There is no evidence-based universal winner among these speech-to-text APIs. For an AI notetaker, choose first between live streaming and transcription of a completed recording, then compare the features and costs for that exact workflow. OpenAI, Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, and AssemblyAI each document relevant options, but their mode-specific features and billing meters differ. Test shortlisted services on the same real meeting audio before committing.

Which speech-to-text API should you choose?

Use this shortlist as a starting point, not a definitive ranking of the whole market. The provider documentation describes available workflows and features; it does not establish which service produces the most accurate transcript on your meetings. Choose based on the capture path, speaker and timestamp requirements, languages, expected bill, and results from your own matched-audio evaluation.

  • For an OpenAI-based workflow: use its file transcription route for completed recordings and its Realtime transcription workflow for audio that is still arriving. The documented routes differ in capabilities, including speaker labeling.
  • For Google Cloud: evaluate Chirp 3 in Speech-to-Text V2 when you need its documented streaming, synchronous, or batch modes. Its diarization and timestamp features are not interchangeable across modes.
  • For a streaming notetaker: AssemblyAI documents partial and final transcripts, word timestamps, keyterm prompting, and speaker diarization on its streaming product. Model choice affects listed price and language coverage, and streaming charges can include idle connection time.

These are conditional fits, not quality rankings. A language count or feature list cannot tell you how well an API handles your speakers, room noise, jargon, or recording equipment.

Choose the transcription workflow before the model

Live transcription

Use streaming when the notetaker must process microphone, call, or media audio as it arrives. Decide what latency the user experience can tolerate and whether the interface needs partial results, finalized segments, timestamps, or speaker labels. Verify that each required feature is supported together in the specific streaming model and configuration you plan to use.

OpenAI directs ongoing audio to its Realtime transcription workflow. AssemblyAI describes its streaming API for notetakers and other live applications. Google documents streaming recognition for Chirp 3. These descriptions establish available workflows, not a comparable latency benchmark.

Transcription of a completed recording

For a saved meeting file, batch or file transcription may be a better fit than keeping a live connection open. OpenAI recommends file transcription for completed recordings and documents a 25 MB limit on the file path described in its speech-to-text guide. Treat that cap as specific to the documented route; check the limits for the exact endpoint and model you intend to call.

Google documents short synchronous requests as well as batch recognition for Chirp 3. AssemblyAI says prerecorded files are billed by processed duration. Your implementation still needs to account for upload limits, processing behavior, retries, and any storage or retention requirements that apply to your deployment.

Speaker diarization is not the same as channel separation

Diarization assigns speech segments to speakers; it is not a guarantee that every speaker will be identified correctly. Confirm whether the API supports speaker labels in your selected mode, whether the output includes the timestamps your application needs, and how it behaves when people interrupt or speak at once. If the meeting source provides separate audio channels, test that input separately rather than assuming diarization handles it identically.

OpenAI’s Realtime guide says speaker labeling is not supported in Realtime transcription sessions, while its file guide describes a separate diarization model returning speaker, start, and end metadata. Google’s Chirp 3 documentation places diarization in batch and utterance timestamps in streaming. AssemblyAI’s current diarization FAQ describes streaming speaker diarization for named models using speaker_labels; check the specific model’s current guide before depending on it.

How to run a useful API evaluation

Do not select a transcription API from language counts or model names alone. Google advertises 85+ languages and variants on its product page; AssemblyAI lists 19 languages for its realtime flagship. Those coverage figures do not establish accuracy for a particular locale, accent, code-switching pattern, or domain vocabulary. Verify the exact locale in the current documentation and test the speech you expect to process.

  1. Define the workflow. Specify live or completed audio, acceptable delay, expected session length, and whether the notetaker needs partial results, finalized text, diarization, word or utterance timestamps, or keyword prompting.
  2. Build a representative test set. Use the same real recordings for every provider: include your actual microphone or telephony audio, different speakers and accents, background noise, interruptions, long sessions, code-switching if relevant, and domain-specific terms. OpenAI’s Realtime guide recommends testing representative audio rather than relying only on synthetic samples.
  3. Score the outcomes that matter. Review transcript errors as well as speaker attribution, timestamp usefulness, proper names, technical vocabulary, and how often a person must correct the notes. Weight mistakes by their impact on your product; a transcript that is readable may still misattribute a decision to the wrong speaker.
  4. Measure the complete cost. Record processed audio duration and, for streaming, connection-open duration. Include idle time, retries, channels, and required add-ons in the estimate, then compare it with the latest provider pricing for your region and route.
  5. Verify operational requirements. Before sending real meetings, confirm the applicable retention, residency, compliance, and contractual terms for your account and deployment. The cited feature and pricing pages do not establish that these requirements are equivalent across providers.
  6. Recheck before launch. Confirm the current model name, locale availability, mode-specific features, limits, and price in provider documentation; these can change.

No comparable independent head-to-head accuracy score is established here, and no single provider should be called the most accurate on that basis. The evaluation above is the practical way to identify which option fits your recordings and product requirements.

Turn transcripts into useful meeting notes

Speech recognition is only one part of an AI notetaker. A practical pipeline captures audio, streams it or submits a recording for transcription, preserves transcript segments and their timing or speaker metadata where available, and passes the resulting text to a note-generation step. Keep the transcript and generated summary distinct so users can inspect the source when a summary, action item, or speaker attribution looks wrong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AssemblyAI publishes an example meeting-notetaker workflow that combines streaming speech-to-text, diarization, speaker identification, language detection, and an LLM. It is a reference architecture, not evidence that one vendor is best for every notetaker. For any provider, design for interrupted or disconnected streams, delayed final segments, and a way to correct transcript errors before relying on generated notes.

A desktop notetaker may capture room audio through a built-in or external microphone, but the API documentation does not establish that a USB microphone is necessary or that any particular microphone guarantees better transcription. Evaluate the actual capture setup you expect users to have.
