In Buffer’s analysis, the strongest Instagram posting slots were Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at noon, and Wednesday at 6 p.m. Wednesday was the best day overall, with Thursday and Tuesday next. These are study-wide benchmarks—not guarantees—so use them alongside activity data for your own followers.
What are the best times to post on Instagram?
Buffer’s analysis ranked Thursday at 9 a.m. first, followed by Wednesday at noon and Wednesday at 6 p.m. It found Wednesday strongest overall, while Thursday and Tuesday ranked next. Friday and Saturday were the weakest days overall.
The hours are normalized to local time zones. They are not times to convert from one central reference timezone, and the rankings describe median engagement across the analyzed accounts rather than a promised result for any individual post.

Best posting times by day
Buffer reported these leading slots for each day. Its day-level rankings and listed slots should be read together: a day can have a few comparatively strong hours and still rank poorly overall.

|---|---|---|
| Monday | 7 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. | Evening slots lead |

| Saturday | 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. | One of the weakest days overall |

What Buffer measured—and what the numbers mean
Buffer published the findings on September 23, 2026, drawing on 9.6 million Instagram posts from more than 200,000 Buffer accounts. The Instagram posts covered January 2024 through December 2025; the publication date does not mean the posts were collected in 2026. The wider State of Social Engagement 2026 report covered 52 million posts across 10 platforms. Buffer’s Instagram analysis
Rank #2
The reported outcome was median engagement rate: likes, comments, shares, and saves divided by followers, multiplied by 100. Buffer says it used the median to reduce the influence of outliers and very large accounts. This is an engagement measure—not a direct measure of reach, sales, or guaranteed distribution.
The analysis grouped post formats together. It therefore does not establish separate best times for Reels, carousels, Stories, or static posts, nor does it show that the listed times are best for every objective.
How to use these times for your own account
Treat the study’s slots as test windows, then check whether your audience’s behavior points to a different schedule. Instagram’s professional dashboard or Insights can show follower activity; use that account-level information to refine when you publish.
- Check your audience activity. In Instagram, open your professional dashboard or Insights and review when your followers are active.
- Choose a few candidate windows. Start with Thursday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at noon or 6 p.m., then consider the other day-specific windows that fit your audience’s activity and your publishing routine.
- Compare like with like. When learning from your own account, compare posts with similar formats and goals rather than attributing every difference to posting time.
- Track the outcome that matters. Engagement rate, reach, views, follows, and conversions answer different questions. Buffer’s ranking is based on median engagement rate, so it cannot settle which time will maximize a different outcome.
Buffer’s analysis does not prove that a particular format has its own peak time. If you want to know whether your Reels or carousels perform differently by hour, compare those formats separately in your own account.
Rank #4
Does posting time matter?
The analysis shows that engagement varied by day and hour across the accounts it studied, which makes timing a reasonable factor to test. It does not establish that timing alone caused the differences or reveal Instagram’s current ranking signals. The practical takeaway is to use the benchmarks to inform scheduling, then judge the results against your audience and your chosen goal.
