If the player is controlled by a library or hosted provider, change the source through that player’s documented API instead; changing a URL in the DOM alone may not update the playback engine.
Change the source on a native HTML video element
When the URL points directly to media the browser can play, assign it to the video element and call load():

video.src = nextUrl;
video.load();load() resets the media element and begins selecting or loading a resource from its src or child <source> elements. MDN describes it as generally useful after changing those sources dynamically: HTMLMediaElement.load().
If the video uses child source elements
Update the child elements, then call load() on their parent <video>. For example:

video.load();With multiple candidate files, update the relevant <source> elements before loading so the browser can choose from the revised set. The native Video.js component reference also distinguishes a single URL on src from candidate formats supplied as child <source> elements: Video.js player API.

Update a framework-managed player through its API
A React component or JavaScript player may own source state, playback-engine configuration, and the underlying media element. In that case, change the source input exposed by the component rather than modifying an internal URL that the library may overwrite or ignore.

Video.js React source objects
Video.js React treats a new source object as a replacement: if the next object leaves out a previously used type or engine option, that setting is no longer part of the new source configuration. Include the properties the selected source needs, or use the documented src property when only the URL should change while retaining the type and engine options. The library’s behavior is specific to Video.js React, not a rule for every player. See its documentation and repository.
HLS, DASH, and hosted video
Do not assume every player URL is a direct video file. HLS and DASH commonly use manifests handled by a playback engine, while services such as YouTube and Vimeo use provider-specific playback paths. ReactPlayer documents multiple backends, including native media, HLS, DASH, and hosted providers; its repository also describes version 3 source and track patterns that follow native <source> and <track> conventions. Check the major version installed in your application and follow its documentation: ReactPlayer repository. Vimeo playback should use the provider’s SDK where appropriate: Vimeo Player SDK.

Check playback behavior after switching
- For native video, call
load(). Updating a child<source>without loading the parent video leaves the source change unapplied to the element’s selection process. MDN - For library-managed playback, use the library’s source API. A framework can maintain state beyond the DOM property. Video.js React documentation
- Keep required source metadata. When replacing a Video.js React
sourceobject, retain any requiredtype,preferPlayback, or engine settings in the next object. Video.js React documentation - Confirm what kind of URL you have. A direct file, streaming manifest, and provider URL can require different playback routes. ReactPlayer repository
- Handle resume position and autoplay explicitly. The documented reload behavior does not guarantee that time position or autoplay will be preserved across players. Implement continuity only if your chosen player documents it.
What to expect when the source changes
Changing the source initiates a new resource-selection or playback path; it is not a universal promise that the new video will resume at the old timestamp or start automatically. If your interface should preserve a position, capture and restore it according to the behavior supported by the player you use. Autoplay is likewise a separate behavior to verify for that player and browser.
