For a narrated slide deck that you want to export as a video, start with PowerPoint’s built-in Record workflow. It records narration and other presentation elements slide by slide, lets you preview and retake slides, and can export the presentation as a video. Use a screen recorder for a software demo or desktop capture; use Zoom when you need a recording of the live meeting itself.
Which software should you use?
| Your goal | Best starting point | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Make a narrated video of a slide deck | PowerPoint Record | Captures narration, ink gestures, presenter video, and slide timings as part of the presentation; supports preview and retakes. |
| Show a software demo or capture part of your desktop | PowerPoint Screen Recording or a dedicated screen recorder | PowerPoint can capture a selected area or the whole screen and insert the clip into a slide or save it separately. |
| Record a presentation delivered in a live meeting | Zoom computer recording | Records meeting audio and video locally and offers layouts for a shared screen with or without a speaker thumbnail. |
These tools serve different workflows rather than representing a single quality ranking. For most people who already have PowerPoint and need an asynchronous presentation video, its slide-aware recorder is the simplest place to begin.
Record a PowerPoint presentation with narration
PowerPoint’s Record workflow can record a complete presentation or an individual slide. It captures voice, ink gestures, and presenter video; recordings are associated with individual slides, so you can redo one or more slides without recording the entire deck again. Microsoft notes that you can rearrange slides without re-recording them. See Microsoft’s presentation-recording instructions for the applicable version and platform.
- Check your setup and version. Confirm that your installed PowerPoint version and platform support the Record interface described in Microsoft’s instructions. Connect any microphone or webcam you plan to use. External devices are optional; check compatibility with your computer.
- Open the recording workflow. In PowerPoint, use the Record tab or the presentation’s recording option, then choose whether to record the presentation or a selected slide. Button names and availability can differ between releases and platforms.
- Make a short test recording. Record a slide and preview it before proceeding. Confirm that your voice is clear, the correct microphone and camera are selected, and any ink or pointer gestures appear as intended.
- Record the slides. Work through the deck and re-record individual slides if needed. PowerPoint does not record audio or video during slide transitions, so pause speaking while advancing between slides.
- Preview and export. Review the result, correct any slides that need another take, and use the Record window’s export screen if available. Microsoft says the newer Record window defaults to Full HD 1080p MP4; slides without recorded timings display for five seconds by default. The export can include timings, narration, animations, transitions, media, ink, and laser-pointer gestures. Check your installed version before relying on that particular interface or default.
Export the deck as a video
PowerPoint’s separate video-export workflow documents MP4 and WMV output, with resolution choices of Ultra HD (3840 × 2160), Full HD (1920 × 1080), HD (1280 × 720), and Standard (852 × 480). Higher quality creates a larger file. The precise options depend on the PowerPoint version and platform; consult Microsoft’s video-export guide for its applicability details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before sharing the exported video, check that it contains the media and presentation elements you expect. Microsoft warns that some older linked media, QuickTime media under specified conditions, macros, and OLE/ActiveX controls will not be included in a generated video. If your slides depend on these, test an export and review the result before distributing it.
Capture a screen demonstration inside PowerPoint
Use Screen Recording when you need to show an application, website, or other desktop activity rather than record a slide-by-slide talk. PowerPoint can capture a selected screen area or the full screen. Audio and pointer capture are selected by default on the recording dock; after recording, PowerPoint inserts the clip into a slide. You can trim it, or save the recording as a separate file. This is a screen-capture workflow, distinct from recording narration and timing for each slide. See Microsoft’s screen-recording instructions.

Record a presentation as a Zoom meeting
Choose Zoom when the meeting context is part of what you need to preserve—for example, a live presenter speaking over shared slides. Zoom documents local computer recording of meeting audio and video. For a shared presentation, its computer-recording layouts include the shared screen with an active-speaker thumbnail or without thumbnails; a thumbnail gallery layout is also available. Recording options depend on current account, host, and client settings, so check them before the session. See Zoom’s local recording guidance.
Choose settings and equipment for the finished video
- Resolution: Use a resolution suited to the audience and intended display. Higher export resolution means a larger file, so weigh detail against upload and storage needs.
- Timings: Record slide timings if the exported presentation should advance automatically. In the newer Record window described by Microsoft, slides without timings display for five seconds by default; verify behavior in your version.
- Audio and camera: A microphone and webcam are optional. PowerPoint recording can use external audio and camera devices, but no particular model is established as best or guaranteed compatible.
- Transitions: Leave a pause when changing slides during a recording, because PowerPoint does not capture audio or video during transitions.
- Review: Preview a short sample before recording the full deck, then check the exported video for missing media or controls.
Common recording problems and fixes
- The narration or camera is missing: Make a short test first and verify the chosen microphone and camera in the recording setup. Preview the test before continuing.
- Words are cut off when a slide changes: PowerPoint does not record audio or video during transitions. Pause the narration before advancing, then resume after the next slide appears.
- A slide advances too quickly in the exported video: Record timings for slides that should remain on screen for a specific duration. For slides without timings in the newer Record-window export, Microsoft documents a five-second default.
- The exported video is unexpectedly large: Select a lower export resolution if the presentation does not need the higher detail. Microsoft notes that higher quality produces a larger file.
- Some content is absent from the video: Check whether the deck relies on older linked media, specified QuickTime media, macros, or OLE/ActiveX controls, which Microsoft says may not be included in the generated video. Test and review the export before sharing.
- You cannot find the same button or option: PowerPoint interfaces and feature availability vary by version and platform. Check Microsoft’s instructions for applicability to your installation rather than assuming every desktop or mobile version has the same controls.
