For footage you already own, the right tool depends on how much automation and editing control you want. YouTube’s app is a straightforward way to create and publish a Short in one place; CapCut can suggest highlight clips from longer videos; and Adobe Premiere on mobile offers templates and layered editing with a YouTube publishing workflow. The product details below come from each provider’s documentation, not independent testing, so check current availability and review every automated edit before publishing.
Compare the tools
| Tool | Best fit | Documented workflow | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube app and Studio | Simple clip assembly and publishing within YouTube | Start a Short in the YouTube app, edit clips from your own library, personalize the video, and optionally add a related long-form video through YouTube Studio. | Current interface, device and regional availability, and upload or format requirements. |
| CapCut | A faster first pass through longer footage | CapCut describes a desktop “Long video to shorts” feature that detects highlights, creates short clips with captions, and lets you refine, export, or share them. Its tutorial also describes mobile Auto Cut for assembling selected media. | Whether the feature is available in your current app, account, region, and plan. Manually review the suggested cuts and captions. |
| Adobe Premiere on mobile | Templates and hands-on editing, with a YouTube publishing workflow | Adobe describes importing your footage, starting from a template or from scratch, trimming and layering tracks, adding text and captions, and publishing to YouTube. Adobe also says the app supports high-resolution editing, including 4K. | Current platform support, device-specific feature differences, app requirements, and export settings. |
Which tool should you choose?
Choose YouTube for a simple edit
If you mainly need to select a moment, make a few edits, and publish, YouTube’s own creation workflow keeps those steps close together. You can also use YouTube Studio to add a related long-form video to the Short.
Choose CapCut for suggested highlights
If you are starting with a long recording, CapCut’s documented highlight detection may help you find candidate clips more quickly. Treat its output as a draft: check that each selection has enough context and that its captions match what was said.
Choose Premiere on mobile for more editing control
Premiere on mobile is a fit if you want templates, layered tracks, text, and captions, and prefer a more hands-on edit over automatic highlight selection. Adobe documents a workflow for publishing to YouTube directly.

A practical workflow for turning existing footage into a Short
- Start with footage you own. Work from the original file or a copy. Choose a moment that makes sense on its own, without requiring viewers to watch the full source first.
- Use automation as a starting point. If highlight detection or an automatic editing feature is available, try it to find possible clips. Review each proposed clip’s opening, ending, and context before using it.
- Reframe for vertical viewing. Adjust the picture so faces, products, captions, and other important details remain visible in the vertical presentation.
- Check captions and audio. Verify names, figures, and punctuation against the original audio. Confirm you have the rights to any music or other assets in the edit, and consider applicable platform restrictions.
- Add context, then publish. Include your own explanation or context where it improves the clip. Publish from the editor if that workflow suits you, or export and upload through YouTube. If the Short points viewers to a longer source, consider adding it as a related video in YouTube Studio.
Does using your own footage guarantee monetization?
No. YouTube’s channel monetization policy evaluates reused content at the channel level and describes it as repurposed material without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. The policy is separate from copyright enforcement: permission to use material does not by itself settle whether content meets monetization requirements. YouTube also says creators can use automated tools and templates, while emphasizing that the finished content should reflect creative vision and offer educational or entertainment value. Make the Short purposeful and recognizably authored; ownership alone is not a guarantee of monetization.
