Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBest overall depends on your setup: NVIDIA Broadcast is a strong no-green-screen choice for compatible Windows PCs with supported RTX hardware; OBS Studio is the flexible free choice, especially if you have a physical green screen; and XSplit Broadcaster integrates background removal into a Windows production app. There is no established apples-to-apples test proving which produces the cleanest cutout or uses the least hardware, so test the option on your own camera and system before committing.
Which virtual green screen software should you choose?
| Software | Best fit | Background method | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA Broadcast | Windows users with supported RTX hardware who want background removal without a physical screen | AI background removal, replacement, or blur; processed output is available as a virtual camera | Requires compatible NVIDIA hardware and Windows; check NVIDIA’s current requirements before installing |
| OBS Studio | Streamers who want a free, cross-platform production hub, particularly with a green screen | Built-in Chroma Key filter for a physical screen; a third-party plugin is an option for no-screen removal | The no-screen plugin is a community add-on, not part of OBS Studio |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Windows users who want production tools and automatic background removal in one app | VCam-based automatic removal, Chroma Key, and Color Key | Free-plan limits include watermarks in specified cases, four scenes, and personal-use restrictions |
These are different workflows, not a verified quality ranking. The reviewed product descriptions do not establish a winner for edge quality or performance cost. XSplit says higher automatic-removal quality settings use more hardware resources; test your own lighting, movement, camera framing, and system load.
How to decide
- You have a compatible RTX PC and use Windows: try NVIDIA Broadcast first if you want a virtual camera with no physical screen.
- You own or plan to use a green screen: OBS’s native Chroma Key filter is a straightforward, free option across Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- You want no-screen removal in an OBS workflow: consider the OBS Background Removal plugin, but verify its current release supports your OBS version and operating system.
- You want an integrated Windows production app: evaluate XSplit Broadcaster and its available removal modes, while checking which plan restrictions apply to your use.
Do you need a physical green screen?
No. A physical screen is needed for traditional chroma key, which removes a chosen color. NVIDIA Broadcast and XSplit’s automatic removal are designed to separate the subject from the background without one. Software segmentation avoids buying and lighting a backdrop, but compatibility and system load matter.
If you choose OBS chroma key, a green screen backdrop gives the filter a consistent color to remove. It is an optional part of that method, not a requirement for the no-screen tools.

Set up OBS with a physical green screen
- Add your camera: In OBS Studio, add your webcam as a source in the scene you plan to use.
- Open its filters: Right-click the camera source and choose Filters.
- Add the key: Under Effect Filters, add Chroma Key. OBS documents controls for similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction.
- Choose the screen color: Select the color matching your backdrop. Green is the conventional choice; the filter removes the chosen color.
- Adjust while watching the preview: Refine similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction so the backdrop disappears while your subject remains intact. Lighting and distance from the backdrop affect how consistently the color appears.
- Check the finished scene: Preview movement, hair, clothing edges, and objects near the frame before going live. Adjust the filter if parts of the subject disappear or the background remains visible.
OBS notes that meeting its minimum system requirements does not guarantee adequate streaming or recording performance. Encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity also affect load.
Use background removal without a physical screen
NVIDIA Broadcast
NVIDIA Broadcast applies background removal, replacement, or blur and exposes its processed feed as a virtual camera for applications such as OBS and XSplit. NVIDIA currently lists GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher; 8 GB RAM; Windows 10 64-bit; and driver 570 or higher. It recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher. Installation requires an internet connection. Confirm the latest details at NVIDIA Broadcast and NVIDIA’s requirements page, since requirements can change.

NVIDIA’s product page includes a statement from Ben Torell of the OBS Project about collaboration on Virtual Greenscreen technology. That statement describes the collaboration; it is not a comparative endorsement of current software.
OBS Background Removal plugin
OBS Studio’s native chroma key is not the same as no-screen background segmentation. For the latter, an OBS forum resource lists a community-made Background Removal plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with OBS 28.0.0 as its stated minimum. The listing was last updated August 9, 2026. Check its current release notes, compatibility, and official resource link before installing; plugin support can change independently of OBS.

XSplit Broadcaster
XSplit Broadcaster is Windows production and recording software with automatic VCam-based background removal as well as Chroma Key and Color Key modes. Its support page says higher automatic-removal quality settings use more hardware resources. Consult XSplit’s virtual-background support information and the Broadcaster product page for current capabilities and system requirements.
Costs and plan restrictions
OBS Studio is free and open source. NVIDIA presents Broadcast as a downloadable app; its product page does not establish that buying an RTX GPU solely for background removal is worthwhile. Consider the GPU’s cost against your broader uses and existing hardware.

Test before choosing
A background that looks clean in a still preview can behave differently when you move, turn, or bring an object into frame. Compare the options using the same camera, lighting, scene, and output settings. Watch for missing hair or clothing edges, leftover background, flicker during movement, and performance problems while streaming or recording. No comparable controlled test establishes a universal winner for cutout quality or resource use.

Common problems and fixes
- NVIDIA Broadcast is unavailable: Check that the GPU, Windows version, RAM, and driver meet NVIDIA’s current requirements. Restart the app after updating the driver.
- Your production app shows no NVIDIA virtual camera: Confirm Broadcast is open and its camera effect is enabled, then refresh or reopen the camera source list in OBS or XSplit.
- OBS Chroma Key removes part of your subject: Recheck the selected key color and reduce the amount of color being removed using the similarity control; improve backdrop lighting and separate yourself from the screen where possible.
- The background leaks through or edges look rough: Adjust similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction in OBS, then test movement and lighting again. A more consistent backdrop color can help a chroma key.
- The OBS removal plugin will not load: Confirm the plugin build supports your installed OBS version and operating system, then consult the plugin’s official resource and release notes.
- Automatic removal slows the system: Reduce the removal quality setting if available, close unnecessary workloads, or compare a different method. XSplit specifically notes that higher removal quality uses more hardware resources.
- XSplit output has a watermark or a feature is restricted: Check whether the free-plan resolution, frame-rate, scene-count, virtual-camera, or personal-use terms apply to your workflow; consult current plan terms.
