If you’re watching a 24/7 YouTube stream on a limited connection in India, start at 360p. If it buffers or you need to conserve data, try 240p. Keep the highest setting that plays smoothly on your device and connection. If you’re the broadcaster, these playback settings do not control what you send: you need to check upload speed, encoder settings and connection stability instead.
First, are you watching or broadcasting?
“Streaming” can mean two different things. A viewer receives a playback version selected in YouTube’s player. A broadcaster sends an encoded video feed to YouTube. The best resolution for one is not automatically the right setting for the other.
- Watching: choose a player quality that balances smooth playback, picture detail and data use.
- Broadcasting: choose an encoder resolution and bitrate your sustained upload connection can support reliably.
Best resolution for watching a 24/7 YouTube stream
On a slow connection, YouTube suggests trying lower playback qualities such as 240p or 360p. Starting at 360p is a practical compromise, not a platform rule. If playback pauses, lower the quality to 240p and see whether it becomes steady. YouTube’s 16:9 dimensions for these resolutions are 640×360 and 426×240, respectively. YouTube Help: Change video quality and YouTube Help: Video resolution and aspect ratios.
- Open the YouTube player’s settings and choose Quality.
- Select 360p and watch long enough to judge playback under normal conditions.
- If it keeps buffering, return to Quality and try 240p.
- Keep the most detailed option that remains smooth on the actual device and connection you use.
Smaller screens and mostly static content may remain comfortable to watch at 240p or 360p; fine text, detailed scenes and larger displays make the loss of detail more noticeable. The lower setting can reduce the amount of video data received, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not provide a fixed data rate for each playback resolution.

How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
There is no reliable, resolution-specific 24/7 viewer data total established by the official guidance cited here. Actual use depends on the quality YouTube delivers and viewing conditions, so don’t turn a general mobile-streaming estimate into a monthly viewing bill or a claim about 240p or 360p.
YouTube’s filming advice says a mobile live stream uses about 10 MB per minute. That is a rough general filming tip, not a measurement for watching, not tied to a resolution, and not a guaranteed data rate. YouTube Help: Filming tips – Live.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If you’re broadcasting: set the encoder for your upload connection
For a broadcaster, the viewer’s 360p or 240p choice is separate from the resolution and bitrate sent to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder table lists these H.264 figures for 360p at 30 frames per second: a 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended bitrate. These are ingest settings for the encoder, not viewer data rates or a guarantee that a connection with the same nominal speed can sustain a 24/7 broadcast. Codec and frame rate affect the applicable recommendation. Check YouTube’s current table for your intended settings. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Check sustained upload, not just download
Run an upload speed test from the place and network where you plan to stream. YouTube cautions that outbound bandwidth may be lower than inbound and advises leaving 20% headroom. Shared use can also reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. A speed-test result is a snapshot; it does not by itself establish that upload will stay stable all day. - Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Choose a reliable combination and test it
Match resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate to the connection rather than selecting the highest possible picture quality. Test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. A connection that handles a static image may struggle with more movement or competing network use. YouTube’s guidance is to choose quality that produces a reliable stream for your internet connection, and to test the setup.
Improve the connection where practical
- For computer broadcasting, use Ethernet to the router where possible; YouTube recommends a wired connection for live streaming from a computer.
- On mobile, check signal strength and test at the actual streaming location.
- Account for other people and devices using the same connection.
- Do not treat an advertised download speed as proof that your upload is fast or consistent enough.
An Ethernet cable may avoid some wireless instability, but it does not increase the bandwidth supplied by your internet provider or remove a data cap. YouTube recommends leaving room in the connection; its streaming tips specify 20% as the recommended headroom.
