The best live-stream transcription tool depends on what you need viewers—or you—to do with the words. For captions displayed in a Twitch player, use a compatible caption source; for local processing inside OBS, consider LocalVocal; for a transcript you can search during a stream, LiveScript is a different kind of tool. No independent, comparable accuracy test establishes a single winner.

Choose the kind of transcription you need first

“Transcription” can mean several different outputs. Decide where the text must appear and who needs to control it before choosing software.

  • Platform captions: Text is delivered to the streaming platform as captions, where the platform supports a caption track or caption controls.
  • Burned-in captions: Text is composited into the video image by OBS or another production tool. Viewers see it as part of the picture, but cannot independently turn it off or restyle it.
  • Separate caption feed: Text appears on a separate page or feed. This can allow viewers to select among configured languages, but it is not the same as a native caption track in the player.
  • Searchable transcript: Text is collected so a streamer, researcher, or monitor can find spoken words. It may not add captions to the outgoing video at all.

These delivery methods are not interchangeable. If accessibility controls in the platform player matter, verify that the tool sends captions to that platform rather than merely drawing text over the video.

Best options by live-streaming workflow

Option Best fit What to weigh
Twitch caption delivery through a plugin or encoder Twitch streamers who want captions available through the player’s CC feature A compatible caption source and setup are required. Twitch’s guide describes caption files or broadcast encoders and points to an OBS caption plugin as one route. Viewer caption controls are available when captions are present. Twitch’s closed-caption guide
LocalVocal OBS plugin Streamers seeking local transcription or translation integrated with OBS The project says it uses Whisper and whisper.cpp locally and offers CPU and GPU build variants. Model choice and machine performance matter; no independent latency or accuracy comparison was verified. LocalVocal project
Hosted live-caption feed or OBS overlay Streamers looking for managed caption styling or language options Confirm whether text is burned into the video or delivered separately, how viewers select languages, and what audio is sent to the provider and retained. Subanana’s descriptions of its own features are vendor-authored; its guide explains the delivery distinction. Subanana’s streaming captions guide
LiveScript searchable transcript Streamers or monitors who need to search what was said while a stream is live LiveScript says its service transcribes YouTube and Twitch streams into searchable text and supports other browser audio through a Chrome extension. That is not necessarily a caption track for viewers. Its current language support, privacy terms, and plan limits should be checked with the vendor. LiveScript
Amazon Transcribe streaming API Developers building a custom transcription or caption pipeline Requires integration and attention to supported formats, languages, regions, quotas, and session limits. AWS warns that faster streaming can have accuracy limitations. AWS streaming transcription guidance

This is a workflow comparison, not a performance ranking: there is no independent head-to-head benchmark here for recognition accuracy or latency.

Will OBS add captions on its own?

No. OBS is a production and compositing tool, not a speech recognizer. To show recognized speech, add a caption plugin or browser source, or capture a separate caption view. A source that draws text into the OBS scene produces an overlay; it does not automatically create a viewer-toggleable caption track. This workflow distinction is described in Subanana’s streamer guide.

Using a local OBS caption plugin

LocalVocal is one example of an OBS plugin whose project describes local Whisper-based transcription, translation, on-screen captions, TXT/SRT output, timestamp syncing with OBS recordings, partial transcription, and sending captions to RTMP streams such as Twitch or YouTube. These are project claims, not independently verified performance results. Review the repository’s current release notes and download guidance, then select the build that matches your operating system and CPU or GPU hardware: LocalVocal repository.

Local processing can reduce reliance on sending audio to a transcription cloud, but it still depends on the chosen model and the computer’s capacity. Check the project’s current compatibility notes before installing, and test the load with your normal streaming scene.

Platform captions, translation, and saved recordings

Twitch captions need a caption source

Twitch’s support guidance describes captions supplied through caption files or broadcast encoders and recommends an OBS closed-caption plugin as one way to generate them in real time. It does not mean every Twitch channel receives automatic captions. When captions are available, viewers can use the CC button and adjust caption size, color, and placement. See Twitch’s guide for current implementation details.

YouTube automatic captions and translation

A Subanana guide dated July 31, 2026 describes YouTube live automatic captions as English-only and available in normal-latency mode. Treat that as a time-sensitive description, not a guarantee for every channel or viewer. Check YouTube’s current settings and test the actual stream before promising translated captions to international viewers. A third-party translation overlay or feed is a separate delivery path from YouTube’s own captions.

Will live captions be saved with the recording?

Do not assume that live captions, a separate feed, an OBS overlay, and a VOD transcript are saved in the same way. LocalVocal’s project says it can write TXT/SRT files and sync captions with OBS recording timestamps; that does not establish how Twitch or YouTube preserves a caption track. Confirm the behavior for your specific platform, recording workflow, and tool, then review the resulting VOD before relying on it.

How fast is real-time transcription?

There is no comparable independent latency test across these options, and visible speed does not establish accuracy. LiveScript’s vendor FAQ says words appear within 1–2 seconds in live mode; treat that as a vendor-stated figure, not a cross-tool benchmark. AWS cautions that faster streaming transcription may have accuracy limitations.

If you build with AWS Transcribe, its documentation recommends lossless FLAC or PCM audio, uniform chunks, and—when possible—a 16,000 Hz sample rate. It describes 50–200 ms chunks when the audio type permits specifying chunk size. AWS accepts FLAC, Ogg Opus, or signed 16-bit little-endian PCM for streaming; a WAV file is not itself the required PCM stream format. These are AWS-specific engineering recommendations, not settings to impose on every caption tool. Check AWS’s documentation for current language and regional availability, quotas, and session constraints: AWS streaming guide.

How to choose and test a tool

  1. Define the destination. Identify whether captions must be in Twitch or YouTube’s player, burned into the video, available as a separate feed, or searchable only by your team.
  2. Check language needs. Verify source-language recognition and translation support for the exact platform, plan, and workflow. Do not infer translation from the presence of transcription.
  3. Choose local or hosted processing. For local tools, check operating-system, CPU/GPU, and model requirements. For hosted tools, review what audio is transmitted, retention, training use, access controls, processing region, and deletion terms in current privacy documentation.
  4. Check transcript handling. If you need timestamps, searchable text, or exports, verify the specific format and whether it is retained after the stream. A caption overlay alone is not a searchable transcript.
  5. Run a realistic pre-live test. Use your actual microphone, game or music audio, accent, names and jargon, interruptions, and overlapping speakers. Confirm the captions reach the intended destination, remain readable, and behave as needed in the recording or VOD.
  6. Recheck plan and access limits. Language coverage, regional availability, pricing, free allowances, and privacy policies can change; verify current terms directly with the provider.

Privacy and accuracy limits

Local processing and cloud processing involve different trade-offs. A local plugin may avoid sending audio to a transcription provider, but depends on the host computer and selected model. A hosted service can simplify setup, but you should establish what happens to its audio and transcript before using it with sensitive conversations.

No independent, comparable accuracy results were verified for the named choices. Performance can vary with microphone quality, room noise, music, accents, specialist vocabulary, and speakers talking over one another. If certified accuracy is essential, Subanana’s guide identifies human CART captioners as an option; confirm provider credentials and scope directly rather than treating automated captions as certified.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube stream running around the clock, that is a different problem from transcribing live speech. StreamNeo uploads and loops videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
