first check the player’s Stable volume setting. It can reduce variation between quiet and loud parts on supported videos, but YouTube says it is not available for every video. It is a playback aid, not a reliable fix for every playlist or for the audio in a creator’s outgoing live stream.
Choose the workflow that matches your role
| Situation | Best starting point | When the adjustment happens |
|---|---|---|
| You are watching a playlist | Try YouTube’s Stable volume setting in the player. | On the listener’s playback side; availability varies by video. YouTube Help describes the feature as on by default for supported videos, but not available for all videos. |
| You are assembling clips for a live program | Measure and normalize the source clips before sequencing them, or use a consistent live audio-processing chain. | Before the stream reaches YouTube. FFmpeg documents its loudnorm filter for file and live-stream workflows. FFmpeg loudnorm documentation |
Stable volume is not an editing tool. YouTube’s support material discusses videos generally and does not establish that the feature behaves identically for an active live stream, its replay, and ordinary uploads.
How to make the clips in your live program sound more consistent
1. Measure whole clips with the same method
Use a loudness meter on each complete clip. Compare integrated loudness, which describes average perceived level over the measured program, and maximum true peak, which helps identify peaks that may become problematic during playback or encoding. Also consider loudness range when preserving the program’s dynamics matters. These are different descriptors; a peak-only comparison does not establish a loudness match.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
2. Apply one consistent normalization workflow
Process every clip using the same measurement and normalization approach, or apply processing consistently in the live audio chain if the sources are mixed in real time. FFmpeg’s loudnorm filter implements EBU R 128 loudness normalization and offers dynamic and linear modes. Its documentation describes single-pass processing for live streams and files, and two-pass processing for files. Consult the filter documentation for the exact options and mode behavior rather than assuming one setting suits every source.
Normalization can bring average levels closer, but it cannot make clips with very different compression, tonal balance, music density, or speech-to-music balance identical. Listen to the processed sequence, not just the meter readings.

3. Treat -23 LUFS as a broadcast reference, not a YouTube rule
EBU R 128 version 5.0, published in November 2023, recommends average programme loudness of -23 LUFS and the use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. The European Broadcasting Union’s guidance gives a ±1 LU tolerance for live programmes. Those figures belong to the EBU broadcast recommendation; they are not evidence of a universal YouTube target for every genre, channel, or playlist-style live program. 4. Audition every transition
Listen to the sequence from start to finish, including the ends and beginnings of adjacent clips. Check whether a change in level feels abrupt, whether speech remains intelligible, and whether transitions expose noise, silence, or a sudden change in dynamics. Equal integrated loudness does not guarantee identical perceived impact or smooth joins.
If you only want a YouTube playlist to play at a steadier volume
- Open a video in the playlist and select the player’s Settings menu.
- Look for Stable volume. YouTube says it is on by default for supported videos, but the option is not available on every video. YouTube Help: Stable volume
- If one item still sounds much louder or quieter, adjust playback volume for that item or use a playback setup with its own loudness processing. Stable volume is not guaranteed to cover every video or every live-stream context.
What YouTube’s live audio checks do—and do not do
YouTube Live’s API documentation covers stream transport and audio configuration, including codec, sample rate, channel count, and bitrate-related health issues. Meeting those requirements helps ensure the stream is configured correctly; it does not normalize the loudness of different clips for you. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

Or let it run in the cloud
If the clips are already prepared and your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube program playing, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not normalize audio, so prepare and audition your clips first.
