OBS Studio is the best starting point for most game streamers who want free, flexible software and do not mind setting up scenes and sources. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if you prefer guided onboarding and built-in widgets. Either way, test your actual game and stream settings before going live: a computer that meets a software’s minimum requirements may still struggle under your workload.
Which game-streaming software should you choose?
| Choose | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Streamers who want a flexible, free starting point with control over scenes, sources, audio filters, and settings. | You may need to configure more yourself. Plugins can extend it, but add-ons are not a substitute for checking compatibility. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Streamers who want a guided setup flow and integrated widgets such as alerts and chat. | Its installer asks you to choose Free or Ultra. The official setup guide reviewed here does not establish a price, so check the current offer rather than relying on an assumed cost. |
These are use-case recommendations, not results of a head-to-head performance test. The OBS Project describes OBS Studio as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” A 2022 peer-reviewed study discusses OBS and software extending OBS, including Streamlabs, as widely used in the streaming videos it analyzed; that qualitative context is not a current feature benchmark or endorsement.
OBS vs. Streamlabs: what actually differs?
Setup and widgets
Streamlabs Desktop’s May 20, 2026 quick-start guide walks through linking accounts, choosing or importing settings, selecting a camera and microphone, creating scenes, adding gameplay capture, adding alert and chat widgets, configuring audio and stream settings, and checking the setup before going live. That guided sequence can be useful if you want onboarding and common widgets in one application.
OBS Studio gives you tools to compose scenes from sources, configure audio and video, and use audio filters. The workflow is flexible, but you should expect to assemble your own scenes and sources. That is an advantage when you want direct control, and a cost in setup time if you would rather be guided.

Flexibility and control
OBS supports sources such as webcams, window captures, and capture cards, and its configurable settings and plugin support let you adapt a production setup. Streamlabs also lets you build scenes and add sources, while its onboarding integrates widgets into the setup flow. Decide based on the amount of configuration you want to own, not on a claim that one app will automatically make your stream look or run better.
Cost
OBS Studio is free and open source. Streamlabs Desktop presents Free and Ultra choices in its setup guide, but the guide reviewed here does not state a price. Confirm what is included in the current plans before choosing; do not assume a paid tier is necessary for your particular setup.
What streaming software should you use for Twitch?
For a Twitch stream, OBS Studio is a sound default if you want free scene and source control; Streamlabs Desktop is an alternative if its guided setup and integrated widgets suit you better. Before installing either, confirm that the current release supports your operating system and intended streaming destination. Requirements and plan details can change.

The practical differences between streaming apps matter less than whether your system can capture the game, encode video, mix audio, and maintain the output settings you choose. Test a representative session with the actual game, scene layout, resolution, frame rate, and encoder you plan to use. If your stream stutters or the game loses performance, lower the workload one setting at a time and test again.
Will your computer handle game streaming?
Software requirements are a compatibility baseline, not a promise of smooth streaming. CPU demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; the game and other running applications also compete for system resources. OBS recommends trying its Auto Configuration Wizard, then checking the result against your own game and target output.
The OBS requirements page reviewed lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X Window System or Wayland. That page may be older than the build you install, so check OBS’s current requirements before relying on those baselines.

Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick-start table lists 8 GB RAM as its minimum and recommends 16 GB or more. A separate Streamlabs system-requirements page recommends 16 GB or more RAM and an SSD of at least 512 GB, and lists CPU and GPU classes; its operating-system baselines differ from the newer quick-start table. Treat each list as specific to its page, not as one universal specification, and check Streamlabs’ current requirements for your version.
Do you need a capture card to stream games?
Usually not for gameplay running on the same PC as your streaming software: software capture can bring PC gameplay into a scene. A capture card is for bringing video from another device into the streaming computer, such as a console, a second computer, or a traditional camera. OBS supports capture cards as a source.

If you need one, look for a USB capture card for streaming that explicitly supports your source device, operating system, connection type, and the resolution and frame rate you intend to capture. Compatibility can differ by card and computer; the Twitch getting-started guide reviewed is from 2020, so its model examples and compatibility notes should not be treated as current purchasing advice. A capture card is not a required purchase for every PC streamer.

Set up a first stream and test it before going live
- Install and open your chosen app. Download the current build from the software publisher and confirm that it supports your operating system. If choosing Streamlabs Desktop, follow its account-linking and setup prompts; the installer presents Free and Ultra choices.
- Create a scene for the stream. Add the sources you need: gameplay, microphone, and—if you want one—camera. Keep the first scene simple so you can identify performance or audio problems before adding overlays and more elements.
- Add the right gameplay source. For gameplay on the streaming PC, select a game or screen capture source appropriate to the app and game. For video from a separate console or computer, connect a compatible capture device and add it as a capture-card source.
- Set the audio sources. Check that the intended microphone and game audio appear as separate, active sources in the mixer. Speak and play a short test; confirm that neither source is missing, muted, or overpowering the other.
- Connect the streaming destination. Link your platform account if the app offers that route, or configure its stream connection using the platform’s current instructions. Treat a stream key as a secret: do not show it on screen or share it, and replace it through the platform if it is exposed.
- Choose a starting frame rate and test it. Streamlabs’ guide gives 30 FPS as general guidance for slower card games and 60 FPS for fast action games. Those are starting points to test, not guaranteed optimal settings; the game, encoder, resolution, and computer all affect what works.
- Check the output and scene under real load. Preview the stream, check microphone and game-audio meters, place the camera where it does not obscure important gameplay, and test alerts or widgets. Run the game and scene you actually plan to stream; reduce settings if the output or game is unstable.
- Go live only after the test looks and sounds right. Confirm the destination and scene, then check the platform’s live preview for video, audio, and any warnings. Keep the stream key private and use the platform’s controls to end the stream when finished.
Common problems and practical fixes
- The game does not appear in the preview: Check that the correct game or screen source is in the active scene, and that the source is capturing the intended application or display. If the video comes from a console or second computer, a capture card may be needed.
- The stream or game stutters: The workload may exceed available headroom. Test with a simpler scene, close unnecessary running applications, or reduce output resolution or frame rate; change one factor at a time so you can identify what helps.
- The microphone or game audio is missing: Verify the selected input device, scene audio sources, mute state, and mixer meters. Make a short test recording or private preview before a public stream.
- Alerts or widgets do not appear: Confirm that the widget is in the active scene and that the relevant account is linked. Streamlabs’ setup guide recommends testing widgets and alerts before going live.
- The app runs but your computer cannot stream smoothly: Meeting a listed OS or GPU baseline does not guarantee adequate performance for a demanding game and scene. Use the app’s configuration guidance, then test the intended game and output settings rather than relying on the minimum specification alone.
- A console feed is blank or incompatible: Check the capture card’s current operating-system support, input format, connection, and source-device settings. Compatibility varies; do not assume an older product example will work with a current computer.
Copyright and platform rules still apply
Streaming software does not grant rights to the game’s music, soundtrack, or other material captured in your broadcast. Check the rights and platform rules for the content you plan to include, and use licensed or otherwise permitted audio where needed. Also review the destination platform’s current live-streaming and content policies; passing a software test does not establish that a stream complies with them.
When StreamNeo is—and is not—the right tool
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live using uploaded videos or a playlist. It is not a game-broadcasting app: it does not capture live gameplay or a camera, and it streams to YouTube only. If your goal is to broadcast a game as you play, use a broadcasting app such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop instead.
For a separate use case—looping uploaded video as a continuous YouTube stream—StreamNeo runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It plays uploads rather than going live from a camera. See StreamNeo for the service details.
