For most powered subwoofers, buy a shielded RCA-to-RCA coaxial cable in the shortest practical length. A well-made budget cable is enough for a typical receiver-to-subwoofer connection; pay more when you need a custom length, better interference protection, an appropriate in-wall rating, or a particular connector, warranty, or finish.

Quick picks: Monoprice RG6/U is a strong value choice; Blue Jeans Cable LC-2 suits custom or noise-sensitive runs; and LC-1 is the model Blue Jeans describes as CM-rated for in-wall use. Premium cables from AudioQuest and REL are options for buyers who value their construction, design, or brand match—not necessary upgrades for everyone.

What cable does a powered subwoofer need?

A typical powered subwoofer connects to an AV receiver, preamp, or integrated amplifier with a line-level analog signal. Use the receiver’s SUBWOOFER OUT, LFE OUT, or equivalent preamp output and the subwoofer’s LFE IN, LINE IN, or RCA input. The usual cable has an RCA plug at each end.

“RCA” names the connector; “coaxial” describes the cable’s construction: a center conductor surrounded by insulation and a shield. “LFE” refers to the low-frequency effects channel or the equipment’s corresponding input/output label, not a special connector standard. A subwoofer cable is commonly a product-category name rather than a requirement for a unique kind of cable. Blue Jeans Cable explains the distinction between RCA connectors and coaxial construction.

Do you need a dedicated subwoofer cable?

Usually not. A regular RCA cable can work if it is long enough, has a secure fit, and is adequately shielded for the route and surroundings. A cable sold specifically for subwoofers may be useful for its shielding, durable termination, flexibility, choice of lengths, or installation rating, but the label alone does not guarantee any of those features.

A 75-ohm RCA-terminated digital coaxial cable is also suitable for an analog LFE connection. Its 75-ohm specification is not a mandatory rule for analog subwoofer use; it is simply a common coaxial option with useful shielding. Nor does coaxial construction alone make every cable suitable: check the connectors, shielding, flexibility, and any required building-code rating.

What to look for when buying

Compatibility and connectors

For the usual receiver-to-powered-subwoofer connection, choose RCA-to-RCA. Use XLR only when both devices have compatible balanced connections; an RCA-to-XLR adapter is not a universal upgrade because wiring and grounding depend on the equipment. Some REL subwoofers also accept a high-level speaker signal, which requires the method specified in the subwoofer manual and is not the same connection as an RCA LFE cable.

Shielding and interference

For an unbalanced RCA connection, shielding is a key practical defense against interference. Prefer a cable with clearly stated, properly terminated shielding rather than relying on vague claims such as “premium” or “noise-free.” Blue Jeans Cable recommends dense braid shielding for low-frequency hum concerns and reports that its double-braid configuration performed better than several alternatives in its own testing; that is the manufacturer’s test claim, not an independent industry-wide finding. Its cable page describes the construction and testing.

If the system is picking up radio-frequency interference, a braid-and-foil construction may be worth considering. Blue Jeans points to braid-over-foil cable such as Belden 1694A for some RFI situations, while noting that interference can also enter through the subwoofer’s circuitry. See its discussion of shielding and RFI.

Length, routing, and flexibility

Measure the actual route, not the straight-line distance. Leave enough slack to move the subwoofer for placement experiments, avoid tension at the jacks, and prevent a sharp bend right behind a connector. Six to 12 feet is common in living rooms, but the right length depends on the layout. Long runs are not automatically unusable; they make good shielding and careful routing more important.

Keep the signal cable away from AC cords, power bricks, dimmers, and bundles of extension cords where practical. Cross power cables at roughly 90 degrees rather than running alongside them. RG6-style cable can provide robust shielding but may be stiff; a more flexible coaxial cable can be easier to route behind furniture or in a crowded rack.

Connector fit and construction

The RCA plug should fit firmly without requiring excessive force. Loose plugs can cause intermittent bass, crackling when moved, noise, or a connection that falls out behind furniture. Look for sensible strain relief and a connector housing that fits the available space; locking or threaded RCA designs can help in some installations but may not fit recessed or cramped sockets. Gold plating can resist corrosion, but it does not by itself improve sound.

In-wall rating

If the cable will run inside a wall or ceiling, verify the jacket marking and the rating required for the specific installation and local code. CL2, CL3, CM, CMR, and CMP are installation ratings, not audio-quality grades. The requirements can differ for air-handling spaces, and a cable rating does not by itself establish that every part of an installation is compliant. Blue Jeans identifies LC-1 as CM-rated and distinguishes it from LC-2, which it does not describe as in-wall rated. Confirm the applicable code and installation conditions before running cable inside a building.

