The best Linux snipping tool depends first on your display server and desktop. Choose Flameshot for fast, in-place annotation on X11; Ksnip for the safest choice across X11 and Wayland; Spectacle if you use KDE Plasma and want native integration; and Shutter if you have an X11 editing-heavy workflow. GNOME users should start with the built-in screenshot workflow, then verify that any third-party annotator works correctly through the Wayland portal.
This guide compares capture modes, annotation, shortcuts, display-server compatibility, privacy and practical setup so you can choose without trial-and-error.
Start with X11 or Wayland
Linux screenshot behavior is governed by the display server, not just the distribution. To identify your session, check your desktop’s About or System Information panel, or run echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE in a terminal. The result is normally x11 or wayland.
If your session is X11
All four tools in this guide have their clearest capture paths on X11. Global shortcuts, selecting a region, reading a window and adding annotations generally work as expected. Flameshot and Shutter are especially comfortable here.

If your session is Wayland
Wayland restricts applications from grabbing arbitrary screen pixels. Tools commonly request a capture through the XDG desktop portal, and the compositor decides what is allowed. Flameshot documents GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support as experimental and notes possible portal-permission problems. Shutter’s FAQ likewise says its normal operation depends on a working X server and that Wayland capture goes through the portal. Ksnip’s Flathub listing explicitly names Linux X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland and xdg-desktop-portal Wayland support.
Test your exact desktop session after installation. A tool can capture the entire screen but fail for a window or selection if the portal or compositor does not expose that mode.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best fit | Capture modes documented | Annotation | Display-server position | Desktop integration |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flameshot | X11 users who annotate immediately | Area selection and desktop capture workflow | Arrows, highlights, blur/pixelation, text, freehand, rectangular and circular borders, counters and solid-color boxes | Strong on X11; GNOME and Plasma Wayland support is experimental | Independent, cross-platform application |
| Ksnip | People moving between X11 and Wayland | Custom rectangle, last region, monitor, full screen, focused window and window under cursor | Qt-based markup tools | Explicitly lists X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland and portal support | Independent Qt application |
| Spectacle | KDE Plasma users | Entire desktop, current monitor, active window, window under mouse and rectangular region | Use when KDE’s integrated workflow meets your needs | Use the mode exposed by your Plasma session | Native KDE application with keyboard shortcuts |
| Shutter | X11 users needing a traditional capture-and-edit workflow | Capture behavior depends on X server; Wayland uses the XDG portal | Editing-focused workflow | Most predictable on X11; Wayland modes can be limited by portal behavior | Independent application |
OCR or text extraction is not established as a defining capability for these four choices. If searchable text is your main requirement, verify the current release’s documentation before choosing.
1. Flameshot: best annotation-first tool on X11
Flameshot is the strongest pick when the screenshot itself is only the starting point. After selecting an area, you can draw arrows, highlight a detail, blur or pixelate sensitive text, add labels, sketch freehand, outline rectangles or circles, place incrementing counters and cover an area with a solid-color box.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy choose it
- Markup happens directly on the selected screenshot, without opening a separate editor.
- The tools match common bug-report and support tasks: point at a control, hide a password and number a sequence of steps.
- It is free and open-source software.
Important limitation
Flameshot describes GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support as experimental. If a region selection opens but the image is blank, a shortcut does nothing or a permission prompt loops, check the portal configuration and test another tool. Its feature list also includes an Imgur upload option; privacy-conscious users should leave upload disabled unless they intentionally want an online copy.

- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
2. Ksnip: best cross-session recommendation
Ksnip is the safest general recommendation for a machine that may boot into different desktops or switch between X11 and Wayland. Its Flathub listing explicitly supports Linux X11, Plasma Wayland, GNOME Wayland and xdg-desktop-portal Wayland.
Capture choices
- Custom rectangle: drag the exact area you need.
- Last region: repeat a previous selection for consistent documentation.
- Monitor and full screen: capture a display or the complete desktop.
- Focused window and window under cursor: target an application without manually trimming the image.
Ksnip is Qt-based and provides annotation features after capture. It is a practical compromise when Flameshot’s Wayland behavior is uncertain but you still want markup rather than a bare image.
3. Spectacle: best for KDE Plasma
Spectacle is KDE’s integrated screenshot application. KDE documents capture of the entire desktop, the current monitor, the active window, the window under the mouse and a rectangular region, with keyboard shortcuts for rapid use. KDE lists Spectacle 6.7.4 as released on 2026-08-04.
Why Plasma users should start here
There is no need to add a second utility merely to obtain standard desktop, monitor, window and region captures. Spectacle follows Plasma’s conventions and shortcuts, so it is the natural first choice on a KDE installation.
When to add another tool
Install Ksnip or Flameshot when you need a deeper annotation palette, a workflow that follows you outside Plasma, or behavior that is consistent across multiple desktop environments.

4. Shutter: useful for X11 editing workflows
Shutter remains useful if you prefer a traditional capture-and-edit application and run X11. Its project FAQ says it relies on Linux components including a fully working X server. On Wayland, capture is routed through the XDG portal, so available modes depend on what that portal and compositor provide.
Choose Shutter when
- Your session is X11 and editing after capture is more important than minimal UI.
- You already use Shutter’s established save and edit workflow.
- You can accept testing each required capture mode on Wayland.
Do not select Shutter solely because it is familiar if your primary session is Wayland and you need reliable window or region capture.
GNOME: built-in first, then verify portals
GNOME includes a native screenshot workflow that is the least complicated starting point for full-screen, window or area captures supported by your release. Use it when you only need a clean image and basic shortcuts. Add Ksnip when you need cross-session support and markup, or try Flameshot only after confirming its experimental Wayland behavior is acceptable.
How to choose in under a minute
- Check the session: run
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. - Pick the desktop default: Spectacle for KDE Plasma; GNOME’s native workflow for basic GNOME captures.
- Need annotations immediately? Choose Flameshot on X11; choose Ksnip when Wayland is involved.
- Need a classic editor on X11? Try Shutter.
- Test your exact modes: capture a region, a window and a full screen, then verify shortcuts and saved output.
- Protect sensitive data: review upload settings and keep screenshots local unless you deliberately enable an upload integration.
Installation and first-run checklist
Use your distribution’s package manager, Flathub or the project’s official installation instructions. Package names and versions vary by distribution, so install from a repository you trust rather than copying an unrelated binary.
- Log out and back in if a global shortcut does not register after installation.
- Grant the requested screen-capture permission when the desktop portal asks.
- Test on the monitor containing the target window.
- Save a PNG first; only switch formats after confirming your editor and documentation system accept them.
- Check whether the application starts with the desktop if you rely on a tray shortcut.
Troubleshooting common failures
Nothing happens when you press the shortcut
Another desktop action may own the key combination, or the screenshot process may not be running. Open the app manually, assign a different shortcut in your desktop settings and check whether a background indicator is enabled.

The capture is black or blank on Wayland
Restart the capture, accept the portal prompt and test a full-screen capture. If only one mode fails, the compositor may not expose that mode. Try Ksnip, which explicitly lists portal-based Wayland support, or use the desktop’s native utility.

Focus the target before invoking capture. For Ksnip, distinguish focused-window capture from window-under-cursor capture; moving the pointer over the target before starting can change the result.
Wayland works after login but fails later
Portal sessions can retain stale permissions. End the desktop session completely and sign in again, then retest. Keep the distribution’s portal packages updated.
Annotations expose confidential information
Blur or pixelation can be safer than a translucent highlight, but inspect the exported file at full size. Disable optional upload integrations, including Flameshot’s Imgur option, unless an online copy is intended.

Bottom line
Use Flameshot on X11 when annotation speed matters most. Use Ksnip when you need the broadest documented X11 and Wayland coverage. Use Spectacle on KDE Plasma for native capture modes and shortcuts, and reserve Shutter primarily for X11 editing workflows. On GNOME Wayland, begin with the built-in utility and verify portal behavior before standardizing a third-party tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install more than one Linux screenshot tool?
Yes. Keeping a desktop-integrated utility and a separate annotator is practical, but assign nonconflicting shortcuts so only one tool responds to each key combination.
