RTINGS names Windscribe its best tested torrenting VPN and also recommends Proton VPN; TechRadar favors ExpressVPN and considers NordVPN and Private Internet Access. Those lists reflect different review criteria, not a shared ranking. Choose based on the provider’s current P2P rules, privacy evidence, kill-switch behavior, torrent-client binding, port forwarding, and the way you use P2P.
This guide compares those recommendations for lawful BitTorrent and other P2P file sharing. BitTorrent has legitimate uses, but downloading or sharing copyrighted material without authorization can have legal consequences that vary by jurisdiction. A VPN can change the IP address peers see and limit what your ISP can observe about traffic inside the tunnel; it does not make infringement lawful or guarantee anonymity.
What is the best VPN for torrenting?
The best fit depends on what you need from a torrenting VPN. If you value port forwarding and RTINGS’ testing approach, consider its Windscribe recommendation. If you want P2P guidance and features documented by the provider, Proton VPN is another candidate. TechRadar’s top choice is ExpressVPN, with NordVPN and Private Internet Access among its alternatives. These are publication-specific recommendations, not directly comparable results from one shared test.
RTINGS describes its approach and recommendations in its torrenting VPN review. TechRadar’s picks and reasoning are in its torrenting VPN guide. Tom’s Guide also emphasizes its own hands-on testing in its torrenting VPN coverage. Treat these as separate editorial assessments: the sources do not establish one objectively fastest VPN across comparable, controlled P2P tests.

How the shortlisted services differ
| VPN | What the cited coverage says | What to check before subscribing |
|---|---|---|
| Windscribe | RTINGS names it its best tested torrenting VPN, citing P2P support, kill-switch behavior, and port forwarding. RTINGS also notes limitations involving the free plan and annual billing. | RTINGS says its reviewed free plan does not support torrenting. Confirm current P2P eligibility, port-forwarding availability, billing terms, and supported apps in Windscribe’s own current terms; those provider terms are not established here. |
| Proton VPN | RTINGS lists it as a feature-rich alternative. Proton’s documentation covers P2P servers, a kill switch, port forwarding, and torrent-client binding. | Proton says its free plan does not include dedicated P2P servers. Check the current plan and server requirements, and make sure your device and client support the setup you want. |
| ExpressVPN | TechRadar names it its current top option and reports broad P2P server coverage and privacy features. | Those coverage claims are TechRadar’s assessment. Verify current P2P rules, app safeguards, and plan details directly with ExpressVPN. |
| NordVPN | TechRadar discusses it as an alternative, highlighting privacy and leak protections. | Confirm its current P2P server scope and app behavior for your platform. It is not on RTINGS’ separately ranked shortlist cited here. |
| Private Internet Access | TechRadar discusses it as an alternative and highlights port forwarding. | Check whether port forwarding is available for your chosen plan, app, and location. It is not on RTINGS’ separately ranked shortlist cited here. |
The comparison does not establish current prices, recurring billing amounts, or identical test conditions for these services. Confirm the price, billing term, regional availability, and P2P terms at checkout rather than treating a review ranking as a substitute for current provider details.
How to choose a VPN for P2P
Use the following criteria in roughly this order. A provider’s product page or help center should answer the operational questions; independent reviews can add evidence about how features performed in their own tests.

