Transport Fever 2 is the closest fit if you want the modern 3D building sandbox and series-style tools; OpenTTD is the pick for classic transport-tycoon networks and multiplayer; and Railway Empire 2 suits players looking for a historically framed railway-company game. Transport Fever 3 launched on September 29, 2026, so these are alternatives for different play styles—not a single overall ranking.

Choose an alternative by the kind of game you want

  • Closest to the Transport Fever sandbox: Transport Fever 2, with interactive rail tools, modular stations, free-play configuration, map and terrain editing, and mod support.
  • Classic transport tycoon with multiplayer: OpenTTD, an open-source simulation based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe that includes larger maps and multiplayer features. Its current storefront access has a condition: a March 2026 project notice says website downloads remain free, while new Steam or GOG access is tied to owning Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
  • Historical railway-company management: Railway Empire 2, which starts players with a small railway company in the early 1800s and offers maps spanning the USA and Europe, as well as detailed regional maps.

Transport Fever 3 launched on September 29, 2026 for PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its official site highlights expanded industries and cargo chains, town development, vehicle management, dynamic weather, and expanded modding. Those are part of the context for choosing an alternative, but the documented features of the three games below do not constitute a complete head-to-head feature audit.

Transport Fever 2: the nearest series-style sandbox

Choose Transport Fever 2 if construction freedom and a contemporary 3D transport sandbox matter more to you than a historical campaign focus or multiplayer. Its official feature page describes interactive rail-construction tools and modular stations, alongside free-play configuration, map and terrain editing, and mod support. Those features make it the most directly comparable option in this group for building and customizing a transport network.

OpenTTD: classic network-building and multiplayer

OpenTTD is a better match if you want the classic transport-tycoon approach rather than the modern presentation of the Transport Fever series. The project describes it as an open-source simulation based on Transport Tycoon Deluxe, with larger maps and multiplayer features. That makes it the clearest documented choice here for players who want to build networks alongside others.

Pay attention to how you obtain it. In a March 2026 notice, the OpenTTD project said downloads from its website remain free, while new access through Steam or GOG is conditional on owning Transport Tycoon Deluxe. Storefront terms can change, so check the project notice and the current store listing before choosing a route.

Railway Empire 2 is the option for a railway-focused management game with a historical frame. Its official site describes a start in the early 1800s as a small railway company and maps covering the USA and Europe, including detailed regional maps. Pick it if that setting and railway-company premise appeal more than a sandbox built around broad transport-network construction.
