Private Internet Access, NordVPN, Proton VPN and IVPN are four options with evidence of ad-blocking capability, but the available tests do not establish a single, apples-to-apples 2026 winner. Results vary by test, and a VPN’s built-in blocker is not a reliable substitute for a dedicated ad blocker on every site.
How the VPN ad-blocking tests compare
The percentages below come from different publishers and methods. They are evidence about each publisher’s test, not scores on one shared scale. Top10VPN’s publication date is not stated in the retrieved material; Tom’s Guide’s table does not establish its test date. Security.org identifies its review as a 2026 guide.

Top10VPN says it tested 16 VPN blockers using an ad-block checker and also considered manual website results and supported operating systems or browsers. Its PIA overview and detailed analysis report figures in different contexts; they should not be combined into one score. Tom’s Guide cautions that its results are not scientific or comprehensive enough to represent the full picture and advises against relying solely on a built-in tool.

Private Internet Access MACE: a strong result in one comparison
Top10VPN names MACE its top overall VPN ad blocker, based on its comparison’s combined criteria rather than a universal percentage leaderboard. Tom’s Guide reports a lower ad-blocking result in its own table. Those findings are not necessarily contradictory: the publishers used different tests, and the Tom’s Guide table’s test date is not established.

NordVPN Threat Protection: check the feature and plan details
NordVPN’s ad and tracker controls are discussed under Threat Protection, while Tom’s Guide describes Threat Protection Pro as desktop-only and available on Plus or higher plans. Treat that as the review’s stated availability, not a guarantee of current naming or plan terms; check NordVPN’s current support information and subscription details before choosing. Its results also vary substantially between the two cited test publishers.
Proton VPN NetShield: filtering tied to DNS requests
Proton describes NetShield as DNS filtering: its DNS server checks requested website and app domains against lists associated with ads, trackers and malware, then blocks flagged resources. Users can select malware-only filtering or a setting that also blocks ads and trackers. Proton lists NetShield for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS/iPadOS on paid plans.

Security.org’s 2026 review says its team tested VPNs for nine months across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, connecting to servers in dozens of countries. It reports that NetShield blocked over 90% of ads, including pop-up, banner and video ads, but did not block YouTube ads. Security.org also says NetShield requires an active Proton VPN connection. Proton’s February 2026 claim that an update made the feature “six times more powerful” is Proton’s own characterization, not an independent test result.
IVPN: a tested alternative with less detail in the available comparisons
Top10VPN reports that IVPN blocked more than 90% of ads and trackers in its comparison. The cited material does not provide a comparable IVPN score from Tom’s Guide or Security.org, or enough feature and device detail to assess its availability against the other options here. Consider that test result as one data point, not a complete product comparison.
Do VPNs actually block ads on YouTube, Spotify and other sites?
Sometimes, but domain filtering has important limits. Top10VPN’s manual testing found that none of its tested VPN blockers worked across all four popular sites it checked; PIA and NordVPN worked on three of the four. It also found uneven results on Twitch and Spotify, and noted that YouTube pre-roll ads may remain even when a blocker removes banner ads.
Ads or promotions served as part of a site’s own content are harder for a domain-based blocker to distinguish from the content you requested. Top10VPN says VPN blockers cannot remove Spotify Premium ads or Facebook sponsored posts, and may miss embedded ads. A blocked advertising domain therefore does not mean every ad format on every platform will disappear.
What built-in VPN blockers do—and do not—protect against
Ad and tracker filtering usually acts on requests to known domains. It can reduce some advertising, tracking and, depending on the product and setting, requests associated with malware. That is different from removing every ad within a webpage, blocking all forms of tracking, or providing full antivirus protection.

Keep the test categories separate. Tom’s Guide lists ad-, tracker- and malware-blocking results separately. NordVPN’s Threat Protection Pro has also been discussed in connection with malicious-download protection; malware protection is not an ad-blocking score. Likewise, an overall VPN performance ranking cannot establish how well its ad blocker works. Artifact Security’s 2026 test assessed factors such as throughput, stability, latency, connection time, leak protection, site accessibility and feature reliability—not ad removal.
Do you still need a separate ad blocker?
For more consistent blocking across sites and browsers, it is sensible to keep a dedicated ad blocker available. A VPN filter can be a useful extra layer, especially for requests to known ad or tracker domains, but test results and real-site behavior show why it should not be your only tool. Top10VPN’s testing guide reaches the same practical conclusion: “You still need an ad blocker even if your VPN includes one.”

Can a VPN router block ads across your home network?
A router configured to run a VPN can extend VPN coverage to devices that do not have a convenient VPN app. It is not, by itself, proof that a provider’s ad filtering will work across the network. Router support depends on compatible firmware and VPN protocols, and the cited guidance warns that many ISP routers do not support VPN configuration. Confirm that the exact router, firmware and VPN setup support the filtering feature you want before treating it as a whole-network ad-blocking solution.