- 【VPN CASCADING AT EASE】Surpassing the mediocre performance of most VPN routers for home usage, the Beryl AX is capable of hosting a VPN server and VPN client at the same time within the same device, enabling users to remote access local network resources like Wi-Fi printers or local web servers, and accessing the public internet as a VPN client simultaneously.
- P2P rules and server scope: Confirm that torrenting is permitted on the plan you intend to use. Some providers restrict P2P to particular servers or locations, so connect only to an endpoint the provider explicitly allows.
- Privacy evidence: Read the logging policy and look for independent audits or other supporting evidence. A no-logs claim is not proof of complete anonymity, and no provider can be described as impossible to compel based on the cited reviews.
- Kill switch and leak behavior: Check whether the app can block internet traffic when the VPN tunnel drops, and whether reviewers have tested that behavior. A feature claim is not a guarantee that every device, app, or configuration will behave flawlessly.
- Torrent-client binding: If your client supports it, binding the client to the VPN network interface can prevent it from sending traffic over a regular connection when the VPN interface is unavailable. This is a separate safeguard from the VPN app’s kill switch.
- Port forwarding: This can improve incoming peer reachability, particularly for less popular torrents or when other peers also have connectivity restrictions. It does not guarantee more speed, and it matters less for casual downloads with plenty of reachable peers.
- P2P-specific performance and stability: Prefer measurements that state the reviewer, test setup, date, and conditions. The cited coverage does not provide a comparable cross-provider benchmark, so it cannot identify a universal speed winner.
- Practical fit: Compare current plan limits, device and app support, setup difficulty, and billing terms. A feature is useful only if it is available on the plan and platform you will actually use.
Do I need port forwarding for torrenting?
Usually, no: many users can download popular torrents without configuring it. Port forwarding can allow direct incoming connections and help make a client reachable to more peers. Proton describes those benefits in its port-forwarding guidance; RTINGS notes that lacking it can limit connections to peers without open ports.
Consider it more important if you regularly use low-seed torrents, need incoming peer connections, or find that reachability is a bottleneck. For common torrents with abundant peers, it may make little practical difference. Neither source supports a fixed speed improvement, and port-forwarding availability can depend on the provider, plan, server, and app.

Will my real IP show in a torrent swarm?
When your torrent client is correctly sending traffic through an active VPN tunnel, peers generally see the VPN endpoint’s IP address rather than your home connection’s public IP. But a disconnected tunnel, a client using the wrong network interface, or another configuration problem can expose traffic outside the VPN.
Proton’s BitTorrent setup guide explains how to bind qBittorrent and Vuze to the VPN interface and warns that selecting the regular internet interface can expose your real IP even if the VPN kill switch is enabled. Interface names can vary by operating system and VPN protocol, so verify the selection after changing either.

To deal with this situation, please reconnect your router to the wifi.)
How to set up a torrent client to use the VPN
- Check P2P permission. Read the provider’s current policy and choose a server or location explicitly permitted for P2P.
- Connect the VPN. Confirm that the app reports an active connection before opening or resuming transfers.
- Enable the kill switch. Turn on the provider app’s setting intended to block internet traffic if the VPN connection is interrupted. Proton says its kill switch blocks traffic during an interruption; test the behavior on your own device instead of treating that claim as a guarantee for every configuration.
- Bind the torrent client, if supported. In the client’s network or advanced settings, select the VPN network interface rather than the regular internet interface. Proton documents binding for qBittorrent and Vuze; consult the client’s own documentation for its current labels and steps.
- Recheck after changes. If you change VPN protocols, reconnect, or update the operating system, confirm the selected interface still corresponds to the VPN. Proton notes that the interface label can vary by protocol and operating system.
- Test before relying on it. Check the VPN connection and client configuration before starting a transfer. If the connection drops, pause transfers and restore the VPN before resuming.
What should I do if the VPN disconnects?
Stop the transfer first. A kill switch is intended to block traffic during a tunnel interruption, but it should not be your only protection: client-level binding and correct interface selection address a different failure path.
- Pause active torrents or close the client.
- Reconnect the VPN to a provider-approved P2P server and verify that the app shows an active tunnel.
- Check that the kill switch remains enabled.
- Confirm that the torrent client is bound to the VPN interface, not the regular internet connection. Recheck this if you changed the VPN protocol or network.
- Resume only after the connection and client settings are correct. If the problem repeats, leave transfers paused while you troubleshoot the provider app or client configuration.
Why VPN rankings disagree
Reviewers can weigh different features, use different testing methods, and judge convenience or privacy evidence differently. RTINGS’ Windscribe and Proton VPN recommendations therefore do not conflict mechanically with TechRadar’s preference for ExpressVPN; each is an editorial conclusion under its own criteria. Tom’s Guide likewise describes its own hands-on testing. None of the cited coverage establishes a controlled, like-for-like speed comparison across all five services, so choose by the features and evidence relevant to your use rather than treating a ranking as a universal verdict.
