The best volumizing brush dryer is the one whose heat settings, brush shape, attachments and preparation steps fit your hair and styling routine—not simply the one marketed for every hair type. For fine or fragile hair, look for a model with a low or cool option; for thick or curly hair, check that its instructions offer suitable higher settings and whether they recommend rough-drying first. Match an oval or round barrel to your intended style, then verify the exact model’s voltage and warranty.
How to choose a volumizing brush dryer
Compare tools on five practical points: heat choices, barrel shape and size, attachments and modes, required preparation, and electrical compatibility. Product makers’ hair-type directions are model-specific, not universal rules about what heat every person should use.
- Heat: Check the actual settings and the maker’s guidance for the exact model. A cool setting or cool shot can be useful when you want less heat or to set a style.
- Shape and diameter: Oval barrels are marketed for volume and smoothing; smaller round brushes can be easier to use for shorter styles, bangs, body or a loose bend.
- Attachments and modes: A fixed head keeps the tool simple; a detachable head or several attachments offer more options but may add steps and storage needs.
- Preparation: See whether the instructions expect towel-dried hair, detangling, sectioning or rough-drying before styling.
- Electrical fit: Confirm voltage and plug compatibility for your location, especially if buying for travel. Do not assume two products in the same product family share the same specifications.
Which brush shape suits your style?
Oval barrels for lift and a smoother blowout
REVLON describes the 2.4-inch oval head on its One-Step Volumizer PLUS as a volume-focused design. Drybar likewise markets its 2.4-inch oval Double Shot barrel for volume and a slight bend. These are product descriptions, not independent comparisons proving that an oval brush will give every user more lift.

Round barrels for body, shorter styles and bangs
A smaller round barrel may be a more manageable choice for shorter hair, bangs or looser waves. Drybar describes its 2.25-inch Single Shot round brush as intended for body, waves, shorter styles and bangs. Choose diameter according to hair length and the finish you want; neither shape is best for everyone.

Heat settings for fine, thick and curly hair
Follow the instructions for your model and adjust to your own hair. The manufacturers below give different setting guidance, so do not transfer one tool’s recommendations to another.
- Fine or fragile hair: Conair’s InfinitiPRO Knot Dr. BC120 manual maps cool to fragile or fine-thin hair. The Curl Collective 3 in 1 Blowout Kit manual gives similar guidance. REVLON’s VersaStyler instructions say to begin on low and increase gradually as needed.
- Medium or normal hair: The BC120 and Curl Collective manuals map low to medium or normal hair.
- Thick, coarse or curly hair: The BC120 and Curl Collective manuals map high to wavy, curly or coarse-thick hair. REVLON’s VersaStyler directions say to use slow, steady passes and, for curly or thick hair, repeat three to four times. These are maker instructions, not a guarantee of results or a rule for all hair.
More heat is not automatically better. REVLON says damage may vary with hair condition for the VersaStyler, while Conair makes the same qualification for DigitalAire. Their stated maximum temperatures—212°F for the VersaStyler and 255°F for DigitalAire—are manufacturer specifications, not independent measures of styling effectiveness or safety.

Prepare hair before using the brush
Brush dryers work on damp hair, but the reviewed instructions do not all call for the same starting point. Detangle and section hair as directed by your tool’s manual, and use heat protectant when its instructions recommend it.
- Start with the manual’s specified hair condition. REVLON’s VersaStyler directions say to rough-dry to about 80% before using blowout mode.
- Work in sections. VersaStyler instructions specify 2–3-inch sections. Smaller, manageable sections can make it easier to guide the brush through your hair.
- Consider a separate rough-dry for thick or long hair. Drybar specifically recommends rough-drying extra thick or long hair with a regular dryer before using the Double Shot.
- Use the model’s stated motion and pass guidance. VersaStyler instructions call for slow, steady motion and say to repeat three to four times for curly or thick hair. Do not treat that instruction as advice for other models.
Check voltage, warranty and safety for the exact model
Voltage and warranty details can differ even among products with similar names. The original REVLON Salon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer is specified for 120V US outlets only; its manufacturer warns against voltage converters, lists a fixed, non-detachable head and states a four-year limited warranty. Those details do not automatically apply to the PLUS or another REVLON variant. Original REVLON One-Step product page

- Closer-to-root styling: The smaller 2.4 in oval barrel offers added control for root lift, soft waves, flips, and curls
- Best for shorter lengths: Choose Volumizer Plus for chin length to mid-length hair or when you want more precision than a 2.8 in barrel
- 6 heat settings: Select Cool, Low, Medium, or High for more styling control across drying, shaping, and refreshing
- Detachable for storage: Remove the brush head for compact storage and easier packing; the detachable design also enables dryer use
- Detangle and smooth: Charcoal-infused pins and tufted bristles help detangle, grip, and guide hair while creating a polished finish
- Check the appliance label and manual for voltage and plug requirements before use, particularly when traveling.
- Keep air-intake openings clear and follow the manual’s cleaning directions. The BC120 manual describes an automatic safety device for overheating, but that feature should not be assumed for other tools.
- Do not use a tool with a damaged cord. Stop and refer to the manufacturer’s instructions if the tool overheats or behaves unexpectedly.
- The Curl Collective manual says not to use that kit on hair extensions.
What the product claims do—and do not—establish
Manufacturer pages and manuals can establish stated features, operating instructions and the maker’s claims. They do not establish how products perform against one another in an independent head-to-head test. REVLON’s PLUS page claims 75% shinier blowouts and 50% less heat exposure; Conair lists DigitalAire’s maximum temperature as 255°F. Treat these as claims or specifications from the brands, not proof that a tool prevents damage or will produce the same result on every head of hair.
