To track brand visibility in AI assistants, monitor two different signals: whether your brand appears in an answer and whether the answer links to your site. Ahrefs Brand Radar and Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit both document ways to do this, but they package discovery, custom prompt tracking, and reporting differently. Neither tool’s score is a direct measure of sales, visits, or improved recommendations.
What AI brand-mention monitoring measures
AI monitoring tools check answers to prompts and report when a brand appears, which platforms or topics surfaced it, and sometimes which pages were cited. Results depend on the questions asked and the systems checked; they are not a universal census of everything AI assistants say.
Keep mentions, citations, and visibility scores separate. Ahrefs defines a mention as a brand appearing in an answer; a citation concerns an AI system linking to a brand page or domain. As its Help Center puts it, “A single mention is counted when a brand appears at least once in an AI generated response.” (Ahrefs Brand Radar; Ahrefs Help Center)

A visibility or impression figure is a vendor’s model, not a count of visits or customers. Ahrefs says its impression estimate sums Google-based search volume associated with prompts where a brand appears. Semrush describes AI Visibility as a proprietary 0–100 benchmark against competitors. Use these measures to spot patterns and investigate answers, not as proof that a tool caused business results. Why results differ between tools
A monitoring report reflects its prompt set, platform and region coverage, refresh schedule, selected competitors, and scoring method. A broad index of pre-collected questions can reveal topics a team did not think to test; a hand-picked prompt set can track the questions that matter most to a campaign or customer journey. These approaches answer different questions and are not interchangeable.
Before comparing scores, check whether the tools are measuring the same platforms, locations, prompts, time periods, and competing brands. Also check whether the figure is a raw mention count, citation count, estimated audience, or relative score. A score from one vendor should not be treated as directly comparable to another vendor’s score.

Ahrefs Brand Radar: broad discovery plus custom checks
Ahrefs positions Brand Radar as a search-backed discovery tool alongside focused custom prompt monitoring. Its Help Center article, dated September 3, 2026, describes an index of more than 405 million prompts modeled on real keywords in Ahrefs’ database. The current product page reports 449M+ prompts. These are different vendor-reported figures from different pages, not an independently verified stable total; check the live product page if the index size matters to your decision. Platforms and discovery
The dated Help Center article lists Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok for Brand Radar, and says Claude is available for custom prompts only. It also notes that new Grok data collection is temporarily unavailable. Ahrefs describes related web visibility and emerging YouTube, Reddit, and TikTok indexes. Availability and collection status can change, so confirm the current platform list for the region and plan you need.

Custom prompt monitoring
Custom prompts let teams choose a question, assistant, location, and refresh cadence. The Help Center describes monthly, weekly, or daily checks; each assistant and cadence consumes checks. This makes custom monitoring useful when a team has a defined list of questions to revisit, while the broad index helps surface brand and topic patterns beyond that list. The same Help Center article lists plan examples of 150 monthly checks for Lite, 300 for Standard, and 600 for Advanced, plus add-on packages and separate overage charges. These are dated commercial details, not guaranteed current prices or allowances; verify the live plan terms before purchase.

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: monitoring within a wider workflow
Semrush documents a workflow spanning brand presence, prompt research and tracking, competitor gap analysis, cited pages, sentiment and narratives, reporting, and technical checks for AI bot accessibility. The feature set may suit teams that want monitoring alongside other SEO and competitor work rather than only a standalone prompt tracker. Semrush’s public solution FAQ lists ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, SearchGPT, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews. It says enterprise AIO adds additional depth and coverage for multi-market programs. Its metrics documentation defines mentions as prompts in which a brand appears, monthly audience as an estimate of query audience across relevant topics, and topic or source opportunities as prompts or sources where competitors appear but the brand does not. The solution page describes brand sentiment and narrative intelligence across 68,000+ location-language combinations with weekly refreshes, and daily prompt tracking for specific prompts on some features. Those cadences apply to different capabilities; do not assume every metric updates daily or weekly. Prompt allowances also vary by offering: the page lists 25 prompts for AI Visibility Toolkit, 50 for Semrush One Starter, and up to 200 for Advanced. Confirm current plan names and limits before buying.
How to choose and compare
There is no evidence here establishing a universal winner or a comparative accuracy benchmark. Match the tool to the monitoring question and verify the operational details that determine whether its reports will be useful:
- Question scope: Do you need broad index discovery, a controlled list of team-selected prompts, or both?
- Coverage: Are the assistants, AI search features, regions, and languages you care about included in the relevant plan?
- Metrics: Can your team distinguish answer mentions, links to your pages, estimated audience or impressions, and competitor-relative scores?
- Cadence and capacity: How often are the specific prompts or metrics refreshed, and how many checks or tracked prompts does the plan allow?
- Competitors and reporting: Can you include the entities you need and export or share results in the format your team uses?
- Workflow fit: Would a focused monitoring product be enough, or is it more useful to combine AI visibility with competitor research, sentiment, reporting, and SEO activity?
Run a small, consistent set of prompts across the platforms and locations that matter to your organization, and retain the prompt wording and date alongside the results. That makes changes easier to interpret when the tool’s coverage or refresh timing differs. Treat visibility signals as leads for reviewing answers and cited pages; measure visits, leads, or other business outcomes separately.
