The best ultrabook depends on your apps and operating system, how much screen you want to carry, and whether you need more than a couple of ports. For a general-purpose macOS laptop, the MacBook Air M5 is a strong starting point. For a compact Windows laptop, consider the Dell XPS 13 (2026), but choose its memory configuration carefully and plan for a hub if you use several peripherals.
Battery figures below come from different reviewers and test methods, so they are useful as context—not as a direct head-to-head ranking.
What counts as an ultrabook?
Intel created and trademarked the term in the early 2010s. Today, “ultrabook” is commonly used for a premium thin-and-light laptop, including models that do not use Intel processors or Windows. That broad definition makes the label a starting point, not a specification: compare the actual model, configuration, and operating system. RTINGS’ ultrabook guide also emphasizes choosing by screen size and use rather than expecting one model to suit everyone.

Apple MacBook Air M5: a general-purpose macOS choice
The MacBook Air M5 is available with a 13.6-inch or 15-inch Liquid Retina display. Engadget lists a 2.7-pound weight, 60Hz refresh rate, MagSafe 3, a headphone jack, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Its guide lists battery life of up to 18 hours; treat that as an upper figure that varies with use, not a guarantee for your workload. Engadget’s laptop guide names the 13-inch Air its best laptop for most people.

Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours and 37 minutes for the MacBook Air M5 in its 2026 battery test. That result belongs to that reviewer’s test; it is not directly comparable with figures produced using another method. Tom’s Guide also notes a price increase over the predecessor, so check the current price for your market and exact configuration. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 13-inch laptop guide provides its review context.
Dell XPS 13 (2026): a compact Windows option
Tom’s Guide lists a 13.4-inch 2.5K touchscreen, Intel Core 5 320, configurations up to 32GB of RAM, a 2.2-pound weight, and two USB-C ports. Its continuous web-browsing test lasted 14 hours and 29 minutes. The same review flags webcam quality and the need for adapters or a hub if you connect several peripherals. Read Tom’s Guide’s XPS 13 (2026) review.
TechRadar reports more than 16 hours in a video-playback battery test, after a one-week review. That is a different workload from Tom’s Guide’s continuous web-browsing test, so the two results should not be treated as conflicting measurements or combined into a single score. TechRadar also warns that the base 8GB RAM configuration is a poor fit for demanding software or heavy multitasking. TechRadar’s XPS 13 (2026) review details its test and configuration concerns.

Other models to put on a shortlist
Rankings can help surface alternatives, but their recommendations may refer to earlier generations or specific regional configurations. RTINGS’ size-based recommendations include the MacBook Air 13 M4 (2025), ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED (2024), MacBook Air 15 M4 (2025), Lenovo ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition (2025), and LG gram 16 (2024). Treat these as dated candidates rather than assuming each is the newest version. RTINGS also flags OLED flicker concerns on certain models and application compatibility on the ARM-based Surface Laptop 7; inspect the particular panel and confirm support for your essential software.
Notebookcheck’s ultraportable ranking, updated in September 2026, includes the MacBook Air 13 M5, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13, Dell Pro 13 Premium, HP EliteBook Ultra G1i 14, and Lenovo ThinkPad convertible options. Its entries refer to particular tested configurations, weights, screens, and regional list prices. Use the ranking to identify possibilities, then verify the generation, local SKU, and current price before buying.
How to choose the right configuration
Start with your operating system and essential apps
List the software you rely on for work, school, or creative projects, then confirm it runs on the laptop’s operating system and processor architecture. This is especially important for Windows on ARM: an app may not have the compatibility or performance you need. Do not assume that a familiar model name guarantees the same processor or software behavior across configurations.

Balance screen size against portability
A 13-inch laptop is easier to carry and use in cramped spaces. A 14- or 15-inch display can make split-window work and long sessions more comfortable, but check the actual machine’s weight and dimensions rather than relying on screen size alone. The Air M5, for example, comes in both 13.6-inch and 15-inch versions, so you can weigh a larger workspace against the added size.
Read battery results with their test method
Battery life varies with display brightness, workload, wireless use, and other settings. Keep the reviewer and test attached to every number:
- MacBook Air M5: up to 18 hours listed by Engadget; an upper figure affected by use.
- MacBook Air M5: 15 hours 37 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery test.
- Dell XPS 13 (2026): 14 hours 29 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s continuous web-browsing test.
- Dell XPS 13 (2026): more than 16 hours in TechRadar’s video-playback test.
These results do not establish which laptop lasts longer in identical conditions. Use them to judge whether a candidate looks promising, then consider your own typical workload.

Check ports, memory, and storage before ordering
Count the devices you expect to connect—such as a monitor, storage drive, or wired accessories—and compare them with the exact laptop’s ports. The XPS 13 (2026) has two USB-C ports in the cited reviews; if that is not enough for your setup, a compatible USB-C hub may help. Confirm the hub supports the connections and display functions you need.
Choose enough memory for your actual workload and expected ownership period. TechRadar specifically cautions against the XPS 13’s base 8GB configuration for demanding software and aggressive multitasking; configurations up to 32GB are listed by Tom’s Guide. Check the available RAM and storage on the exact regional SKU, since the model name alone does not tell you what is included or upgradeable.
Consider display comfort, not just resolution
Resolution and refresh rate do not tell the whole story. If you are sensitive to screen flicker, check coverage of the exact panel configuration and, where possible, view it in person. RTINGS flags flicker concerns for certain OLED models, not every OLED screen. A screen’s size, finish, brightness, and how comfortable it feels during your own work also matter.

- You want a general-purpose macOS laptop: start with the MacBook Air M5 and choose between its 13.6-inch and 15-inch screen sizes.
- You want a compact Windows laptop: consider the Dell XPS 13 (2026), but avoid assuming its base 8GB RAM configuration will suit demanding or heavily multitasked work.
- You need a larger display or a business-oriented alternative: compare current local configurations of models such as the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13, Dell Pro 13 Premium, HP EliteBook Ultra G1i 14, or the larger-screen options in RTINGS’ list. Confirm that the cited generation and SKU are still available where you live.
- You depend on specialized software: prioritize confirmed app compatibility over thinness or battery claims, particularly when evaluating ARM-based Windows laptops.
Before you buy
- Write down your essential applications and confirm their compatibility with the laptop’s operating system and processor.
- Choose the screen size and weight that fit your travel and desk routine.
- Check the exact SKU for RAM, storage, display panel, processor, and ports.
