There is no evidence here to name one VPN the definitive best for every freelancer. A VPN is most useful when you connect through Wi-Fi you do not control, such as at a café, hotel, or coworking space. It encrypts traffic between your device and a VPN server, but it does not secure a compromised device or make you anonymous. Choose by checking the provider’s audit scope, technical safeguards, device support, work-tool compatibility, and the current price and renewal terms for your country.
When a VPN helps freelancers
A VPN creates an encrypted connection from your device to a VPN server. This can reduce what a local network operator or internet service provider can see about your connection, shifting some trust to the VPN provider. That makes it a useful layer when using public or shared wireless networks you do not control.
CISA’s wireless-security guidance recommends using a VPN when one is available for public wireless access. If you cannot establish a secure VPN connection, avoid sensitive activity on an untrusted network when possible. A VPN is not a replacement for HTTPS, strong account security, current software, or a client’s required security controls.
Examples of useful situations
- Working from café, hotel, airport, or coworking Wi-Fi.
- Connecting through a network whose operator or security settings you cannot verify.
- Reducing exposure of connection metadata to the local network, subject to the VPN provider’s policy and infrastructure.
What a VPN cannot do
A VPN does not make you anonymous. Websites can still identify a signed-in account, use cookies, or recognize other browser signals. It also cannot remove malware, protect files on an infected device, or stop monitoring software installed on a laptop controlled by an employer or client.

For client files, pair a VPN with device encryption and updates, secure file-sharing settings, multifactor authentication, and the client’s own policies. A VPN protects a network connection in transit to the VPN server; it does not guarantee that every copy of a file, endpoint, or account is safe.
How to compare VPNs for remote work
Check audit claims rather than the slogan
Look for who conducted an independent review, when it happened, which systems and processes it covered, and whether the report can be read. “No logs” is a policy claim, not proof by itself. Audits have a defined scope and date; they do not establish that no data is ever retained for billing, support, or other purposes.

Proton VPN’s article, updated June 16, 2026, says the company passed its fifth consecutive annual third-party no-logs audit and identifies Securitum as the auditor for the latest review. The company quotes the report: “The technical evidence reviewed during the engagement did not indicate that the examined Proton VPN server infrastructure logs users’ browsing activity, DNS queries, destination services, network traffic contents or user-identifiable connection metadata.” The qualifier matters: the finding concerns the infrastructure examined in that engagement.
