The right video switcher depends on how many HDMI sources you need, whether you want to stream through a computer or directly from the hardware, and whether you need isolated recordings for editing. For a compact computer-based workflow, consider the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini models; for an integrated encoder, switcher, recorder, and monitor, compare the YoloBox family. Neither is a universal winner, and the feature descriptions below are manufacturer specifications rather than results of comparative hands-on testing.
How to choose a video switcher
Start with the workflow, not the headline input count. A switcher may send its program feed to streaming software on a computer, encode and stream directly, or support both. These approaches affect what else you need on hand: a computer and software for one workflow, or suitable network connectivity and a direct-streaming-capable model for another.
Count and match your sources
List every camera, computer, playback device, or other source you expect to connect at the same time. Then check that each source’s connector, resolution, and frame rate match the switcher’s supported inputs. Two devices both described as “HDMI” are not automatically compatible at every format.
Choose the streaming path
- USB webcam to a computer: The switcher supplies a program feed that video software can use as a webcam input. Confirm that the exact model supports this mode and that your software recognizes it.
- Direct hardware streaming: The switcher encodes and sends the stream without relying on a computer to do the encoding. Verify the exact model’s streaming features and network requirements.
- Both: Some models advertise both direct streaming and a USB webcam output. Check whether the outputs and operating modes you need can be used together.
Check monitoring, outputs, and recording
Decide whether you need multiview to watch several sources at once, a particular program or auxiliary output, or ISO recording of individual feeds for post-production. ISO is not one universal specification: check how many sources are recorded, at what resolution, the required media, and whether the audio you need is included.

Compact switchers for a computer workflow: ATEM Mini
Blackmagic Design says the ATEM Mini family switches four or eight HDMI sources depending on the model, accepts two dedicated audio sources, and can appear to video software as a regular USB webcam. Its setup information identifies multiview on Pro and Extreme models. That makes the family worth comparing when you want a hardware switcher feeding a computer, or a model with advertised hardware streaming. Check the features for the exact model rather than assuming every ATEM Mini includes the same outputs or recording options. See Blackmagic Design’s ATEM Mini setup and product information and its UK technical specifications.
If you expect to edit camera feeds separately after an event, the Pro ISO’s five record streams are a different proposition from a standard program recording. For eight-input ISO recording, Blackmagic lists that capability for the Extreme ISO G2 specifically; confirm the model revision and recording requirements before buying.

Pay close attention to the difference between physical HDMI inputs and total sources. YoloLiv says the Pro can switch up to six sources, a figure that includes sources beyond its three HDMI inputs. For Extreme, the advertised 4K60 streaming with five cameras should not be read as a promise that every one of its eight HDMI inputs can be streamed at 4K60 simultaneously. Its stated ISO figure—four cameras at 4K30—is a separate recording capability.

What to verify before buying
- Input compatibility: Check connector type, supported resolution, and frame rate for every camera or computer you will connect.
- Source-count meaning: Separate physical HDMI inputs from NDI, network, or software sources when a manufacturer gives a total source count.
- Streaming mode: Confirm if the exact model streams directly, outputs to a computer as a webcam, or supports both; check which modes and outputs can operate together.
- Monitoring and routing: Look for multiview and the specific program or auxiliary outputs your production needs. Multiview availability varies by model.
- ISO details: Confirm how many inputs are isolated, their recording resolution, media requirements, and audio handling. A claim of ISO recording alone does not answer all of these questions.
- Whole-system budget: Include any needed HDMI cables, monitor, computer, network connection, audio equipment, and compatible recording media—not just the switcher.
- Local purchase details: Manufacturer list prices are regional and can change. Check current retail stock, warranty, firmware support, and accessories for your location.
Budget for the complete workflow
The cited Blackmagic Design prices are the amounts displayed on its UK specifications page when accessed, not universal or guaranteed current prices. The cited YoloLiv pages do not state comparable prices. For either brand, compare a current local quote and the cost of the equipment needed around the switcher: cables, monitoring, network, audio, media, and—in a computer-based setup—the computer itself.
