The best setup usually combines a monitor light bar for the desk with a separate, diffused source for your face and indirect room light. A light bar can reduce desk shadows and save space, but it is aimed at the work surface; on its own, it may not light your face well for video calls. Choose by lighting direction, monitor fit, camera clearance, and the controls and smart-home support you actually need.
How to set up lighting for video calls and desk work
Think in three layers: task lighting on the desk, light on your face, and ambient light in the room. A monitor light bar primarily handles the first. For calls, add a diffused lamp or adjustable key light positioned to illuminate your face without creating harsh shadows or screen glare. For the room, use indirect light to soften the contrast between a bright monitor and a dark background.
Philips Hue recommends balancing direct task lighting with indirect, diffused light from a mix of desk, floor, and ceiling lights. That is useful guidance for a room setup, but does not mean you need to buy an entire smart-light system: a well-placed lamp can provide the ambient layer.

How to compare a monitor light bar before buying
Check fit and camera clearance first
Confirm that the mount suits your monitor’s shape and dimensions, then check whether the bar or its controls interfere with the webcam. BenQ identifies iScreenBar as an iMac-specific magnetic mount. For Halo 2, BenQ says the front edge is designed to avoid blocking built-in camera lenses. Those claims apply to the named products; verify fit for your own display rather than assuming all bars are compatible.
Compare direction, coverage, and color controls
Consider whether you need light only on the desk, light behind the monitor, or a separate source for your face. Coverage and brightness figures are meaningful only alongside their stated conditions: BenQ lists Halo coverage as 63 cm × 40 cm at 500 lux, while its standard ScreenBar page describes auto-dimming to a recommended 500 lux. BenQ lists iScreenBar’s adjustable range as 2700K–6500K. These are specifications or claims from BenQ, not independent measurements.

If color quality claims matter to you, distinguish a manufacturer’s rating from an independent assessment. For example, BenQ reports Rf>96 for Halo 2; the cited product information does not establish an independent test of that figure.
Decide what “smart” needs to mean for you
Smart can refer to app control, sensors, adjustable color, automation, or integration with a particular ecosystem. Do not assume that a smart feature will work with every monitor, operating system, or smart-home platform. Check the named product’s current compatibility information and make sure its app or automation functions matter to your setup; physical controls may be sufficient if you only need to adjust a light manually.

Practical picks by home-office setup
For a dim, single-monitor desk

For a room that needs adjustable ambient light
Use Philips Hue smart table lamps or compatible room lights as an ambient layer, rather than expecting a desk light bar to illuminate the whole room. Hue’s product selection and regional stock can change, so check the current listing for your location.

Prioritize an adjustable, diffused face or key light and its placement. A monitor bar may still help with the desk, but do not choose it as your only source for flattering or even face illumination unless its position and output actually light your face adequately.