Value for a typical setup Monoprice 6 ft RG6/U Published specifications include 75-ohm RG6/U construction, double copper-braid shielding, gold-plated RCA connectors, a 97% oxygen-free-copper conductor, 22 pF/ft capacitance, and a lifetime warranty. Listed at $17.99 for the 6-foot cable when checked August 16, 2026. Price may change; RG6 can be relatively stiff, and other length variants may differ in price or availability.
Custom or noise-sensitive run Blue Jeans Cable LC-2 Double-braid shielding, custom-length ordering, and manufacturer-listed capacitance below 11 pF/ft; useful when documented construction or a specific length matters. Blue Jeans does not describe LC-2 as its in-wall-rated option. Its shielding performance statements are manufacturer claims. Pricing depends on length and options.
In-wall-oriented option Blue Jeans Cable LC-1 Blue Jeans lists CM rating, double-braid shielding, Taversoe RCA terminations, and approximately 12.2 pF/ft capacitance. CM is not a blanket approval for every wall, ceiling, or plenum installation; check local requirements and the cable marking.
Premium branded option AudioQuest Boxer RCA AudioQuest lists silver-plated copper conductors, carbon-based noise-dissipation layers, air-tube insulation, and a double-balanced geometry for single-ended use. Current price was not established here. The construction and performance descriptions are the manufacturer’s claims; no universal audible bass improvement is established.
Luxury REL system match REL Commodore .1/LFE REL lists an OFC signal conductor, separate ground path, foil shield, reverse-threaded RCA connectors, a three-year warranty, and 3 m, 5 m, 8 m, and 12 m lengths. The 3 m version was listed at $399 on August 16, 2026. REL states a 60-day trial/free-return policy for qualifying direct purchases in the U.S. and U.K.; review the current terms. This is a costly preference, not a routine requirement.

For most buyers, start with the least expensive cable that provides the correct plugs, a reliable fit, enough length, and adequate shielding. Blue Jeans lists a 30-day return policy; check each seller’s current warranty, return terms, and price before buying.

How to connect the cable

  1. Turn off or mute the receiver or amplifier and the subwoofer.
  2. Find the receiver’s SUBWOOFER OUT, LFE OUT, or equivalent preamp output, and the subwoofer’s LFE IN, LFE INPUT, or RCA line input.
  3. Connect one end of the RCA cable to the receiver output and the other to the subwoofer’s dedicated LFE input, if it has one.
  4. Select the appropriate input on the subwoofer if it has an input selector, then run the receiver’s subwoofer setup or calibration routine.
  5. Set crossover and other controls according to both manuals. With an AVR’s LFE output, the receiver generally handles bass management; the subwoofer crossover may need to be bypassed or set high if its manufacturer recommends that arrangement.

A Monoprice manual illustrates connecting a receiver’s LFE output to a subwoofer’s LFE input with a single RCA-ended digital coaxial cable. Read the manual.

If the subwoofer has left and right inputs but no LFE input

Follow the subwoofer manual. Some models specify the left/mono input; others may benefit from feeding both inputs with an RCA Y-adapter. Do not assume a Y-adapter is always needed or always increases output. Blue Jeans also advises checking the subwoofer manufacturer’s instructions for dual-input connections. See its Y-adapter guidance.

If you are connecting two subwoofers

Use two receiver subwoofer outputs if available and follow the receiver’s setup instructions. If there is only one output, use the manufacturer-recommended splitter or distribution method. A passive Y-splitter can divide the signal, but it does not address subwoofer placement or calibration. For longer parallel runs, pay attention to routing and shielding.

How much should you spend?

A useful rough shopping range is about $10–$25 for a short, shielded cable, $25–$100 for longer, custom, or more specialized construction, and $100 or more for premium products. These are broad buying tiers, not verified current prices for every brand or length. The Monoprice 6-foot cable was listed at $17.99, and REL’s 3-meter Commodore was listed at $399, both on August 16, 2026; prices can change.

Spending more can buy custom sizing, construction details, connector design, appearance, warranty, or a brand match. It does not establish that bass will become deeper, tighter, or more controlled. For an ordinary system with no hum, interference, or fit problem, a costly replacement is difficult to justify on sound-quality claims alone.

How to troubleshoot subwoofer hum or interference

Hum can come from a ground loop or from interference picked up along the signal path; it does not automatically mean the cable is defective. Try these checks in order:

  1. Confirm the noise comes through the signal path: leave the subwoofer powered and disconnect the RCA cable from its input. If the hum stops, investigate the source, cable, and grounding relationship; if it continues, the cause may be at the subwoofer or its power connection.
  2. Route the RCA cable away from AC cords, power bricks, dimmers, and extension-cord bundles. If they must cross, cross at approximately 90 degrees.
  3. Try a well-shielded cable with secure plugs, especially if the existing cable is poorly shielded, damaged, or loosely fitted.
  4. Where practical, power connected audio equipment from the same electrical circuit and see whether the symptom changes.
  5. If hum remains, consider whether a ground-loop isolator appropriate to the connection or professional audio/electrical troubleshooting is warranted. An isolator is not a universal cure.
  6. For radio or other RF signals coming through the subwoofer, try different cable routing and shielding, but remember the interference may enter through the subwoofer’s internal circuitry rather than the cable.

Never defeat an equipment safety ground by removing its grounding pin. Blue Jeans distinguishes ground-loop hum from interference that better cable shielding can address and discusses isolation-transformer approaches. Read its hum guidance.

When a cable is not the right solution

  • Proprietary soundbar subwoofer: verify the soundbar’s actual output and the subwoofer’s input; many are designed for a specific wireless link rather than RCA.
  • Passive subwoofer: an RCA cable carries a line-level signal and does not provide the amplification a passive speaker requires.
  • High-level input: use the speaker-level connection method specified by the subwoofer maker; it is a different connection category from LFE RCA.
  • Hard-to-route location: a wireless adapter may avoid a visible floor run, but adds powered transmitter/receiver units and setup complexity. It is unnecessary if a short cable can be routed cleanly.
  • Very long or complex installation: consider balanced connections only if both devices support them, or an appropriate active/buffered distribution method. Do not assume an arbitrary RCA cable will behave identically at every distance.
