Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a 1080p YouTube Live stream, start with 10 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps when encoding H.264. Set constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio; use RTMPS if your VLC build supports it. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder targets, not a guarantee that a particular computer, VLC version, or internet connection can sustain them.
Recommended VLC and YouTube settings for 1080p
Choose the frame rate that matches your source and that your computer and upload connection can reliably handle. YouTube’s current H.264 guidance distinguishes 1080p30 from 1080p60:
| Output | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps | For footage created at 30 fps or less demanding motion. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps | For a 60 fps source with motion that benefits from smoother playback, provided the encoder and connection can sustain it. |
The minimums are platform figures, not recommended targets. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. For audio, use AAC or MP3; YouTube’s stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Other encoder targets
- Video: H.264, progressive scan and square pixels.
- Keyframes: 2-second interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Advanced H.264 guidance: two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC.
- SDR color: Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
- Audio: AAC or MP3; for stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations. VLC’s available controls and whether its output can meet each target depend on its installed build and platform.

Choose 30 fps or 60 fps
Use the frame rate of the source where possible. A 60 fps output can preserve smoother motion in suitable footage, but it needs more bitrate than YouTube’s 30 fps recommendation and increases encoding demand. Do not select 60 fps just because the option is available: the computer must encode consistently, and the upload connection must have enough capacity for the outgoing stream.
Before going live, test with representative movement and audio. Run an upload-speed test and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test is running. A stable result matters more than selecting the larger bitrate number.

Connect VLC to the YouTube Live ingest
- Get the current ingest details from YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the primary ingestion URL and stream name shown for the stream. Exact UI labels may vary. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in screenshots.
- Check the format VLC expects. Some encoders use separate URL and stream-name fields; others require a combined destination in the form
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Use the current values supplied by YouTube, and do not assume every VLC build uses the same field layout. See the YouTube Live Streams API documentation. - Select the protocol supported by the output. Prefer RTMPS when VLC’s installed output supports it. RTMPS encrypts video, audio and control data in transit; RTMP does not. YouTube’s protocol guide describes RTMP and RTMPS as suitable for normal, low or ultra-low latency ingest. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.
- Set the encoder values. Use H.264, the bitrate for your chosen 1080p frame rate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval where VLC exposes those controls. Configure audio as AAC or MP3, with stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps if available.
- Send a private or unlisted test. Check the YouTube preview for picture, motion and sound, then inspect stream health before using the configuration for a public event.
Why VLC instructions vary by version
There is no universal VLC menu path that can be guaranteed for all platforms and builds. VLC’s official 3.0 documentation describes selecting FFmpeg in stream output and using FFmpeg AMF hardware encoders for network streaming or transcoding. That documentation also warns that VLC 4.0 nightly builds may be unstable and says AMF was not backported to VLC 3.x for the described workflow. Those notes apply to that specific encoder workflow, not to every VLC installation or a complete YouTube recipe. Consult the documentation for your build and verify the actual output with a test stream: VLC 3.0 streaming output documentation.
Troubleshoot a test stream
VLC does not connect to YouTube
- Confirm the ingestion URL and stream name are the current values displayed by YouTube.
- Check whether VLC expects the URL and stream name in separate fields or as a combined destination,
STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. - Verify that the selected output supports the protocol you chose, especially if you are trying RTMPS.
Video arrives, but YouTube reports poor stream health
- Compare the actual frame rate and bitrate with the recommendation for your chosen 1080p mode.
- If the encoder or network cannot sustain the target, lower the bitrate or use 30 fps rather than continuing with an unstable 60 fps stream.
- Check YouTube’s health messages for issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch or absent audio.
Picture is present but audio is missing
- Confirm that VLC is sending an audio track and that an AAC or MP3 encoder is selected.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages during the test, rather than relying only on VLC’s local playback.
Motion looks uneven or the stream drops frames
- Check that the source and outgoing frame rates match your intended mode.
- Reduce the encoding load by choosing 30 fps if the computer cannot encode the 60 fps stream reliably.
- Recheck upload capacity and bitrate; a platform minimum does not ensure a clean result on a constrained connection.
Copyright and YouTube rules still apply
Using VLC or a private test does not grant rights to the video or audio you stream. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s current policies before streaming. A technically healthy stream does not establish that its content is eligible for monetization or compliant with platform rules.
