There is no single best streaming service for every household. Choose by matching the current catalog to the films, shows, franchises, and originals you actually want, then compare the plan’s price, ads, exclusions, viewing limits, downloads, and device support. The details below focus on U.S. plans and pages checked October 4, 2026; prices, catalogs, and rights can change.

How to choose a streaming service

A service’s overall reputation cannot tell you whether it has the titles your household wants this month. Start with a short watchlist: include specific movies, current series, older library favorites, and originals—not just broad genres or franchises. Catalogs change as licensing rights shift, and a title’s availability can depend on location.

Then compare the plan you would actually buy, rather than treating the lowest advertised tier as representative of the whole service. Check whether it includes ads, sports, movies, originals, downloads, and enough simultaneous streams. If you are considering a bundle, compare its cost with the subscriptions you would otherwise keep and confirm the renewal price and terms.

  • Catalog: Search for named titles and verify they are currently available in your country.
  • Price: Distinguish monthly from annual billing, introductory offers from renewal rates, and bundle terms from standalone subscriptions.
  • Ads and exclusions: A lower-priced tier may omit major content categories; an ad-free tier may still have exceptions.
  • Viewing features: Check simultaneous streams, supported downloads, video quality, and title-specific restrictions.
  • Compatibility: Confirm that the service’s app works on your exact TV or device model.
  • Live programming: Count sports or live channels as a benefit only if you watch them, and check the applicable country and season.

Apple TV: an originals-focused option

Apple presents Apple TV as a home for Apple Originals, with new releases weekly and no ads. Its U.S. page lists a price of $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial. The subscription does not include third-party subscription services or content available to rent or buy in the Apple TV app, so access to that app should not be mistaken for access to every title shown there. The page also lists Friday Night Baseball, MLS matches, and U.S.-only Formula 1 coverage beginning in 2026; sports rights are region- and date-specific. Apple says the subscription can be shared with up to five family members. Supported access listed includes Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Android, Windows, and the web. See Apple’s U.S. Apple TV page.

Peacock: compare the tier, not just the name

Peacock’s U.S. plans differ substantially in what they include. The official page showed these prices on October 4, 2026:

Rank #2
Sony BDP-S1700U Full HD 1080p Blu-ray DVD Player with HDMI Cable
  • Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
  • Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
  • Easy set-up with included HDMI cord

  • Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
Plan Monthly Annual What the page says is included
Select $8.99 $89.99 TV favorites; excludes sports, movies, and Peacock Originals
Premium $12.99 $129.99 Live sports, hit movies, and Peacock Originals with ads
Premium Plus $19.99 $199.99 Those categories, downloads, and no ads in most content

Premium Plus is not entirely ad-free: Peacock notes limited exceptions and ads during channels and live sports or events. Not all content can be downloaded. The Select tier’s exclusions make it a poor fit if movies, sports, or Peacock Originals are the reason you want Peacock. Check Peacock’s U.S. plan details.

Disney+ and Hulu: a bundle with separate libraries and rules

Hulu’s U.S. page lists a Disney+ and Hulu bundle at $12.99 per month and a Premium bundle at $21.99 per month, with offer eligibility and terms applying. Hulu describes its library as including full seasons, current episodes, Hulu Originals, movies, and kids’ shows; Disney+ includes Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic. The page describes two simultaneous screens for Hulu and four for Disney+, plus selected downloads on supported devices. Those figures and features apply as described on the page, not necessarily to every title or app situation.

Rank #3
Blu Ray DVD Player Dolby Digital TrueHD/DTS and 1080P Full HD
  • 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔 𝗕𝗹𝘂-𝗿𝗮𝘆 & 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 1 𝗗𝗩𝗗 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿: Plays Region A Blu-ray discs and Region 1 DVDs for reliable home entertainment in the United States.
  • 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮-𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱: Delivers exceptional 1080p Full HD video and supports premium audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD for an immersive home theater.
  • 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗗𝗩𝗗 𝗨𝗽-𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗛𝗗𝗠𝗜: Breathes new life into your standard DVDs by intelligently converting the signal to a high-quality 1080p output.

Bundling does not merge every title or rule into one library. Hulu says selected Hulu content may be available in Disney+, while some content remains in the Hulu app; location data, app features, simultaneous streaming, and rights restrictions can affect access. Confirm which bundle tier and renewal price you are selecting. Review Hulu’s Disney+ and Hulu bundle information.

What about Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and Paramount+?

A Tom’s Guide comparison published September 6, 2026, discusses Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max, and Paramount+ alongside Apple TV, Peacock, and Disney+/Hulu. It offers an editorial perspective on catalog strengths and reports dated tier prices, but those prices and terms have not been verified here against the services’ official plan pages. Use the comparison as a starting point for deciding which catalogs to investigate, not as current pricing authority. Check each service’s local plan page before comparing costs. Read Tom’s Guide’s comparison.

Do you need a separate streaming device?

Not necessarily. Apple lists access through smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles, Apple devices, Android, Windows, and the web. If your TV or another device already supports the apps you want, buying a separate player may add no useful capability. Check app availability for your specific model and country first; buy hardware only if it solves a compatibility, video, or usability problem you have identified. Apple lists its supported access options; a broader device compatibility check is also discussed in Tom’s Guide’s service comparison.

Why rankings and prices go stale

Streaming catalogs and subscription terms move over time, so a service that fits one household—or one month—may not fit another. A September 6, 2026 Tom’s Guide report noted an Apple TV price increase that had just been announced, illustrating why even recent comparisons need checking against current plan pages. That publication also reported that more than 35% of its survey respondents said they paid over $60 monthly for streaming; this is a Tom’s Guide survey figure, not a nationally representative estimate established here.

Release volume can fluctuate too. The FCC’s 2024 report cited third-party analysis estimating that seven large services released 367 new TV seasons in the first half of 2024, compared with 452 in the first half of 2023. Those are figures attributed by the FCC report to third-party analysis, not an original FCC count. Read the FCC’s 2024 report.

A practical way to keep costs under control

  1. Make a watchlist. Write down the specific titles your household expects to watch soon, including any must-have originals or live events.
  2. Check current availability. Search each service’s catalog in your location; do not assume a franchise or title is included because a service is known for it.
  3. Choose the right tier. Compare ads, excluded categories, downloads, screens, and annual versus monthly billing against how you actually watch.
  4. Do the bundle math. Compare the bundle’s applicable renewal price with the individual plans you would otherwise retain, and account for content that still requires a separate app.
  5. Verify devices and terms before payment. Check the exact device, country, trial eligibility, and current checkout price.
  6. Reassess when your watchlist changes. A service may be worth keeping for a particular season or release window without being a permanent fit for every month.
