For a single local clip, MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a sensible compatibility-first choice for looping in OBS. Add it as a Media Source and enable Loop. This is a practical default, not a special OBS requirement: OBS supports several containers, and the file extension alone does not tell you which codecs are inside.
Choose a format based on compatibility, not the 4K60 label
The container, video codec and audio codec are separate parts of a media file. MP4 is the container; H.264 is a video codec; AAC is an audio codec. OBS describes MP4 as a de facto internet-video standard, H.264 as ubiquitous and AAC as widely supported. That makes MP4/H.264/AAC a reasonable first choice when preparing an ordinary looping clip.
OBS also supports formats including TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. A supported extension is not a guarantee that every codec combination will decode properly on your system. Check the actual file in the OBS build and playback hardware you intend to use. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.
When another option makes sense
- MKV: OBS notes its flexibility across OBS encoders and its resilience when a recording ends unexpectedly. Those are useful recording characteristics, but they do not make MKV necessary for a looping source.
- MOV: It can suit editing workflows and particular codec combinations; OBS notes it is often favored on Mac platforms.
- VLC Video: Consider it for a rotating playlist or broader VLC-library support. It relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed.
- AV1 or HEVC: Support varies by codec, container, platform and decoder. They are not needed just to loop a clip; choose them only when you have a specific reason and have verified playback support.
Loop one video in OBS
- In the scene where the clip should appear, add a Media Source and select the local video file. OBS documents Media Source for playing media files in a scene; see OBS Media Sources.
- Open the source properties and enable Loop. OBS defines this control as specifying whether the file plays again after playback completes.
- Play the source and watch at least one loop boundary. Confirm that video and audio restart as expected and that playback remains smooth in the scene.
- Enable Use hardware decoding when available only if your system has a suitable built-in decoder and testing shows it helps. It is optional, not a separate device requirement.
Use a playlist instead of repeating one clip
For several files in rotation, add a VLC Video source and use its Loop Playlist property. OBS says this source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC installed. For a single clip, Media Source’s Loop setting avoids that extra dependency.

Set the live output independently of the file
A source file’s container and codecs do not set the stream’s output resolution or frame rate. In OBS, open Settings > Video and configure the Base (Canvas) Resolution, Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values for the scene and stream you intend to produce. OBS’s overview guide says the Common FPS Value should match the desired output FPS, such as 30 or 60; see the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
If the stream should be 4K at 60 fps, set the output accordingly only if your system can render and encode it reliably. A 4K60 source does not force a 4K60 stream, and choosing MP4/H.264 does not guarantee one. The material here does not establish current YouTube Live ingest values for bitrate, keyframe interval, codec or account eligibility, so verify those separately in YouTube’s current guidance rather than guessing them.

Match source size to its on-screen size
If a source is reduced in the scene or the output is below 4K, a needlessly high-resolution source can add workload without serving the presentation. OBS cautions that 60 fps can be more taxing than 30 fps. If playback or output is choppy, reduce resolution or frame rate to a level your system can sustain. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers performance issues.

Troubleshoot common loop problems
- The file will not open: Check the codec combination, not just the extension. Try an MP4/H.264/AAC version and confirm it plays in the OBS version and on the hardware being used.
- The clip stops at the end: Reopen Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a multi-file rotation, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist.
- Playback stutters or output is choppy: Test without hardware decoding, then with it if a suitable decoder is available. Reduce output resolution or FPS, and avoid oversized sources that are scaled down. Consult OBS’s performance troubleshooting guide.
- The stream is not 4K60 even though the file is: Check OBS’s canvas, scaled output resolution and FPS settings, then verify encoder and YouTube requirements separately. The source format does not determine those output settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
