There is no single best 4K streaming device for every TV. Roku Streaming Stick 4K is a strong fit if you want broad HDR-format support in a stick; Google TV Streamer (4K) stands out for built-in Gigabit Ethernet and 32 GB of storage; Apple TV 4K suits people who value Apple services and Dolby Atmos; and a Fire TV Stick 4K is worth considering if Amazon’s interface and services suit you. Choose by the exact model, your TV’s HDR formats, connection requirements, and preferred ecosystem—not by the 4K label alone.
Which streaming device is best for a 4K TV?
All four ecosystems have a documented 4K device example, but these products differ in HDR compatibility, networking, audio support, and platform features. The specifications below are not the result of an independent head-to-head performance test. Check the exact model and local availability before buying, especially for Fire TV generations and the current Apple TV 4K generation.
| Device | 4K and HDR | Connectivity and other documented features | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K | Supported formats depend on the generation. Amazon lists specifications by model in its Fire TV device specifications. | Amazon’s comparison table includes multiple 4K Stick generations and models. Check the exact row for features before purchase. | People who prefer Amazon’s Fire TV interface and services; verify the specific model sold in your country. |
| Roku Streaming Stick 4K | Up to 4K HDR at 60 fps; Roku lists Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. | Dual-band 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi. Requires a compatible TV HDMI input supporting HDCP 2.2. | People seeking a stick with several listed HDR formats. Confirm that your TV supports the format you want. |
| Apple TV 4K | Dolby Vision up to 2160p at 60 fps, plus HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. | Wi-Fi 6 and Dolby Atmos are listed in Apple’s specifications. | People who prefer Apple’s ecosystem or need the listed audio and HDR support. |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | Up to 4K HDR at 60 fps; Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG. | Wi-Fi 802.11ac, 32 GB storage, Dolby Atmos, and Gigabit Ethernet. Google says a certified HDMI 2.1 cable is required and sold separately. | People who want wired Ethernet or more onboard storage for apps. |

Does my streaming device support Dolby Vision?
Roku Streaming Stick 4K, Apple TV 4K, and Google TV Streamer (4K) list Dolby Vision support. The format list for Fire TV Stick 4K varies by generation, so check Amazon’s specification row for the exact device you are considering rather than assuming every Fire TV Stick 4K is identical.

Dolby Vision support on a streamer does not guarantee Dolby Vision playback. Your TV must also support Dolby Vision, and the content and app must provide it. The same principle applies to HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG: match the format to the TV and the content. A device can offer multiple formats, but only a format supported across the playback chain can be used.
What should I check before connecting a 4K streamer?
A streamer cannot make a non-4K television display native 4K. Before buying, check the TV’s resolution and HDR capabilities, the available HDMI input, and any model-specific connection requirements.

- Cable: Google says Google TV Streamer requires a certified HDMI 2.1 cable, sold separately.
- Network: Check that Wi-Fi reaches the TV reliably, or consider a device with Ethernet if you prefer a wired connection. Of these compared products, Google explicitly lists Gigabit Ethernet.
- Audio setup: If you use a soundbar or receiver, check that it supports the audio format you intend to use. Apple lists Dolby Atmos; Google also lists Dolby Atmos.
For exact Fire TV requirements, consult the Amazon specifications for the generation being sold; requirements can vary by model.
How should I choose between the four platforms?
Choose by HDR compatibility
Start with your TV’s supported formats. Roku, Apple, and Google list Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG across their cited product specifications, though Roku’s page specifies its listed HDR output up to 60 fps. For Fire TV, identify the generation first and match its specification to the television.
Rank #3
- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Choose by wired networking and storage
Google TV Streamer is the clearest fit in this group if you want a built-in Ethernet port: Google lists Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000 Mbps) and 32 GB of storage. Apple lists Wi-Fi 6, while Roku lists dual-band 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi and Google lists 802.11ac. The cited pages do not establish comparable Ethernet or storage specifications for every other model, so check the exact model page if those details are decisive.
Choose by ecosystem and everyday interface
Consider which platform you already use and prefer. Fire TV is tied to Amazon’s platform, Apple TV 4K to Apple’s ecosystem, and Google TV Streamer to Google TV. Roku offers Roku’s own interface. App and service availability can vary by device, country, and time; check the apps you rely on for the specific model and region rather than assuming a universal lineup.

Compare local price and availability
Prices and stock vary by country and retailer, and product generations can differ between markets. Compare the exact model available locally and its current price; do not treat one generation’s specification or availability as applying to every device bearing the same family name.
Do I need a new HDMI cable for a 4K streaming device?
Not necessarily: it depends on the device and your existing cable. Google explicitly requires a certified HDMI 2.1 cable for Google TV Streamer (4K), sold separately. Roku’s cited requirement is a compatible HDMI input supporting HDCP 2.2; its product page does not specify a separately purchased cable requirement. Check the instructions for the exact model and the capabilities of the TV input before replacing a cable.
