OBS Studio is the best starting point for most gamers who want a free, flexible streaming app; Streamlabs Desktop is a strong alternative if you prefer guided setup, built-in overlays, alerts, and widgets. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on your operating system, production needs, PC capacity, and preferred workflow. The official product documentation does not provide a controlled performance comparison, so there is no evidence-based universal winner on speed or stream quality.
Which gaming streaming software should you choose?
| Your priority | Good fit to evaluate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Broad operating-system support and detailed control over scenes and sources | OBS Studio | OBS lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support and documents flexible sources, transitions, audio filters, and VST support. OBS Project |
| A guided first setup with channel linking and overlay selection | Streamlabs Desktop | Its quick-start guide walks through linking a channel, choosing overlays, capturing gameplay, configuring audio, and going live. Streamlabs Desktop quick-start guide (May 20, 2026) |
| Custom or scene-heavy production | OBS Studio is a strong candidate | Its sources can combine gameplay, windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. Actual performance depends on hardware and scene complexity. |
| Multistreaming | Check Streamlabs’ current plan and destination eligibility | Streamlabs describes multistreaming to integrated destinations and RTMP, subject to platform requirements and stream keys. Confirm current plan terms before relying on a feature. Streamlabs getting-started guide (July 9, 2026) |
| Broadcasting console gameplay through a computer | Either app, with a compatible capture card | OBS supports capture cards as sources. Check compatibility with your console, card, ports, operating system, and target resolution before buying. |
OBS Studio: flexible, free, and hands-on
OBS Studio is free and open source. Its production model centers on scenes built from sources: you can combine game or window capture with images, text, browser windows, a webcam, or a capture card. It also offers configurable transitions and per-source audio filters, with VST support documented by the OBS Project. See the OBS Project for current platform and product details.
This flexibility makes OBS a useful fit when you want to build a custom layout or control how individual video and audio elements behave. It also means you should allow time to arrange and test your scenes rather than assuming a complex setup will work well by default.
Streamlabs Desktop: a guided route to a finished setup
Streamlabs Desktop is geared toward a more assisted workflow. Its May 2026 quick-start guide covers linking a channel, selecting overlays, capturing gameplay, configuring audio, and going live. That can be appealing if you want more of the setup path presented inside the desktop workflow.

Will your computer handle streaming?
Streaming software shares system resources with the game, capture sources, overlays, and other running apps. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity all affect the workload. OBS warns that “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Its system requirements page explains that demands vary with settings and scenes.

Streamlabs’ published hardware and connection guidance
Streamlabs’ system-requirements page, last updated April 8, 2026, lists 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. It also gives example processor and graphics-card classes; those are vendor guidelines, not a guarantee that a particular game and scene will run smoothly. The same page suggests 3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. That figure is not a universal requirement for other resolutions, frame rates, or services. Consult the live page for its current guidance: Streamlabs Desktop system requirements.
Use settings as a starting point, then test
Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 setup guide names Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X and higher, and Nvidia RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series, as recommended examples. They are not a universal shopping list. The guide suggests 60 FPS for fast-action games and 30 FPS for slower card games as starting points, not rules for every game or computer.

For OS guidance, that quick-start guide gives Windows 11 or macOS 12 as minimums and recommends newer versions. Because vendor pages can differ as they are updated, check Streamlabs’ current system-requirements page before installing. OBS recommends beginning with its Auto Configuration Wizard to identify settings suited to your hardware and intended output.
Set up and test before your first public stream
- Choose the app for your workflow. Use OBS if scene/source control and broad OS support matter most; try Streamlabs if you prefer its guided channel-linking and overlay setup.
- Run the app’s setup process. In OBS, start with the Auto Configuration Wizard. In Streamlabs Desktop, follow its quick-start flow for channel linking, overlays, gameplay capture, and audio.
- Add only the sources you need. A microphone is useful for commentary; a webcam is optional for a face-camera scene. For console gameplay, research a capture card and verify the relevant console, ports, OS, and resolution compatibility.
- Make a short test recording or private test broadcast. Check that gameplay appears correctly, voice and game audio are balanced, video and audio stay in sync, and the delivered frame rate is acceptable while the game is running.
- Adjust the setup if the test struggles. Reduce scene complexity or demanding output settings, close unnecessary applications, and test again. A minimum system specification alone does not predict performance for your particular game and scene.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The stream stutters or the game slows down: Streaming, the game, and scene sources compete for resources. Close unnecessary applications, simplify overlays and sources, and test less demanding output settings.
- Gameplay is missing from the scene: Confirm the intended game, window, or capture-card source is added and points to the correct input. For a console, check the full console-to-card-to-computer connection and compatibility.
- Viewers cannot hear you or game audio: Check that the intended microphone and game-audio sources are present, selected, and producing levels in the app. Make another short test before going live.
- Audio and video do not stay in sync: Recheck the capture path and source configuration, then record a test to verify timing before broadcasting publicly.
- Streamlabs feature is unavailable: Confirm that the feature is included in your current plan and that the destination meets its eligibility requirements; multistream availability can depend on both.
