There is no single best VPN for every Windows user. For an everyday Windows 11 choice, NordVPN is a strong candidate in Gizmodo’s September 2026 test; Proton VPN is a privacy-led option with a free tier; ExpressVPN is noted for an easy-to-use app; and Private Internet Access offers extensive controls for users who want to customize settings. The right pick depends on your priorities, Windows device, and the full subscription cost.
The available comparisons support five named services, not a well-evidenced ranking of seven. The picks below distinguish what the sources establish from what they do not, rather than inventing a seventh-place winner.
How to choose a VPN for Windows
Start with what matters most: privacy evidence, a straightforward Windows app, tested performance, streaming, device limits, or cost. Then confirm that the provider supports your Windows version and your PC’s processor architecture. A service’s Windows app is not the same thing as Windows’ built-in VPN configuration: Microsoft documents profile and auto-trigger options for managed deployments, but that does not mean every consumer VPN app offers them.

Security.org describes evaluating installation, interface responsiveness, feature access, and background resource use on Windows 10 and 11. Their findings are useful for comparison, but they are not one shared benchmark.

Windows VPN picks
NordVPN: broad everyday use
Gizmodo ranked NordVPN first overall in its September 2026 Windows 11 round. It recorded a 7.8% average speed loss across three tested locations and access to 14 of 14 streaming platforms in its test set. Disney+ required a browser extension with location spoofing in that round, so the result should not be read as a guarantee of effortless access to every service.
Gizmodo’s same test reported a high UK ping and a connection issue when another VPN client was installed but idle. Those are observations from that test setup, not evidence of universal behavior. For context, Gizmodo’s no-VPN baseline on its Windows 11 desktop over Ethernet was 190.36 Mbps download, 19.37 Mbps upload, and 10 ms ping; those are baseline measurements from that setup, not general speed expectations.

- Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1

Proton VPN: privacy focus and a free tier
Security.org identifies Proton VPN as its Windows privacy pick. Proton VPN also has a free tier, but it is not equivalent to the paid offering: Tom’s Guide describes the free plan as having unlimited bandwidth but a limited choice of locations and no streaming support in the review it examined. Gizmodo opened 10 of 14 platforms with Proton VPN in its own test set. Treat that as a result from its method, not a promise of access.
ExpressVPN: an app noted for simplicity
TechRadar characterized ExpressVPN’s app as especially easy to use. Gizmodo measured a 7.8% average speed loss over three locations in its September 2026 Windows 11 test. That is a different kind of evidence from an app-usability assessment, and neither result guarantees the same experience on another connection or PC.
Rank #3
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Private Internet Access: extensive controls
Private Internet Access appears in both Security.org’s and Gizmodo’s Windows shortlists. Tom’s Guide describes extensive controls, support for Windows 10 and 11, unlimited simultaneous connections, and a beta Windows ARM app. Check the current app status and plan terms before choosing it, particularly if you use an ARM-based PC.
IPVanish: included in Security.org’s Windows shortlist
Security.org includes IPVanish among the six providers in its Windows comparison. The reviewed material does not establish a distinctive advantage or enough comparable Windows-specific detail to assign it a stronger use case here. Consider it only after checking current Windows compatibility, privacy information, and subscription terms directly.

What the speed and streaming figures mean
Gizmodo’s September 2026 Windows 11 round found a 7.8% average speed loss for both NordVPN and ExpressVPN across three tested locations. Because each result comes from a specific test setup, it should not be treated as a guarantee of performance on another connection or PC.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Streaming results are similarly limited to the platforms and method in that particular round: Gizmodo recorded 14 of 14 for NordVPN and 10 of 14 for Proton VPN. These figures do not establish universal access, availability in every country, or results on every device. A VPN changes how traffic is routed and can help protect traffic on a connection; it does not promise anonymity or guaranteed streaming access.

Check Windows compatibility before paying
- Windows version: Confirm support for your installed version; the cited provider information includes Windows 10 and 11 support for Private Internet Access.
- Processor architecture: If your PC uses an ARM processor, check whether the provider offers a supported ARM app rather than assuming an x64 app will work. Tom’s Guide describes a beta Windows ARM app for Private Internet Access.
- App versus Windows features: Microsoft’s VPN configuration guidance covers managed Windows profiles, including auto-trigger settings. It does not establish that consumer VPN apps expose all of those settings.
Microsoft’s guidance says a VPN profile can be configured to connect automatically by app or name, to be “always on,” and not to trigger on trusted networks. The options are documented in an organizational configuration context, through VPNv2 CSP and Microsoft Intune; Microsoft’s guide does not explain VPN server deployment. Read Microsoft’s VPNv2 CSP guidance.
Compare the full price, not just the monthly equivalent
Promotional monthly figures can depend on a long prepaid term, and an introductory price is not a guaranteed renewal rate. TechRadar’s October 7, 2026 update listed ExpressVPN at $2.99 per month on a two-year plan. These are dated offer figures, not stable list prices.
Before subscribing, compare the amount charged upfront, the length of the initial term, and the renewal amount and cadence. Confirm the current offer for your region on the provider’s checkout page: the cited figures may change and do not establish what a customer will pay at renewal.

What to verify before you subscribe
- Choose your priority—privacy, simplicity, configurable settings, streaming, or price—and shortlist accordingly.
- Check the provider’s current Windows app support for your version and processor architecture.
- Read the privacy policy and look for current independent audit information; do not treat a reviewer’s recommendation as a substitute for checking the provider’s terms.
- Compare the total upfront payment and renewal terms, not just the advertised monthly equivalent.
- If streaming is essential, confirm current availability for the specific service and region. Test results from a review do not guarantee access.
