What “on-device AI” actually means
An on-device assistant runs at least part of its model on the phone rather than sending every request to a remote data center. The phone may classify a request, summarize a message, recognize speech, or process an image locally. Larger or more demanding operations can still move to the cloud, sometimes within the same conversation.

The hardware stack
Local AI is not determined by a processor name alone. A phone needs a neural-processing unit (NPU) or equivalent accelerator, enough memory to hold the model, a thermal design that can sustain work without excessive throttling, and software that routes supported tasks to the local model. Qualcomm describes Snapdragon as combining “secure local intelligence and cloud-powered capability,” which is a useful description of how modern assistants operate: local processing where practical, cloud computing where the model or task exceeds the handset’s limits.
Why local processing matters
- Responsiveness: a short command can be handled without waiting for a round trip to a server.
- Connectivity resilience: selected functions can continue when coverage or Wi-Fi is unavailable.
- Privacy: data processed locally does not need to leave the phone for that particular operation.
- Battery and heat: sustained local inference can consume power and raise temperature, especially when the model is large or the task uses the camera.
These benefits apply only to supported operations. “On-device” is not a promise that every Gemini or Galaxy AI feature works in airplane mode, nor that a cloud request never occurs.

Google specifically highlights Gemini Live experiences that can use camera or screen context. You can discuss what the camera sees or ask about information currently displayed on the screen, subject to the feature’s connection and availability requirements. The Pixel approach ties Gemini Nano and Gemini to Pixel applications and system features. That can make routine tasks feel coherent when your contacts, messages, photos, and other data already live in Google’s ecosystem. The trade-off is that the experience is optimized around Google services rather than Samsung’s settings and applications.
Offline-oriented capabilities
Google’s Pixel Gemini Nano information says Pixel processing can help when coverage or Wi-Fi is lacking. Google also describes scam detection in calls and messages. Those examples show the practical value of local models: some protective or assistive functions can continue even when a network is unreliable. They do not establish that a full Gemini conversation, every extension, or every multimodal action works offline.
Why the Samsung Galaxy S25 is the strongest alternative

Samsung Mobile Press described the S25 platform as “A first-of-its-kind customized Snapdragon® 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy chipset” designed for greater on-device Galaxy AI processing. The customization is intended to give Samsung more control over how AI features use the phone’s CPU, GPU, and NPU resources.
Samsung’s published generational figures are a 40% NPU improvement, 37% CPU improvement, and 30% GPU improvement. These are Samsung’s own 2025 comparisons, not an independent benchmark, and they do not predict the speed of every assistant task or the battery life you will see in a particular country’s model.
Personal Data Engine
Samsung says, “On Galaxy S25, the Personal Data Engine powers personalized AI features by safely analyzing your data on-device.” The purpose is personalization without automatically sending all of that information to a remote service. What is processed locally still depends on the feature and its permissions, so review the controls shown on your phone rather than treating the phrase as a blanket guarantee.

Gemini actions across apps
The S25 can activate Gemini actions across Samsung, Google, and selected third-party apps. This cross-app emphasis is the main reason to choose Samsung: an assistant can be useful not only for answering a question but also for coordinating information among the apps you already use. “Selected” matters; support is not universal, and an action that works in one app may not be available in another.

A practical privacy checklist
- Grant camera, microphone, screen-sharing, contacts, messages, and file permissions only when the related feature needs them.
- Check whether a request is being handled by a local model or sent to a cloud service.
- Review connected apps before enabling cross-app actions.

Performance, heat, and battery trade-offs
Running an AI model locally uses the NPU and often the CPU, memory, camera, display, or network modem at the same time. Expect the phone to become warmer and the battery to decline faster during demanding sessions than during ordinary messaging.
Samsung’s 40% NPU, 37% CPU, and 30% GPU figures indicate the company’s claimed generational gains, but they are not a guarantee of longer battery life. More capability can also enable more complex tasks. Google’s Tensor G5 announcement similarly establishes the Pixel 10’s local-AI direction rather than a universal battery or speed result.
For frequent local AI use, prioritize adequate storage and memory, a case that does not trap heat, and a charger or power bank for long travel days. A case, USB-C charger, or power bank can support an AI workflow; none adds an NPU or makes an unsupported feature local.

Assistant features are delivered through a combination of phone firmware, Google or Samsung applications, model files, and server-side services. Android warns that Gemini availability varies by device, carrier, and region. The same family name can therefore hide meaningful differences between countries or carrier editions.
Before buying, verify the exact model number, supported languages, carrier certification, and which Gemini or Galaxy AI functions are listed for your market. Check again after setup: an update may add a feature, change its requirements, or move a task between local and cloud processing.

If you spend time on trains, in rural areas, or abroad, test the exact functions you need. The Pixel documentation provides explicit examples of processing that can help without coverage or Wi-Fi, while Android’s requirements make clear that some Gemini features remain online-only.
